S6E23: Deconstructing the Blueprint with Max Landis

Comments

Nooses?!!

Louis Norton

Brett, love your stuff but Max Landis is a complete & utter psychopath. If you ever want to see stuff he sent to me & the defamatory website he started, as well as the nooses he put above my door, feel free ;)

Thesy Surface

Yes. I saw it twice in a local movie theater when it was released. Haven’t seen it since. Maybe it’s time…

J Hay

I was surprised how relatable Max was. Everyone definitely knew someone like him at some point.

Vlad Boshoer

This is neither here nor there, but I met him once at an event and he made fun of me for eating a carb. I didn't give a shit of course, but I will say I've never (in my almost fifty years of encountering other human beings) met a more displeasing person. I remember thinking he could almost be put in a museum and studied as an oddity.

Robyn O'Neil

I liked this episode

Nick Broketah

Get Mike Ma on. These burnt out Hollywood types are getting stale.

BrienPiechos

🙄 give me a break man

nwp

Great episode.

Tom Davidson

Don’t understand the hate Max is human He was also notably calm and bright when talking about his writing which is obviously something he enjoys

Kerry

Need to watch ‘Triangle of Sadness’ now. To me, the setting (ship) is what the new season of White Lotus should’ve been.

Thomas Matich

IDK why people are shitting on this ep. I thought it was interesting. I mean, he’s obviously fucked up, but he has a unique perspective.

Russell Reese

Please bring back those intros when you the writer, for an hour or so, talk about your life. It was the only thing really interesting. Ten times more interesting, it was fascinating. The rest is... a very interesting meh.

q

Thanks for the Into the Night mention/recommendation.

Mary Walker

Ha ha that might be too full on! One wonders if many a movie maker might respond with 'I am Spartacus!'. A universal vicious cycle fed by subsuming deep inner drives and truths, to sustain the surface presentation of art and business - to satisy the presumed prevailing culture, which may itself be but another mirrored illusion? Etc.

Thomas Edwards

Wachiwski sisters....that would be 2 or 3 interesting interviews. Great sugestion. However, I don't recall ever seeing an interview with them.

Jorge Espinha

I thought this was a great conversation. I could feel the emotion and it was very interesting

Tara Jean Sulljvan

This interview was interesting! Way better than the bore that perfume dude was. And the previous guy was cool but the fast talking made it almost unbearable.

Ashley

Maybe he could bring Ye back on to provide input. 🤣

Thumperdinck

A dedicated take on Jewish culture, sensibility, generational paranoia, self loathing, eternal closeting of identity and related tropes as they do or dont inform the movie business would be fascinating. Self effacing Jewish friends in the industry are variously hilarious and insightful in private, but no doubt a risky topic.

Thomas Edwards

I hate Max Landis.

Max Haddad

Get James Toback next lmao

Keagan Afonso

So it turns out bringing Max Landis to BEE land is controversial! haha.

bpvalentine

I'd rather they just stop than to go where Max suggests, which I don't mean as any slight against him personally. Friday 8 and 9 were both cruel and unusual to fans of the Friday movies. Do I want Jason strapped to a table where goobly-gook Hollywood logic explains why a zombie keeps coming back and killing teenagers? I can probably skip that all together. I'd rather they do a better version of the remake, which I liked enough as it is. They just needed to hone it better. It was too long. I loved the whole First Blood idea.

bpvalentine

5:40 Jesse Eisenberg was in American Ultra, not Michael Cera. Lol. Common mistake, confusing either of them for the other. Other than that, good episode.

Nicholas Mata

Was Gary Glitter unavailable

Patrik Sandberg

Oh no, it cut off right as the conversation was getting good...

K U

The whiniest guest/ child ever on this podcast. Couldn’t finish the episode. So not interested in his victim narrative.

Tim Seibel

You can be against cancel culture and still dislike douchebags.

GellMon

The Therapist Easton Ellis Podcast

Lachlan Reid

All the bits discussing screenwriting and directing were great. But the commentary on his 'cancellation' came across as disingenuous to be honest. I know its the elephant in the room but I don't think he will have changed many minds.

Bazayer

Bret 💕🙏 so borinngggggg😩😩😩 plz bring someone fun like Ye or the Wachowski sisters

Anna Sofie Jespersen

Last guest had a lot to say but none of it particularly interesting or revealing. I didn’t find him interesting even though, on paper, he should be. An accused rapist, screenwriter, son of John Landis should be a home-run, and yet…he’s a bore. The Adderall guy you want to escape from at a party.

honker_2021

honker_2021

I want to be open minded. I could see how a tragedy like that could affect a kid. HOWEVER, this is like listening to the male version of Mena Suvari. Couldn’t get through that interview. Trying with this one, but he just sounds like the epitome of the generation that didn’t get spanked…and needed to.

Phoenix

an untalented rapist cmon, wasnt the justin long barbarian character entirely based off him?

Tyler Grady

very intense and super interesting. I'm a huge fan of John Landis, especially INTO THE NIGHT!

FlyingWaffle

Not a bad idea at all. I want to know about Spacey's dynamic with his father who he claims to be a neo nazi. What were those dinner table conversations like.

Joseph Orlando

This was a damn good episode. I was skeptical, but ultimately won over. Really pumped for part two. Regarding Halloween Ends...I am in complete alignment with his take on it. I wanted to love it instead of just liking it. Admire the swings, but there was more insanity to be mined from the material that they failed to capitalize on. Hope they release an extended cut.

Joseph Orlando

Thank you for this - was a great episode.

Gary Chadwick

I fully agree with his take on where the Halloween and Friday the 13th stories should go, tho.

Kristeen

It felt so good when it was over.

Kristeen

Phenomenal, Bret. This is why I subscribe. Bold moves, looking forward to part II.

Dustin

Max Landis is revolting for so many reasons that have nothing to do with any alleged misconduct.

Thumperdinck

I would love if he interviewed Kevin Spacey.

Jorge Espinha

Bret you should make this a series. Interviews with The Canceled. There has to be more dimension to their stories than what was plastered in the press. Kevin Spacey next! 😀

Jon A.

Can people pop a xany and calm down? Geeeeze.

Anthony Giancola

As someone who wasn't a fan of Max's smug, rainbow dipped persona, I give him credit for being honest and open in this interview, taking accountability and trying to grow and be a better person. Looking forward to part 2.

R. M.

It’s very telling to read the hate comments, even though this is probably the first time they’ve heard the guest speak.

Mark DeCaro

I love Into the Night. I’d hoped BEE would talk about it someday.

Paul Richardson

This should be interesting...

Joseph Orlando

I knew that Max knew last week’s guest J.D so I did wonder whether Landis would make an appearance on the pod. Low and behold a week later he appears. Thought this was a pretty interesting episode. Especially all the stuff about residential boarding schools. TrueAnon did a good series called “The Game” about how awful these places are. Paris Hilton has spoken extensively about her experience of being “kidnapped” in the middle of the night and taken to one of these schools in Utah. Anyway interested to see what the second part of the interview will bring….

Timothy

Not even someone worth separating the art from the artist from …. Next weeks guest Bryan Singer

OSOS

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I think we can't label everything as "the metoo movement going mad" several women came forward and the accusations are very serious. On his own admittion he did horrible things. I'm more than happy to discuss art with Max, but he's far from being kosher. As for his father, he fucked up, and having his career hurt was a small price to pay

Jorge Espinha

ah man, that's a subversive guest right there ✌🏼✌🏼...only on the BEE Pod ✌🏼✌🏼

Neil G.

Hey guys, thanks for this, I appreciate the candor of this episode and I am sympathetic to at least hearing Max’s story. I really know nothing about him, and am listening without any prior opinion. Life is a Pigsty, we all have our fuck ups, whatever - I’ll at least hear him out and judge for myself. A lot of great info on screen writing, and for what it’s worth - The Three Amigos is one of my favorite movies (I saw it twice at Northwest Mall AMC in the 80’s.)

Seneca Garcia

Bret working really hard keeping that going. Jesus.

Patrick

At times felt like a madcap parody of where we are in 2022, which was the only thing keeping me engaged. What a monumental bore

Moz

Bret has a future as a therapist.

Christy A

Should post part 2 on Tuesday next week so that we can say "see you next Tuesday." No, not Max's thing, but close enough?

bpvalentine

Great episode thank you

PETER GREER

Strong choice. Riveted by the whole thing. Looking forward to part 2.

B$

This guy is indescribably irritating. The last two guests have been very poor choices. I am a big fan of the podcast, but please invite an adult next time. There is more to life than adolescent narcissism and cheap horror movies.

Steve

Fuck max landis. Come on.
