S6E24: Typical Icarus with Max Landis

Screenwriter Max Landis and Bret Easton Ellis continue their conversation from last week and discuss friendly collaboration creating Chronicle, watching the Color Society fracture as it fades to black and craving a weirder Batman. Part 2 of 2.

Great interview!

Anders Ølholm

Oh I have to say despite my last tongue in cheek comment, I admire Max , I beleive he's honest and brave.

Michael Madonna

Max seems to be channeling Tom Hulce performance as Mozart

Michael Madonna

Excellent

AY

Not the most engaging guest.

paul dakota

It was hard to listen to Max. He’s too much.

Andrew McGovern

get him back on the show again I need more Max Videos/podcasts

David North

Really enjoyed this interview. I have to admit I find it hard to believe someone can admit to being a bad boyfriend, a bad friend and a disappointing person in general, except in business of course, were there a completely standup guy. Just a little hard to believe, I don’t know. I am against cancel culture and I’m not taking any particular side but I’m a little sick of Bret saying he doesn’t understand certain things about rape or assault accusations, it would really just take a couple seconds of a Google search to learn a little bit more about the way people process rape and assault and the fact that our brains protect us from harm and we convince ourselves that bad things didn’t happen and it takes a really long time for a lot of people to understand what happened to them, Bret really has no excuse to say he doesn’t understand this. Fucking look it up. It’s a real thing. It’s fucking psychological. Not that hard to figure out if you care to get perspective on a full story. This is just a general comment, I’m not talking about the people who accused Max. I don’t even know who they are.

Nikki Ferrari

You WILL be able to create how YOU WANT again. You WILL. Fuck these PAID FOR bullies.

Sarah Murray

I couldn't stand Max. He's like an even more obnoxious version of his dad. Is it strange why Hollywood is blacklisting him while they turn a blind eye to other pedos and molesters. I didn't get the sense he feels bad but more that he's sad that he's broke and not a top screenwriter. Hopefully, I'm wrong and he's on a better path.

Pablo Pappano

This is a very good interview. I like Max.

john m

Did anyone in NYC go to QT reading at Town Hall this week. The discussion between Bret and Max about Millienial/Gen Z struck a cord with that crazy young girl in the audience.

Mary Walker

I skipped thru the beginning but Max won me over. I wish him well.

Mary Walker

My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming. My shaming.

BrienPiechos

Exhausting.

Brian Kenna

This was a fascinating interview. I found Max so interesting. I only vaguely knew of his “me too”-ing moment but wow, I really felt for him. He seems to understand what he did wrong and I really hope he is able to create once again.

Tara Jean Sulljvan

Yeah this is three really poor episodes in a row. Doesnt cost much to be a subcriber but after 4 years as a subscriber any more of these artless children guests and might be time to move on. I wouldnt pay a nickel to listen to them. Can we go back to Bret’s monologues, deep dives (I.e Tom Cruise, Michael Cimino, etc) and guests worthy of Bret’s intellect, talent, and our time and money?

Vin Bravo

After three weeks of millennial strang-o’s, I’d love an old school guest on the pod. Any chance you could book James Ellroy? Bret mentioned his affection for the original LA Quartet a month ago. Author, Los Angeleno icon, obstinate, and obscene. A perfect fit for the pod.

Adam Chin

All My Friends Hate Me is a solid recommendation—real gas-light thriller.

Morgan Hobbs

Bret. God bless yah. Your podcast is a trip.

Brian Rooney

Regardless of what you think about Max, almost 99.9% of all public accusations (where the accuser does not go to the police and sometimes even when they do) are essentially hyperbole; a wildly dramatised version of actual events. Let this be a warning to all men to avoid unstable women.

Christopher Ward

buh-bye

bpvalentine

You seem like the shitty cunt here

MATT TRIANO

BTW, why didn't Bret simply ask Max if he settled with any of these women?

Jesse Dykstra

What's up with the weird cut after Max proclaims, "I have hooked up with a lot of men?" Clearly, we have an awkward edit here, the subject matter making it even more awkward, and the listener has to assume that whatever Max subsequently said was later erased per Max's request.

Jesse Dykstra

I personally think Max is a misunderstood genius. I’m a fan of his and am now a fan of yours for having the bravery to have him on. Thank you for this.

Luke Longmire

…and a wave of relief washed over her.

Pp358

That was literally insane, he sounds like a BEE character, I don’t believe he doesn’t like blow, he sounds like he’s geeked up at 7am telling his life story just as he rehearsed a million times to himself. I heard him orgasm at least 8 times. Fascinating but insanely cringe and sad as hell. Great 2 parter.

Timothy Bedinghaus

I’m glad you had max on. I subscribed just got these episodes. I hope you have him back

Kelso 2134

Thank you for hosting Max! I thoroughly enjoyed this!

C Hilton

I didn’t say I liked KS (though I did like Clerks) I said this guy was worst.

Jorge Espinha

Why are you continuing to subject your listeners to this mind-numbing jackass. I’m out 😂

nwp

Ew!

Thumperdinck

Did you date Max Landis?

Ashley

Hang in there Max Landis. Clearly a very bright guy.

Nicholas Vinocur

As an NJ local who lives near Smith’s hometown, I’m a View Askew apologist. However, Smith’s perspective on film and entertainment, especially superhero movies, is tough to defend … Definitely different strokes.

Brian Rooney

Max is entertaining to listen to

Nick Broketah

Joined as a Max fan, lo and behold he is just as polarizing here as everywhere.

Al

A curmudgeonly bastard perhaps?

Thumperdinck

If hes a cunt what does that make you?

Tom Baxter

“i have made out w/ a lot of men—“ followed by the most obvious edit cut ever 🤣 i’m guessing what he said after that was too juicy for the pod lol

Nick Not Nolte

I honestly didn't know john landis had a son, let alone one in the business that got cancelled during the #metoo years. That being said, i appreciated his frantic excitement in these episodes. I'd much rather listen to a guest like this over someone like Jerry Stahl.

Brian Borough

Agreed. Kevin Smith is the most annoying talking head in the film industry. Never seen his films, but their promotion media is obnoxious AF.

Thumperdinck

Max Landis will never create anything of non-monetary value, but I must admit it is somewhat entertaining to hear a lying narcissist whine about how mistreated/misunderstood he always is. Made me laugh several times. Edit: I’m anti cancel culture. I think there were no victims in this situation. Anyone who could stand to date Max Landis for one day is a troubled person. He has a habit of creating enemies who attack him viciously. That’s a problem he created and he has to live with it. I cannot bring myself to give a shit. Anyone can see through his bullshit. The worst part about him is that he is associated with nerd culture in the film industry. The nerd culture film people can all burn in hell. Chronicle sucks. Josh Trank sucks. Everyone associated with the Max Landis sphere sucks. I wish them only failure in the film industry. Maybe next time I’ll tell you how I REALLY feel. Edit 2: and the only thing I have against John Landis is that he raised a cunt for a son.

Thumperdinck

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Kevin Smith was the most unlistenable guest of all time, movie talk or no movie talk. Also, Rose Macgowan was great... So different strokes, I guess.

M. Nero Nava

I lasted to the 35th minute. I wished they talked about the scripts, how hard is to write one, the notes from studio executives, how different the finished product is from the first draft. That would be interesting. Also interesting would be a conversation of favorite writers, scriptwriters and directors. Instead we got a People Magazine’s interview. Well….this is the first time if I count out the Rose Mad-Gowan episode that I don’t finish an episode. Better guests will come. At least Kevin Smith talked about movies!

Jorge Espinha

Thank you. It was good to hear another side to a story. One may even warm to him. He actually comes across a bit like QT. Plus did he manage to keep the eloquent Mr Ellis to a world record low word count?

Thomas Edwards

Loved it

Jerome Busca

Here's the thing. I know this sounds dopey. But I don't know a lot of people who REALLY like movies. I know plenty who go to movies or pass out on the couch in front of a movie on TV. They're not locked in. They don't wonder about the people who made it. I don't know many, or maybe ANY people who really live for movies and who wants to be creative to make things, etc. It's really hard for me to dislike anyone who loves movies. Not to say Max gets a free pass on everything. He does kinda find your last nerve once in a while, haha. But good lord. The hate he generates. It's fascinating.

bpvalentine

The guest is annoying. It happens, it's okay.

Steve

Def enjoying this interview more and feel bad about some mean things I said last go around. He’s a human too. Maybe a compete and total cunt but who wasn’t in their twenties?! Anyhoo…Intelligent, interesting answers to BEE’s tough questions regardless of what he’s talking about I respect his POV and articulation as it is quite unique. Wish him the best. Thanks, B. Great interview. ✌️

Patrick
