S6E37: Destination Pinnacle with John Shanks

Producer/Songwriter John Shanks and Bret Easton Ellis discuss learning to love the journey from Brian Eno, coaxing hit songs from the neglected demos of superstars and the nearly lost art of telling stories through albums as they continue their conversation from last week. Part 2 of 2.

Fantastic conversating.

Why do you pay? There's other things for you to do.

Jorge Espinha

This was a nice episode, but John was like that one uncle who just wouldn’t shut up near the end! Haha

Vlad Boshoer

He savages movies with thought out criticism. I think you missed my point perhaps I said “it’s okay to be critical” but why not do it in a smart way or make points that Bret and Adam could use to improve the show rather than just saying “this is fucking shit”. The ability to shit behind a computer and write comments directly to content makers has made the majority of us lazier and dumber. That was all I was saying. If you disagree that’s fine.

David Willis

I'm a big fan of the show and pay for it willingly each month, but it is not beyond spirited criticism. Listen to how Bret fiercely savages some movies. What's the difference?

Steve

Luckily Bret and Adam do NOT care

Nikki Ferrari

That was fascinating. You should bring him back soon.

Michael Bronspigel

Yes- this was great.

john m

agreed. im not sure what i said above that upset so many people. the bee pod has some hardcore angry listeners/commenters. i thought the episode was interesting!

Collin Myers

People are so rude and disrespectful to Bret and Adam here. They work hard to bring us quality content and it’s okay to be critical but at least have some manners and do it in an intelligent way. The wall that exists between just posting something and what you might say to someone face to face has really caused a collapse in terms of basic niceness. It’s quite sad. Keep up the great work Bret and Adam, the podcast is excellent. Although I wasn’t completely interested in this one as the music stuff isn’t my thing I still found it and enjoyable and insightful listen.

David Willis

Larry Clark was

Nikki Ferrari

ok

Collin Myers

stop crying

Poetical Gore

damn dude. do you pay for this podcast? im so confused. the internet is the worst sometimes.

Collin Myers

tarantino is scum and so is ellis, it's a perfect combo

slimshadyfan666

Hey, guys! Will you please help us get our magazine off the ground??? https://www.healthyopposition.com/ Send us your fiction, your poetry, your art analysis and cultural criticism???

Michael McGrath

just want to know if it is tarantino who is doing shards as a miniseries.

Collin Myers

shardddddssssss is rad

Collin Myers

dude. you are wrong. shards is awesome

Collin Myers

haha dang

Collin Myers

i liked last week but two episodes wasn't necessary. mildly interesting stuff. is this the least Bret ever spoke with a guest?

Brian Borough

I live for this weekly comment even more after quitting drinking.

Pp358

Wonderful episode. Loved listening to the "sausage-making" of a music producer. Thank you for bring John to the podcast!

Dave

Fun episode. Even if I’m not a big fan of some of artists he has worked with, I do enjoy hearing about the process and his thoughts on the craft and production of songwriting.

N.M. Janice.

I like the song, Every Day, he wrote for Stevie Nicks, beautifully sung, of course. Also, a nice conversation about Brian Eno.

Chris Jones

My thoughts exactly.

Adam Dugger

When Tarantino comin back on to talk Cinema Speculation? That book is fn awesome.

Alexander Quattlander

I love that people are here just to be assholes. Like, you're paying to be mad or something?

Jackie Soper

This is so fucking boring. It's like Car Talk or Top Gear. I wouldn't even cross the street to piss on Melissa Ethridge.

Antonio Primavera

The Shards sucks dick, man. It's just fucking terrible. The "memoir" was a sadistic prank and now the novel is a word-for-word adaptation...did you actually think anyone would enjoy this? Probably not, right, because it's "for no one"?

slimshadyfan666

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I miss the old Bret Easton Ellis. Where did you go?

slimshadyfan666

Always enjoy Adam getting involved. ✌️

Patrick

Pretty chill episode

Ashley

I wouldn’t normally share something like this, but Shane Cashman fans doxxed me—so, I’ll share that Hillel Slovak died in my building (way before my time). I often step outside and see little candles (left by foreign people) outside my building. I got love for the show but are we really unpacking Ashlee Simpson songs?! Haha (I remember this guy from that mtv show now—Ashlee Simpson show)

M. Nero Nava

Excellent épisode

PETER GREER

Loved the last two episodes…John was so interesting. It was refreshing to listen to someone so successful lack the pretensions of so many in the industry. I could listen to another 2 hrs of this conversation.

Elizabeth

Joe Walsh... that'd be a great guest. All surviving Eagles. Not the Super Bowl Eagles. Probably never happen just bc ...I imagine Henley being too cranky, Walsh too...Walsh? And Frey is too dead. Maybe we could bribe the Walsh and Henley handlers to take them somewhere on Doheny Drive. That'd be great. "This isn't Anaheim!" EDIT BTW, congrats, Bret. Not to wet your wick, but the reviews for The Shards on Amazon are overwhelmingly positive.

bpvalentine

Sometimes one episode is enough. Bret seemed to totally check out, as did I.

Steve

Pacing and waiting replaced by listening and pacing. This guest rules. So excited for part 2! 👊
