S6E35: Levitating Home with Shane Cashman

Writer/Journalist Shane Cashman and Bret Easton Ellis discuss watching the zeitgeist break itself by the sea, the dwindling list of creative disruptors in America and seeing the future in Don Henley's laundry as they continue their conversation from last week. Part 2 of 2.

S6E35: Levitating Home with Shane Cashman

Comments

Episode was infected with the like virus, almost every other word Shane Cashman said was “like”: made it unlistenable for me.

David Spencer

Fantastical episodes

Sodaheiress

Bunch of offended sissies in the comment section as usual.

Jett

I'd never heard of Nick Fuentes (I'm in the UK). Just looked him up... Jesus-fucking-Christ!

David Lowe

No, he just meandered around lol

Ashley

Did he steal anything?

Keith campbell

always rough to sit thru bio part of interview w some guy i dont know shit about trying to convince u how interesting or diff his upbringing was (and how not rich he actually was)

MeekJaybird

Both of these episodes were great- great interview, great guest. The outrage in these comments is exactly what they were talking about in that interview.

john m

Disagreed with much of what Shane was saying. He also gets certain facts wrong. That said, I'm glad he was on the podcast and I glad Bret spoke with him because it important to interrogate your biases.

Mark Hammond

haha, but rap too!

Brian Borough

Is this a sincere episode?

BJ

dude we get it— marilyn manson lol

Nick Not Nolte

completely agree! it was such a fun experience.

Collin Myers

Oh man… let me tell you. The pain to wait two weeks for the next episode was immense ! He added sound tracks at the beginnings and ends to each episode. Typically sounds of wherever the scene started (ocean waves, wind blowing through palms, the school bell ringing) it really put you in the moment in such a simple way. Having Bret read it made it very personal too. It was a great way to get through the “year of the pandemic “ .

David Eugene

Could you please elaborate on the first part of your response?

Michael Bronspigel

Are you saying he’s “lost in the world” because he doesn’t virtue signal or buy into the MSM narratives like 99% of celebrities?

Klintorious

He is below the level of guest we expect to take the time of BEE.

David Eugene

Yeah, that’s not it. What is “Buzzfeed”?

M. Nero Nava

Interesting past couple episodes and I can tell Shane really touched a nerve with some of the Buzzfeed readers here. It’s almost as if some of you are so well-insulated inside your media/personal bubbles that this podcast is the only time some of your rigid worldviews are challenged.

Klintorious

Can I please have more details on that amazing quote from David Mamet that you read in the beginning? I am having trouble transcribing it. I want to be able to share it with everyone I know.

Michael Bronspigel

Couldn’t make the BK event but did catch Bret at Metrograph for screening of American Gigolo. Never saw in a theater. Fun night. Bret is terrific.

Mary Walker

Great episode. David Duchovny would make a great guest. He’s always promoting something and interesting.

Chris Jiggins

Phew … I regret not driving up from Jersey. But those bridges are $$. Thanks for the report!

Brian Rooney

Saw BEE in Brooklyn last night for Shards event w/ Naomi Fry. Was his usual charming, funny self. Nothing too new was discussed for us loyal podcast listeners other than when asked (by questions submitted in advance, no live questions were fielded) that if he had to choose to have dinner with one of his characters he would select, Victor Ward, because he spent the most time with him and really loves him and that he would probably apologize for all that he put him through. 😂

Patrick

Truly a pleasure to listen to these two talk and share ideas.

Dave

dude i been saying this the last few weeks! i get bee is out on tour for the book but i was so hoping for more of a deep dive convo about the book. the shards was/is awesome. got my first edition. still love the pod just horny for more book talk.

Collin Myers

What I love adore about this podcast is BEE is human … he has an “opinion” it’s refreshing…

PETER GREER

Bret can do whatever the fuck he wants at this point. And sounds like he’s having fun doing the podcast. But it’s clear it’s not the same outlet for his creativity or desire to rap with and learn from the cultural heavy hitter guests it once was. Q&As, interviews with whiny and political minded lightweights and youngsters. I think this pod is sun setting. Damn good run though

Vin Bravo

Yeah - that's what I mean. What other reason could there be! LOL.

LPR

Ha. True.

LPR

Hmmmm - I was pointing out the Jewish factor because Bret often jokes about that being part of his "type". Otherwise that isn't a factor for me, it just so happens that a lot of incredibly interesting and talented guests also have Jewish heritage. Shane to me just wasn't really those things (interesting or talented). The nice thing about Bret is he doesn't state his opinion as fact. He just states his opinion and you can take it or leave it. And he's willing to have discourse with people he likes personally or whose work he finds provoking regardless of politics, which is what is missing in so many other forums. SO my point is, he must like this guy personally (cute, charming, opinionated, etc) because I'm having trouble finding any interesting or provoking ideas from SC's "work".

LPR

Have been enjoying the Shards immensely - hadn’t listened to it in podcast format, haven’t been this obsessed with reading a book in a long time. It’s a shame these are the coinciding podcasts that align with The Shards release. For a host who hates politics, hates forcing politics down people’s throats it’s a shame that’s how these episodes turned out. As someone else mentioned this writer researched ghosts and ufos, why wasn’t this discussed over the dated and obnoxious political conversations?

OSOS

When you go from 'talking movies with Tarantino and Friedkin" to 'talking woke with edgy postcasters'...

Jonathan

This dude doesn't like Netenyahu because of his response to the pandemic?

david saunders

Scottish listener. I’ve jumped over to the Video Archives podcast this week which Bret actually recommended. It’s fun, free and of course has QT and Roger Avary. Bret till I die but can’t be doing with these wingnut guests spouting culture war shite. A return to form is much needed and quick.

Kevan Christie

Bunch of negative nellies. I didn't think he was an amazing guest, but he wasn't horrible like Max Landis.

Nick

What's with all the complaints about Jewish guests? What difference does that make?

E

😭 You said you were looking forward to it, so I felt compelled.

Thumperdinck

He mentioned using my “intellectual toxic waste” quip as a book blurb and on a business card. He’d have to pay me. I also commended him for identifying solid copy (by me)

M. Nero Nava

You guys love the personal attacks. It’s pretty ugly

Tom

Is that true?! I’m honored !

M. Nero Nava

Agree 100%. Also this guest is so lame - he’s insecure enough to clearly be bothered by the negative comments and has taken part of your comment and put it all over his socials.

OSOS

I think Bret Easton Ellis is a very lost and confused man. With all of his other books it's like he knew what the hell he was doing. With The Shards it's like he has no idea what the hell he's doing. I blame it all on him getting lost in the world and feeling the need to write White.

slimshadyfan666

Absolutely. Fair point.

Brian Rooney

"What, don't you think things are great?" BEE quote on the Lili Anolik episode. I spit my coffee onto my dashboard when I heard him say that.

Constantine

Perhaps “desublimation” is a way to think of Kanye in this sort of historical moment. The attack on reified forms and codified attitudes is a version of this, but there is also the specter of “repressive desublimation” in the Marxist sense of Herbert Marcuse. What are the social effects when artistic forms and cultural institutions are desublimated (democratic election manipulated by putting Kanye on the ballot with the help of Kushner for example)? When they are cracked opened by these libidinal energies it’s not always a liberatory event. In the end the overt posturing of Kanye, Trump and Milo are not signs of being advanced disrupters - all three seemed instead prone to anarchic regression and merely a flouting of standards with no plan and the side they align themselves with are the ones actually banning Catcher in the Rye. Apologies 4 the rant - I’ve just been thinking about this . Will probably delete later lol

Seneca Garcia

Always great to hear a different point of view, as long as it's coming from an honest place (which seems to be the case here). Thanks!

FlyingWaffle

That’s fair

Thumperdinck

That's a stretch. I like it, but less and less this season. If he keeps on running damage control for Jews I will likely end my subscription because this is not what I came here for. I am less interested in his flaccid centrism (which is an unbreakable position due to his identity) than I am in his actually insightful takes on the arts. More writers, who do NOT WRITE ABOUT JEWISH IDENTITY AND EXPERIENCES, and fewer lispy Millennial podcasters.

BrienPiechos

The destruction of beauty has always been the primary objective and guiding inspiration. They are ugly and mediocre and cannot stand being subjected to people superior to them, so they use their greater numbers to collectivize and bring Gulliver down.

BrienPiechos

Tom is cherry picking the most absurd examples to make his point and deliberately misrepresenting what "right wing" Americans actually want and believe. Rather than address the fundamental problem of the regime's overreach attempting to use corporate power to obliterate 1A and 2A while forcing unwanted integration with more ham fisted hard power than ever and utterly bankrupting everyone through money printing, overspending, and population replacement, he chooses to paint them in the most unflattering light possible like Jewish space lasers comment. Tom is not a serious person.

BrienPiechos

Every six? Dude, EVERY guest is Jewish and doesn't have any right wing beliefs, they merely disagree with cancel culture (given that the bulk of scalps taken by #metoo were Jewish). Their stance is entirely damage control attempting to reign in a golem that turned on them. This podcast has become "Hey, check out this "good" Jew." The Rogan show plays the same game, over 50% of his guests are Jewish and every political one is Jewish except for the rare occasional black science man. I used to look forward to JRE for the MMA personalities like I did BEE for writers and directors. No more.

BrienPiechos

Completely agree. It seems that these Totalitarian Leftists hate beauty. I tend to refer to them as The Enemies of Beauty. Anything beautiful is "bad." What happened to the notion of Truth and Beauty being connected?

Antonio Primavera

That would great! David Mamet as a guest would be great.

Antonio Primavera

100%. These guests are like Bret interviewing our everyman neighbor. What has this guy done or created in the world of such value that it would be worth listening to him for 3 hours or getting his worldview on?

Vin Bravo

No problem, Tom. What it comes down to is that the regime politicizes EVERYTHING and will continually do so the more it’s incompetency sends us further in to a repulsive clown world. You can run from the culture war, but you can’t hide. So some people who never wanted to fight and are tired of being chased, in the occasion they are caught, they will be really pissed. They will fight to kill. At that point it’s not about politics. It’s about not wanting to be hunted just because you think the party is fake and gay. I think this is how a lot of f GenXers feel. How’s that, you asshat faggot? Haha

Thumperdinck

Or there's the Jewish space lasers discourse, or the drag queen discourse, abortion, or Marjorie Taylor Greene and everything she's come to represent in modern day conservatism (side note Bret, she would likely consider you a "groomer" because you're gay.) I don't want to talk about politics. This podcast used to be an escape from bullshit culture wars for me, but if you want to have the debate, okay let's have the debate. Just don't constantly push this narrative with every guest and then, whenever there is ANY criticism of the right, throw your hands in the air and say "I'M NOT POLITICAL! I'VE NEVER BEEN POLITICAL!" It's an obvious bail-out tactic and seems pretty bad-faith. I love Bret, will always support him and continue to enjoy the podcast and buy all his books. It just frustrates me when he can't see his bias. He's too smart to fall victim this way of thinking. Looking forward to the anonymous pick-me's in my replies with names like "Thumperdinck" delivering personal insults!

Tom

But Adam is. ;)

Patrick

Yes 100% - currently Fox News is flipping out over Xbox having a power saving mode and M&Ms not being attractive. How is that not as equally as ridiculous as the stupid shit on the right.

OSOS

I mean straight male hosts have been doing that sort of thing forever, but I do wonder “is this guy just BEE’s type?”—as an explanation for some of these boring young guys on his show. Man, I’ll never be on the show… and I know exactly how I’d answer the Eagles question. Ha

M. Nero Nava

Bret says on almost every episode that he’s not political and yet we spend every couple of episodes talking about the pandemic scam, the woke patrol and general leftist hysteria. What bothers me is not that Bret is critical of the left, but that he’s not consistent when it comes to assessing the right’s “hysteria.” There is so much ridiculous theatre on both sides but Bret just wants to discuss the left and then whenever the occasional guest points out the right’s bullshit he leans back and says “well I’m not political, I’m not political, I’ve never been political.” Like, you’ve clearly engaged the debate and picked a side, so own it.

Tom

*yawn*

Thumperdinck

Every six episodes or some we get some iteration of the same guest - right-leaning, Jewish, 30s-ish, cute and seemingly Bret’s “type”. They are ALWAYS the least interesting guests. I just lose interest. I had to resist the impulse to fast forward through bits of this second part. (If it weren’t my fav pod, I would have.) I don’t mind when Bret is political but the guest has to be interesting. To give this guy the benefit of the doubt, I listened to three episodes of his podcast, and despite being interesting subject matter, it’s somehow not engaging. Also - can guests like this quit pretending that they don’t know he means the band the Eagles? We all know you’ve listened to the podcast. Lol.

LPR

The only reason you are triggered by Ye is because you are thoroughly submitted to liberalism. There have been numerous historical atrocities committed since the beginning of modernity, but "the holocaust" is the one the west has chosen to propagate. This is because Jews are the token victim of liberalism and nazis are the chosen boogie man of liberalism. People who aren't liberal don't care about the holocaust/nazis any more than any other historical atrocity of modernity. But talking about the holocaust/nazis without reverence or in any non-PC way is basically the most taboo thing you can do in liberal "society". It is also the quickest and easiest way to communicate "fuck you" to the liberal regime. That's why, in the words of Ye, "It's fun to talk about the Jews". It's okay with me if you are liberal. We're all liberal by default if we're born in the west. However, some people don't believe in liberalism and think liberal "society" is bullshit. And talking about these people is fun and interesting. They certainly appear more fun to hang around than liberal do-gooders. The pearl clutching and sanctioning is so pathetic and turns everyone into tools. People need to start misbehaving and stop allowing the liberal regime to manipulate them so much. Even if you are a liberal, giving it that much power will ultimately just enable it to fully embrace its more totalitarian proclivities. We need more insanity. We need more schizo-posting. We need more shock jocks. In reality, reaction is tremendously weak and doesn't stand a chance. Liberalism is the most powerful force that has ever existed in human history. You can afford to let people piss all over it from time to time. And you should. ESPECIALLY in the world of art/aesthetics. Otherwise, you will loose it. If anything, this last decade has shown us that totalitarian liberalism is incapable of producing art that isn't soul crushingly ugly. There's my political schizo-posting for the day. haha And if you don't like it: I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and you father smelt of elderberry!!!!

Thumperdinck

Joseph Mitchell? Never heard of him. Will check him out. Thanks Bret, Adam and Shane.

Philip Huntley

Adam and Brett, never change. BEE is always the podcast I look forward to most. You're putting out great content that you can't find anywhere else. Where else can one find discussion regarding the Ye developments that doesn't immediately devolve into ideology and school marm talk? Keep up the great work! It always a fun and exciting listen, regardless of how I feel about the guest.

Thumperdinck

Love BEE and Adam and podcast. Just not boring yada yada yada guests. I would rather solo Bret and Adam or Q&A then the bottom feeders who are sometimes booked. My two cents is all. I’ll be back next Monday. Can’t wait! 😀

Patrick

M. Nero Nava, you are the most retarded commenter on this sight. Congratulations!

Thumperdinck

Would love to hear Bret deep dive into all things David Mamet…

Moz

And to feign ignorance regarding Nick Fuentes. Please. We’re all chronically online - especially if you work for Tim Pool. Ugh, Bret. Ugh!! Do not Club Random yourself into irrelevance.

Brian Rooney

Bret loves disruptors. He’s also not reading your comments, people!

Nikki Ferrari

For me, Bret will always get a free pass. Endless free passes for the writer of Rules of Attraction, Lunar Park, etc. Bret is the best. However! The guest cannot claim to be centrist, cannot claim to be neither left or right, and then attend a Turning Point event!!! Get real. Gas bag.

Brian Rooney

Less ideology on the pod please. Give us more esthetics.

Frenk van Harreveld

When the guest is both sides-ing the impatience of Bret is palatable. He doesn’t want to spend any time on whatever is wrong on the right, he exclusively wants to revel in talking about hysteria on the left. I recall Bret on numerous occasions calling himself a left-leaning libertarian. Those days seem long gone.

Frenk van Harreveld

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I give some slack to artists. Salvador Dali was insane. However what's the point of giving attention to Milo or Fuentes? I thought at the beginning, Milo was fun but there isn't much substance there, he likes to schock. And that's about it. There's no depth in Fuentes, is just a hateful little misogynistic virgin. There are people that fall in the radar of the regressive left that are deeply uninteresting. I say that as a Conservative. I don't want any one them cancelled or stopped to give speeches in Universities but they have nothing to offer. And because I don't like rap that much, Kayne or ye or what the hell he wants to be called these days has nothing to offer to me. Please, bring more writers and artists but not guys that are just contrarians.

Jorge Espinha

One time I worked as an “art guard” at a party Micheal Ovitz had at his insane home in Beverly Hills. We had to make sure no party goers touched any works of art that inhabit the few gallery like spaces in his massive home. Anyway, at some point in the night I turned around and Kanye West was there, about five feet away from me. We made eye contact and he looked me up and down, stopping briefly at my thighs before he continued on his way. My brush with fame took place in 2013 if I recall correctly. I used to be really excited to tell that story. I really have no feelings about Kanye West, he’s much shorter in real life than I thought he would be. I think the destroying artist take Bret likes to favor has some merit. But to what end? I find anyone that needs that much attention somewhat distasteful. I guess that’s where we’re at though. Screaming obscenities and and racial slurs into the void.

Ashley

Recently I said my nephew was reading American Psycho. It turns out it's for school. Highschool. In Portugal public Schools are controlled centrally by the ministry of Education, I believe the schools have some wiggle room but the book is definitely authorised by the "system". So, American Psycho is part of the syllabus of Portuguese schools, it's optional but kids can make that choice.

Jorge Espinha

You’re the one “triggered”. Patrick made an observation, and a critique and somehow it’s some major slight. We all pay for the show, clearly we all enjoy it. So, we have preferences. I’ve enjoyed guests who I disagreed with, they were compelling people, had a point of view. But, often these sort of low bro shock dudes, and guys who pop wood to American Psycho are too puppy doggy with BEE, and the discussions never really achieve anything new. I’m here for every show. Again, you don’t have to act like Patrick is maligning BEE and Adam by critiquing a guest.

M. Nero Nava

well, maybe Bret will run his guest list past you so you don't get triggered anymore.

Poetical Gore

If you believe they put a man on the moon.... what does Bret think of R.E.M.?

Steve

I did enjoy the Kayne escapade and analysis but in general I think these type of episodes are the very embodiment of ideology over aesthetics (like MNN pointed out above). Shallow, only moderately successful, similar thinking, sycophantic guests make for very predictable and boring yup yup yup yup yup yup conversations. Aaand whenever anyone who obviously regularly listens to the podcast but pretends to be confused about the Eagles question (football team or the band, duh?!) it is obviously a phony response. I am hopeful tho that we get back to actual meaningful conversations with true artists and real movers and shakers on the podcast one day. In a bit of a slump here…🤷‍♀️

Patrick

This guy thinks Marilyn Manson and Andre 3000 are similar… he also thinks the George Floyd protests/riots are the same as the Jan 6th riots. His ignorance, skewed view on the world, and sheltered scope—is at the least—consistent. It’s always a bummer when this show (the show that touted “ideology vs aesthetics”) spotlight guests with political agendas… who are also unlistenable and unentertaining. Man, can we get to talking cinema, books, and culture? This guest is of this internet era of “shock jock” that think discussing Jews, confederate flags, and both sides-ing everything is subversive. This “cracking the code” approach to art and culture is intellectual toxic waste.

M. Nero Nava

Just received my first addition of The Shards……
