S7E2: Postmodern Tendencies with Matty Healy

Frontman Matty Healy from The 1975 and Bret Easton Ellis discuss harmless inhabitants mingling with sinister forces in Los Angeles, people deflecting personal responsibility by slinging online accusations of nepotism and the alarming cultural approach to contemporary conflict resolution. Part 1 of 2.

Comments

Didn't know who this guy and his band are and i dig it. The whineratti should pay attention

Erick

they're my favorite band right now, and I've been listening to their music since last fall. they're pretty impressive, I think.

Diane Vierra

What an intelligent and articulate young man, with some incredible insights! Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, and I'm looking forward to listening to his music. I'd never heard of The 1975, so thanks for bringing them to my attention.

Emily Bayer

Just listened to this and I enjoyed it but I take issue with his description of his parents as normal jobbing actors. Were they bollocks! They were relatively famous and by any definition very successful tv actors. They were celebrities. We’re not talk Hugh Grant famous but they certainly weren’t normal jobbing actors.

Guy Lewis

very good conversation. I understand the guest's thoughts about an Oasis reunion. Noel Gallagher basically has a sociopath for a lead singing brother. It tool A LOT out of Noel's system to put up with Liam's BS. True, neither brother is making compelling music on his own. But I'm glad Noel prizes his mental health more than millions of dollars - at least so far.

😭

Healy makes a good point. There does seem to be a new bad guy singled out every week in the news for the culture to feed on. It's tiresome.

Ben

Great interview! I can't wait to listen to the second part.

Louis

Pssstt... you actually do sound like an SJW.

Louis

Loved this episode. Never heard of this band's music, I will now.

Joseph Orlando

It’s amazing and I love Matty!! He is intelligent and talented and has always great stories to tell.

Joy_21

This is the greatest link up since the Avengers assembled… bliss. Two intelligent men having a great conversation about the state of culture today. Thank you, always rated Matty

Kevin O Lanre

I’m the man who punched Matts dad in that play. Ask me anything

Lionel

green day's american idiot or bret easton ellis' american psycho????

slimshadyfan666

The best. This ruled.

Sam Leuenberger

I've got a box of chocolates for you when you're done.

Thomas Edwards

Top notch episode.

Michael Bronspigel

Great episode, though I've gotta disagree with Matt a little bit. Sometimes it's fun being the bad guy even when you're not anonymous.

Isaac Mahaffey

Thank you ! This was excellent !

Kim Steeno

So good 😊

Nikita Smith

I'm looking forward to Part 2 of this discussion, nice job guys!

Diane Vierra

This was brilliant, really enjoyed listening. I'm writing my dissertation at uni on American Psycho (and Fight Club), and The 1975 happen to be my favourite band.

Sarah Taylor

This is a long run

I always learn new things and feel myself deep in thought after listening to Matty Healy’s lyrics, interviews, etc. I think he is a brilliant communicator and will tune in to anything he’s involved with.

ClaireLaw

He's still running.

Lamy

Well, I guess it’s healthy to have a least one troll in the comments…

Todd

I guess you literally don't understand how commenting on the internet works.

R. M.

From all the comments I thought I would hate this interview, but it was a good one.

Ashley

Sorry my opinion isn't to your liking. Have a nice day Mr. Maturity.

R. M.

Coming from an Eminem fan…

Stephanie Wisker

Literally no one asked.

Stephanie Wisker

Thanks for letting everyone know your childlike petty prejudices. A bonus I didn't expect.

chris

My jaw dropped when I saw Matty was the guest. Massive get. Nicely done, BEE team!

Devon Rumpel

You care enough to reply cool kid.

R. M.

No. Challenge yourself. Listen to him then decide. I’m a middle aged man with no social media. I have very little idea who this person is. I could have formed an opinion and not listened but I know it’s better to be open to new things then make a decision. As it was, he raised interesting points. Do I agree with all? No. But it’s interesting to hear them. You’re probably a lovely grown up person and can cope with hearing this, after all - you have paid. Come on, do this thing, it’ll be ok!

James__

this "numbness as a feeling" bullshit was thankfully cleared up in Lunar Park. why keep going?

slimshadyfan666

I'm waiting for your notes

Jorge Espinha

Tried listening to their music which just sounds like a contrived version of M83 (the INXS reference was generous), but I have to say I enjoyed the interview and his thoughts on current culture. A lot of interesting points. That being said, and not to sound like a SJW, but can we have some women on the pod or someone besides millennial dudes who just got cancelled? It’s getting a wee bit repetitive.

Phoenix

I'm skipping this one. All set listening to a guy from a shite band with a terrible name "The 1975" (pretentious bullshit name) make excuses for woke overreach. This band sounds like derivative mediocrity written by someone who listened to the Drive soundtrack too much. I have absolutely zero interest in what this guy has to say, he hasn't created anything unique or interesting. Love this pod but sometimes you just have to skip an episode. No biggie. Bret we much prefer talented or legendary musicians as guests not uninteresting weak-tea woke-lite post-empire derivative millennial musicians. I suggest listening to the bands this guy tries to emulate instead of their derivative trite mediocrity.

R. M.

Stumbled upon The 1975’s “Girls” remixed by the Knocks back in 2014 and have been hooked since. Favorite band since The Killers.

Adam Chin

Bret, any chance Elvis Costello will ever appear on your show?

Neil Anderson

Fyi the stranger is called the outside in Europe!

Chris De Burgha

I thought an odd comment was that “political correctness is good, because it’s better than outright racism.” As if there isn’t a huge amount of room between those two things.

N.M. Janice.

Ideology trumps art today.

Jonathan Davis

Excellent manifestation.

Jonathan Davis

Double Evian on the rocks. With an umbrella.

Jonathan Davis

damn dude

Collin Myers

Thought the whole time this was Bret interviewing Aldous Snow

Collin Myers

Blushing and fanning my face, cant wait to hit the road and listen to this

Tony

We’re waiting with baited breath sis

Slimshadyfan666…

I enjoyed this! I have to admit that I had a negative opinion about Matty Healy before this - formed from what I’ve seen and read in the media - but this completely changed my mind on him. He’s an extremely articulate and intelligent fella and I say good luck to him!

Harry Roth

YES!

Alex Bielovich

i swear i spoke this into existence !!!

Nick Not Nolte

I’m astonished that someone so apparently self and culture aware can buy, in 2023, That ‘progressivism’ aka ‘wokeism’ is coming from a good place. If it’s not clear by now that the current iteration is most definitely NOT and indeed it’s ostensibly ‘noble’ goals are nothing more than a rice paper thin veneer covering truly a truly dark and pathological passive aggression and narcissism I don’t know when it will be. The fact that things do nothing but get worse for the alleged subjects of their world-saving benevolence the more their demented notions actually become policy in both the public and private sectors means nothing to them and is indeed entirely beside the point. It’s a fashion label/accoutrement signifying something that has less than zero (sorry) to do with reality, a reality they know little and care less about. I know Bret understands this but I appreciate his tact in not calling Matty out on his nonsensical cultural takes. Non-confrontational IS quite clearly authentic Bret.

MikeE

what if u dont drink tho

slimshadyfan666

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

the 1975 are a shit band. bret, you have shit taste in music.

slimshadyfan666

damn

MR ADAM SMITH

I enjoyed the pod but think you raise some good points. In total fairness to Bret, Matty was ‘cancelled’ for the trillionth time a couple of weeks ago and it was big news, so fair to ask his thoughts on it. Hopefully part two’s all art.

Bookth

Can't Bret find some old timer from Holywood or the publishing world that has nothing to lose and spills the beans on everyone?

Jorge Espinha

I’ve listened to and been a fan of the BEE podcast since day one, but if I may make a couple of suggestions for future podcasts with musicians, and artists in general (especially younger ones like this guy): please focus on their art and influences as an artist. When Bret mentioned that the 1975, who I am not that familiar with, are like INXS, my ears perked up. I’m a gen xer and loved INXS. But then Bret spends the next 40 minutes talking about Less than Zero (again) and asking a 30-something guest about cancel culture (who cares, and his answer was predictably safe anyway). I really want to know more about the guy’s band and was he influenced by INXS etc. I wish Bret would focus more on the aesthetics in his interviews, and less on ideology! Especially with these younger guests, who are clearly trying to impress Bret (eg compare to the Stephen Malkmus interview - he didn’t give a shit and it was a much better interview for it). Love ya Bret and Adam, but please focus on the art again in the podcasts.

Richard MacManus

I like this guy. Very interesting and articulate. This is exactly why I subscribe to this podcast. At $12 a month, it's the cost of a mediocre glass of wine at a restaurant. Well worth it.

Steve

Was a fine guest - agreed with his opinion on cancel culture/whole culture than most guests. But do we really need to bring this up with every guest? It’s such an over talked about subject on this podcast at this point and Bret always says the same things on it.

OSOS

Malkmus was a lot funnier than this guy !

Keith campbell

God that was dull. Hope part 2 returns to music. Is being compared to InXS an insult or a compliment? Does Manchester and its music scene have any continuity with the New Order/Smiths mythology, or js that a vanished version of northern England? There, I just thought of two better questions.

Keith campbell

And my least fav guests on this pod.

Alexander Quattlander

Yeah thats three musical guests in a row counting the throwback eps.

Alexander Quattlander

This guy's pretty kewl but he should listen to the pod more if he wants to come off like he's such a fan boy.

Alexander Quattlander

Total bore

Moz

I'm not going to listen to this one. It still means 99% of the content is top notch. See you next week.

Jorge Espinha

Another musician!!! Oh Jesus.

Jorge Espinha

What a great conversation. Looking forward to part two.

Kathy Oldenburg

Wow great get - maybe the best band in the world at this point

Alex Lawrence

This was great. Such a pleasure when there's such mutual admiration & engagement.

Vincent Nappi

Let’s go! 😎
