Thinking About the Eagles with Stephen Malkmus

As our new season rapidly approaches, here is a peek inside our vault of sound before we swing its doors open wide next week for Gold and Platinum members to explore the treasures within. In this classic episode from March 17, 2014 Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus joins Bret to share, among many other things, what he thinks of the Eagles.

A bit late, but it was so good to listen to that again. 2014 came flooding back like a motherfucker. I remember not really enjoying this episode back then but I loved it upon listening. Been amazing Pavement hear for the last couple of months too. Anyway, thanks for reposting this.

Also big lol that Malkmus needs a Valium to listen to Mike and the Mechanics or Level 42

So Bret goes on an extended monologue about how he wishes Pavement cared more and were too lackadaisical, with Malkmus in the room who then doesn’t say anything about that ? Lol

Got the sense Malkmus went in mindful of BEE'S intellect, and only relaxed towards the end. If he did 2hrs plus he might riff and go deeper. Still, thank you.

That would be like the first appearance of the Beatles at the Ed Sullivan Theater except with a lot of weeping middle aged guys falling against each other for support as we find out what our bodies think of our pogoing. It's wrong, but somebody would pogo, right? I'd love to see Paul Westerberg show up on BEE this season. This show is the reason I finally bought those Replacements. records. I'd been in elementary school their first go around. Still no excuse, I know.

What if the BEE pod got Don Henley as a guest? Would be a historic moment.

Let’s revamp Bret’s band and keyboard skills. The Greedy Hippies!

Brian Rooney

Hippie capitalism is a thing for sure. Woodstock ‘99 a great example of how the boomers went from free love to loving money.

best description/analysis of eagles i ever heard. so spot on when you actually think about it (and reinforced by the excellent documentary that came out a few years ago). having said that, i still dig them unironically and you cannot lie to me or yourself and say those songs dont get stuck in your head. joe walsh always gets a free pass.

Collin Myers

I remember this being a boring episode back in the day. Upload the fred and carrie one. So cringe.

Nikki Ferrari

I don’t think musicians have a lot to say. With the exception of Nick Cave and Morrissey.

Jorge Espinha

Malkmus is the only writer in the cannon of rock who writes with an awareness of the epistemological consciousness of critical theory - his work is both postmodern (Derrida) and modern (Beckett) and the lyrics are oblique and meandering death of the author poetic - he did this in his twenties and it also didn’t hurt that he was roommates with David Berman 🖤 this is Gen X contribution to the form (okay, maybe Bob Dylan did this before him)

Seneca Garcia

Got excited about the new post and then realized you just posted an old one

Joe Marklin

Great

PETER GREER

I remember listening this in Buenos Aires autumn, on my way to work.

David Cortijo

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I like Bret's rather polite defense of the Eagles. I also like Malkmus saying "why not just listen to Steely Dan." Good to have this "oldie" available.

Steve

Have always wanted to listen to this one! Shall upsize my subscription as a thank you for this and the generosity in releasing past episodes. Really appreciate it. Valentines Day rocks after all!
