S6E32: Sitting Through the End Credits

Bret Easton Ellis bids farewell to 2022 as he talks about Mike White operating at the height of his powers, the abject misery of Whale watching and hanging out in the sushi tent as he replies to questions from Platinum listeners on the air. Wishing you all a safe and happy 2023 as the simulacrum persists.

Great question from Mas

Sodaheiress

Adam, you need to read Naomi Wolf’s book The Pfizer papers, it comes out Tuesday.

Sodaheiress

Exactly. Abraham has a similarity to Jack Nicholson in that.

Sodaheiress

I'm straight and I thought the two hookers were adorable, especially Simona Tabasco. The blonde wife, Meghann Fehy was gorgeous.

Mark Schatzberg

Star 80 is really brilliant and ahead of its time, I think. Eric Roberts had some really amazing early roles in his career, and this was one of them (others being Pope of Greenwich Village and Runaway Train). It would have been nice to hear Sam Wasson talk about Star 80 when he was on, since he wrote that Bob Fosse biography. Cheers to Bret for mentioning the Avery-Tarantino podcast on Star 80. Curious to check it out.

I completely agree about White Lotus. I ended up watching S2 before S1 so I was kind of let down when I saw S1 that it wasn't as focused. But yeah, White Lotus is right up there with Succession for me. I cannot wait for S3 and love that they are ambitious enough to go to the Middle East instead of staying in that rich white american-european vibe.

Harold B

The Whale sounds horrible.

Ben

Nikki, let us know how it goes. Maybe Will Smith w come by w a magic trick called Keep My Wife's Name Out Yo' Damn Mouth.

bpvalentine

Just bought my tickets to see bret speak in brooklyn in two weeks. And with naomi fry. Im dying.

Nikki Ferrari

Yes thank you!!!

Nikki Ferrari

Bret please watch and review the monstrosity that is Cocaine Cowboys.

R. M.

David Ehrlich would be good, if only to hear Bret school him. One of the most smug ideologue movie critics out there.

Thomas Matich

I was curious for Adam to continue what he was saying about Pfizer, et al. I live in Mexico and avoid most US stuff. I really miss the socio-political rants and whatnot. I really enjoyed that period. It's not a "voice" (as the kids say) that I hear much and it made me feel less alone and more sane. Most of what I hear coming from the US is utter insanity. For example, have you seen this nonsense from the Stanford Language Police: https://s.wsj.net/public/resources/documents/stanfordlanguage.pdf ? It would be humorous if it were a joke. Book recommendation: I am almost done reading Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, and it is one of the best things I've ever read. So good! Thanks Bret and Adam!

Antonio Primavera

Why?

Antonio Primavera

Bret, can you chat about Avatar The Way of Water?

mr_potato

Really curious to hear Bret’s take on Babylon

Thomas Zimmerman

As always this is such a joy to listen to. I so appreciate Bret’s and platinum posse’s recommendations and taste. I just finished watching Star 80 and will check out that podcast episode.

Kerry

It’d be great if Ehrlich was a guest.

Brian Rooney

Remembering when my Dad took me to see "important movies" like the rerelease of Lawrence of Arabia, I took my son to see Tár. Not a movie for seven year olds. We went to the bathroom three times. Really appreciate Bret revisiting a very challenging movie. Also, I would love to hear film critics interviewed there. David Ehrlich is a current favorite. If criticism expected more from movies and sometimes championed "difficult" films, maybe we'd get better movies?

T Frick

I’m starting to believe this running comment is an underrated piece of performance art.

Adam, PLEASE book F. Murray Abraham this year. That guy hasn’t given a fuck in decades

Normaling

Just want to let Bret and Adam know how much I look forward to the podcast’s release each week. Being a fellow Gen-x’er, the monologues and conversations on film, literature, and the culture suit my tastes. I’m so glad that you find creating the podcast fulfilling because I certainly value BEE as touchstone to the culture.

Dave

Bret took the words out of my mouth with his monologue. The present era just feels so…empty. I don’t know if it’s getting older and the people I know irl don’t get my references anymore, or that I can’t relate to what’s currently ‘cool’. Or maybe it’s all the people STILL wearing masks and constantly getting upset about politics. Losing friends over politics! Or that society has lost their sense of humor. It’s bonkers that this is reality now. On a high note, agree the new Beach House album is great. I’m a big fan, just saw them live here in Ventura in Dec, amazing show.

Phoenix

Bret’s pre-review of The Whale is the best laugh i had all day

sean in hawaii

Bret’s devotion to the compact disc truly warms my heart.

Paul

Thanks for heads up on that new OM book! Just ordered. Get her back on the podcast! 📚

Patrick

I’m guessing maybe the director could have something to do with the up coming Shards mini-series Bret was talking about… Could be completely wrong though.

Iain

Same!

Megan Abbott

Favourite read of 2022: Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh (thank you for the introduction) Favourite series: The White Lotus Season ONE.

Alex Bielovich

I need to know too

Alex Bielovich

“I am an island.”

Ashley

Brett and Adam, love you guys! Keep it up! Bret is going to have such a horrible time watching The Whale. To be fair, it does suck ass. I like Aronofsky though. Requiem for a Dream and Mother! I really loved.

Thumperdinck

Brett talking about the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills made my week. Thank you to the Platinum posse for such good questions this episode.

Audrey Rouget

Happy new year Bret.

Tommy Stronach

I’m so stoked to find out about the “Bones and All” connection he’s talking about 🤩

Austin Mckee

Shut the fuck up about your run

Stephen

Great episode as always. Happy new year, Bret and Adam!

Iain

Excellent episode and a really fun listen. I have the same pessimism and tiredness about everything political and cultural these days and as I turn 40 this month I give even less of a fuck these days. Podcasts like this keep me ploughing on through the days. So, I just want to say thank you Bret and Adam and Happy New Year (whatever the fuck that means) to you both and Todd.

David Willis

My favourite podcast guest of the year was Friedkin. Not many of these guys left but would be cool to have more podcasts with 70’s directors/ stars. Maybe another Schrader episode if you guys still speak?

Alistair Dean

^ 100% Straight man here. Sabrina Impacciatore “Valentina” Aubrey Plaza, and the actress who plays “Mia” are also smokin

Frank Formica

You are not alone.

Jorge Espinha

Why? Why doesn't he say more later?

Jorge Espinha

Alright so. I subscribe to Tim Heidecker, Best Show, Jokermen, Film Junk, and Bret. Bret is consistently the best. I mean, the others are very important and saved my life just as much as Bret. But at the end of the day, it’s this podcast. Hope it continues. Peace everybody.

Brian Rooney

Special praise to Adam for teasing out that *wonderful* speech from Bret about how he responds to the people who make us all miserable. He perfectly explained his stance, which is rock solid, and he might not have otherwise. It’s an unexpected treat to hear the Q&A chemistry improving.

Bookth

Best Q&A episode ever. Bret and Adam were so on it was as good as a monologue. Thanks for being part of our year.

Harrison Bergeron

Beelike < term for describing something reminiscent of Bret

Jon A.

Thanks guys!

grainpulp

At least now I understand why you never say more later (after your run)!

E

yes!!! more shards, please!!!!

Collin Myers

Dear Bret, Next week I hope to see The Shards: A Journey: From Podcast to Novel.

slimshadyfan666

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

As a straight man I can confirm that I found the brunet Italian Prostitute extremely hot, and the red haired married with the duchebag too.

Jorge Espinha

Thank you to whoever asked about the housewives.

Pp358

The pod is great, guys. I'm happy to support the show and, as I've recently said on these boards, albeit with my lips ceremoniously wet and puckered (at least according to, I don't know, some unhappy cus responding to my BEE enthusiasm), Bret and Adam have offered a reason where Mondays don't make me feel shitty to anticipate. Not even the Fonz could do that.

bpvalentine

Fabulous…..

PETER GREER

So glad you do the podcast, it brings us all a lot of joy

Patrick M

Happy new years, fun episode. Thanks for continuing to do it

M. Nero Nava

Yay! I pace around my apartment and wait for this to post every Monday. Best. Can’t wait! 😀
