S6E18: Seeming Awfully Normal

A.M. Homes and Bret Easton Ellis continue their conversation and discuss the challenge of presenting madness on the page, the glaring lack of great humorless novels and the endless pleasure of Woody Allen's Interiors. Part 2 of 2.

I had such a funny reaction to this two parter. I found the host's descriptions of this writer's book super engaging and intriguing. Then the longer the conversation went the less interested I became in the guest and her story. Until her thoughts on the Eagles- I love that question- virtually capsized any interest I initially had. Strange.

Coming from a coward, who won't show their face, I'll take that as a compliment.

Richard Luna

Does anyone have a preferred translation of Balzac's Lost Illusions? There's a new one by Raymond MacKenzie that supposedly conveys the "spirit" of Balzac really well, but before that it seems the one by poet Kathleen Raine was generally preferred.

Tom Syverson

I think Bret was a little tipsy

J.A.

Excellent guest/episode. Speaking of authors - Bret references David Shields so often he just has to come back on the podcast !

Bazayer

Currently reading "May We Be Forgiven" and really enjoying it! Dark humour does it for me. Also it may be Bret riding high on the conversation in this, but he sounds a bit tipsy (excitable) here and I love it.

Alex Bielovich

You seem like a nice guy. We all make mistakes. Don't sweat it.

Thomas Edwards

My point was...why bring it up at all? I never think of Donald Trump. It's so two years ago.

Richard Luna

A.M. was a great guest. She even mostly seemed to agree with Bret about his issues with woke culture. Just because a large population on the left has gone mental, that doesn’t mean that all accusations of racism are unfounded or that we shouldn’t be critical of Trump.

N.M. Janice.

Yes. And I’m tempted to read Allen’s latest batch of old/new short stories … The memoir is an easy, enjoyable read. As is It Never Ends by Tom Scharpling.

Brian Rooney

Certainly the best guest in recent memory … Sabbath’s Theater, Stardust Memories, Enlightened, Lou Reed … That oughta do it for me.

Brian Rooney

Man, novelist guests are really great on this podcast!

Bobby Miller

I def noticed this. I thought maybe Bret was pouring one too many out. Maybe it’s the audio tho

Scott Kleckner

Is the audio in this episode slightly timestretched or am I going crazy? I’m hearing some slight glitchiness in both voices that sounds like it’s slightly slowed down. Wasn’t like that in part 1. Maybe my player is bugging out.

Casey

I love hearing about the NYC literary scene, great interview.

Phoenix

You missed the point, Comrade Snowflake.

Richard Luna

It was not Holmes’ interpretation that early reviews of Morrison were racist, she stated a fact. If you are out, good riddance.

Kerry

You are guilty of playing the same “team sports” as the liberals you most certainly loathe. Pull your head out of your ass and keep an open mind. Just because liberals are whacked out and hysterical doesn’t mean that Kellyanne Conway is cool or that no one ever wrote a racist review of a Toni Morrison book. Wake up!

Joe Paluck

So glad Bret mentioned that last episode of the Bear where John Bernthal’s character looks over his shoulder and smiles as “Let Down” hits its crescendo…. chills! It all came together in such a satisfying way I couldn’t believe it. I teared up because it reminded me of the good-old-boys love and camaraderie of my rural youth.

Joe Paluck

I purchased Apropos of Nothing today and was cackling within the first three pages - this is for sure one of the best things(in general) to come out in the last two years - it’s like Woody Allen’s version of Bob Dylan’s Chronicles - Oh, what a splendid reminder/suggestion - Perfect. Yesssss

Seneca Garcia

The minute she mentioned Toni Morrison, I knew the next word was going to be...racist! Predictable, self satirizing. Sorry, Bret...I'm out. Trump??? Stop this ridiculous shrew from "hate speech"

Richard Luna

Kellyanne Conway??? Really??? That's all this talentless hack has got??? To quote Elon Musk...BORING!

Richard Luna

No, I am grossly misinformed. I'll be climbing under a rock now.

bpvalentine

Well that's embarrassing! I'm going to edit this post but explain the mistake. I ...was misinformed. Obviously!

bpvalentine

michael douglas is still alive

Sean _ G_ Schofield

Dude, Michael Douglas didn't die.

Nick

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Are you a bot?

Alexander Quattlander

NOTE: This is pretty embarrassing. I mistakenly announced Michael Douglas's death. I'll laugh one day, but for now I'm super embarrassed! I'm also happy Michael Douglas remains among us. Apologies to everybody. I sincerely hope I didn't bum anyone too badly.

bpvalentine

Enjoyed the discussion v much. Almost no Adam this ep tho. Get back in their guy. Really like your banter with BEE. Anyhoo…thanks for this. 🙌

Patrick

Excellent thank you
