S6E29: Chronicling a Lost Continent with Walter Kirn

Writer Walter Kirn and Bret Easton Ellis discuss witnessing the true meaning of Christmas come alive on the December dance floors of elite holiday parties, the contemporary need for a daring rascal to crack open cultural illusions and authors of yesteryear following orders from Dr. Freud.

Actually should’ve listened to the end. Not Andaz. But i remember the Whisky Bar in West Hollywood and the hotel. Just can’t remember the hotel name.

Jack Wheatley

Sounds like they’re talking about the Andaz which used to be the infamous Riot (Hyatt) House on Sunset back in the day.

Jack Wheatley

There were really impressive moments by Kirn — Trump (who uses a gold toilet and lied about donating his presidential salary to charity) described as the defender of the underclass, Taibbi the “muckraker” anti capitalist who’s publishing on Twitter material provided to him by the world’s richest man who also owns Twitter. They lost me at the Kanye thing, defending the indefensible stops being funny when the indefensible guy is on record as loving Hitler.

Matteo Persivale

My brother has been living in my house a little while. The TV is ALWAYS on if he's not off taking a nap. He's really into the FOX holy trinity. The Five. Tucker. Greg Gutfeld. I'll give one thing to GG. He has great taste in music. He's also a crime against funny. I'm pretty sure he does a lot of coke, too. He's nearly vibrating in his seat half the time. Then some day's he'll be hunched over the table on the Five and glowering at everyone. Like, gee, did you miss your B-12 shot today? I really don't get what people, my brother especially, what do they see in him? It can't be just about his politics, can it? Honestly, I don't care about his politics. Cable news is full of ridiculous TV personalities. My sister is a loud and proud lefty who says so and so on CNN is bad, too, yes, GG makes her look like ______ (enter your favorite classic news reader who remained publicly neutral on politics.). That's silly, of course. CNN and other went years right up until recently hardly covering any news that wasn't Trump oriented. I'm assuming you will disagree with me and that's fine with me. Changing anyone's mind isn't what I set out to do. We can at least agree that conservatives aren't funny. And that we need to get the number of GG's dealer.

bpvalentine

I agree. I never cared for Greg Gutfeld. However, I recently learned that one of my favorite comedians, Nick Di Paolo, occasionally submits jokes to him to read on the air. Nick has that gruff, acerbic, east coast disposition that reminds me of the working class Italian-American culture I grew up with in New York. His delivery is like a guy busting balls in a bar with his buddies after work. Gutfeld comes off like the kid in class who tries to cut you down with a snarky remark after you just tried making a point to the teacher. Delivery, style, and personality are key.

Billy Schafer

“I have insider information that I can’t share” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Max Armstrong

Great episode overall. But have to disagree on Gutfeld. He is the most mean spirited guy in late night by far. Not that any of them are funny, but his “jokes” are the least funniest crap ever, with some of the worst delivery.

Thomas Matich

Great pod, Bret. Keep having Walter on.

Tommy Stronach

Love Walter.

grainpulp

What hotel do you think he was staying at?

Matt Wall

Walter Kern is a breath of fresh air! I'm glad to see that not everyone in the US is fucking insane.

Antonio Primavera

Love Walter Kern! He should be a reg.

Thumperdinck

Kirn is a wonderful guest. Very insightful.

Ben

Kirn sounds like he hasn't cleared his throat in a decade.

Stephen

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

Great interview. I hope there’s a part 2. And as a side note, would love Bret’s commentary on season 2 of White Lotus.

Phoenix

Glad to see this on the insta as well.

Pp358

Walter Kirn is always a great guest.

Peter Guzzo

Loved this episode and how these two so eloquently capture the state of the culture and where we’re at as a nation.

Dave

Belongs on Bill Maher’s bastard of a podcast, cLuB rAnDoM. 🎉

Brian Rooney

I listened to this episode 3 times. What are people going on about? It was great. I think it hits differently when you live in Los Angeles.

Ashley

This was the least interesting and most unlikable guest since the last time he was on. I enjoy lambasting woke ideological groupthink as much as anyone, but Kirn is going full conspiracy theorist nut job here. The liberal elites are creating a web by marrying each other and going to each others therapists? Pal, that’s what elites have been doing since the dawn of time regardless of ideology 😆 The discussion about Kanye was just incredible, trying to turn an obvious case of mental illness into some kind of piece of art. Oh and where are these Twitter files you speak of? 🤡

Frenk van Harreveld

I really hated this douchebag.

slimshadyfan666

Excellent conversation. “Approved discourse” has sucked the life out of Los Angeles. Endless hysteria. You have to have Bari on next!

Nick B

I dunno, I dunno … This has already aged poorly with the recent “Twitter Files”.

Brian Rooney

LOVE this episode

Jen Gray

I liked Walter Kirn’s previous appearance but what on earth are these guys on about, equivocating for Kanye ! A mentally ill celebrity spouting hateful gibberish

Keith campbell

Awesome, urgent, interesting podcast. Love it. Ignore lame comments from people who'd rather you review the latest Ryan Murphy dreck and ignore the big subjects. Thanks for letting us sit in on this fascinating REAL talk.

Harrison Bergeron

You ain’t lying. I have as well. He‘s intelligent and at the perfect age to balance the argument, maybe.

George Quartz

Played a show with Pink before. He’s just a rich tweaker. But I mostly agree with you

M. Nero Nava

He had some great takes, but then said ‘…and the thing I hate about young people’. …Because they’re young and he isn’t. Game over, man.

George Quartz

George Quartz

thats a long ass run

Poetical Gore

hot talk. but i’ll never understand how people this old are somewhat surprised politicians are gonna do politics and try to protect their best interest. this wasn’t invented in 2016, this has always been but legit never shown like it had in the last decade. also, no one cares.

Nick Not Nolte

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Kirn is genuinely grand and funny in small doses, but the shitting of the bed is always inevitable. Usually he makes me sleepy with his Foster Wallace fellating and his attempts to chop down Franzen but now he's added internet troll to his resume.

Nathan Duin

WK is a great guest. Loved how this conversation had such an effortless back and forth. It almost had the casual feel of one of your monologues - just with another person in the mix 🙌🏼

Devils 1973

How are they misinformed and how do you know that you're not over informed about a number of things that aren't true?

Travis Films

My chief criticism about Millennial’s bating is that they didn’t sprinted fully formed from a spring. The majority of millennials had Gen X parents. We screwed them! It’s on us!

Jorge Espinha

Yeah, you always get butt hurt when I make fun of incels, right wingers, and mouth breathers. Snowflakes, precious snowflakes

M. Nero Nava

Why don't you enlighten us about all this misinformation here?

bpvalentine

Unfortunately, I’ve come to expect and accept it here. It’s very embarrassing and cringe-worthy how out of it and bubble-like their takes are on the real world. Anyhoo, the beginning and the end were strong despite the thirty-minute snooze fest in the middle. I mostly just laughed it off and felt sorry for them. Imagine being so happily misinformed. Scary! But, who cares?! Cheers to the podcast, this episode, and his guest!🥂😝❤️

Patrick

I really enjoyed the chat. Mr Kirn is a pleasure to hear.

Jorge Espinha

Really enjoyed the talk of old LA and NY. The show shit the bed when we started talking about the greatness of the Steve Gutfeld show-(a political show for mouth breathers and incels). Then we got into some pseudo Qanon stuff… we’ll always have last week, I guess

M. Nero Nava

Fantastic episode, thanks ….

PETER GREER

I finally got around to watching Up In The Air tonite - what a wonderful movie 🛫💻🌐☕️🥃

Seneca Garcia

Fantastic episode. At times these two curmudgeons sound like The Sunshine Boys. Then they sound like the two most articulate and free-thinking people left in America. A+

Steve

Love a Walter Kirn conversation (my favorite guest of the pod)

Elizabeth
