Actor/Filmmaker James Morosini and Bret Easton Ellis discuss the pure cinema of Wolfgang Petersen and the riveting Rehearsal of Nathan Fielder in Part 2 of their conversation.

S6E14: Positive Perversion

Comments

I can’t believe only one person has commented on The Rehearsal. Most highly anticipated, exciting show of the year in filmmaking spaces!

Rebecca Luxton

Vortex, The Northman and Crimes of the Future are my favorites of the year so far. Super excited for The Whale though!

Thumperdinck

Who hurt you?

Travis Films

I've never seen a WH performance where I thought, "God, why did he do this?"

Travis Films

Desperate for a cinematic experience I went out to see Nope and now I'm Nope, not getting suckered in again. The lack of story and character (s) is draped over by a bunch of gobbledygook about how "this is what that scene meant" - please, give me a film that explains itself - that's what they're supposed to do.

Travis Films

My impression was that now that Morosini has kind of made it as a filmmaker, he doesn't want to fall out of favor with anyone in the industry by dissing their work.

Siamese Dream

RIP William Hurt. Broadcast News and Body Heat are great movies and he is brilliant in them both. Body Heat is the greatest neo-noir.

Ben

I didn't think James was boring per se but he seems to be one of those young people that just likes everything they see and are afraid of being critical or just saying "I didn't like it". You could tell Bret was becoming desperate for James to just say he didn't like one thing, anything. The truth is the majority of films these days are extremely overhyped. Take Jordan Peele. He must be the most overrated director on the planet right now. Bret is certainly right to label it "the cult of Jordan Peele". James was certainly articulate enough and I would like to watch his movie. As for recent deceased actors, they certainly all were only really well known for a couple of hit films. Regarding William Hurt, the part I most remember him for is his cameo at the end of A History of Violence. That had some impact but it may have just been the level of violence Cronenberg gave the audience.

David Willis

Super boring guest

Lars Johan

Was shouting ‘Body Heat’ at my car radio. All for younger guests, just not boring ones.

Kevan Christie

always thought william hurt was actually a very bad actor who never seemed to be able to fit in with the vibe of his own movies...he always seemed out of place or awkward or overacting, had some kind of stiffness or awkwardness that was not charming or effectual. broadcast news is such a bad movie and such an outdated movie "the news is so cutting edge!" lol. "the big chill" is one of the most overrated boomer garbage fires ever. no charisma amongst that cast, everyone is a cliche, throw some marvin gaye in there and call it a soundtrack i hate that fucking movie. hurt is a big zero. im not tryin to be harsh or cruel but he just seemed like a big doofus who wandered onto a set somewhere and tried to act.

Collin Myers

It’s one thing to respect movie makers for their talent, but another to give them and their movies a pass just because they make them. And so uninteresting in terms of critical analysis.

Jim Weaver

You are right on Daz (it's certainly better than my suggestion), but Boot in German is very much not pronounced like 'Boat' in English. Two oos in Boot is pronounced like bought or caught in British English. Ich bin auch Deutscher, willkommen im Club :)

Dan Zilic

It's rather "Daz Boat." In German, one 'S' is like 'Z' in English. 'SS' or 'β' is soft double-S. Two 'O's is like 'O' in English. So 'Boot' in German is the same as 'Boat' in English. Ich bin Deutscher.

One of the worst guests in a while. Seems like a nice enough guy, but his taste and insights on cinema are very pedestrian. A filmmaker who doesn’t have an attention span for most movies? I’m not saying every filmmaker has to have a Tarantino level of enthusiasm, but a general love and respect for the art form is helpful.

Hi Adam! — Because I also hate the Eagles ; ) I would like to vote for the Jacques Derrida of Independent Hard Blues, SM Malkmus episode . . . Thank You for including me in on to vote in this,& I send my Warm regards all the way from humid Houston Texas —S.

Seneca Garcia

Thank you! I will take a look… 👍

Patrick

Modern day filmmaker who struggles sitting through movies. This is where we are folks.

Adam Chin

PSA: Das Boot is pronounced "Dass Bought".

Dan Zilic

Check the feed and there’s a post with links to important posts, including a thread that they’re keeping for q and a. It’s different than the previous seasons.

Pp358

Don’t take something on your trip you cannot afford to lose 💙

Seneca Garcia

That's just , like, your opinion mannnnnn!

Jorge Espinha

I still follow the packing advice from that movie

Jorge Espinha

And a super sexy Kathleen Turner. Hot as hell

Jorge Espinha

Vortex is one of the better movies released this year

Normaling

Completely agreed with BEE about the ending of Pleasure. It totally wimped out at the end.

ben worsham

Dull AF

Steven Mills

The Rehearsal’s first episode is one of best things I’ve seen on tv for a long time!

Nathan Stewart

Top Gun the best studio movie I've seen this year, Vengeance the most surprising and entertaining movie I've seen so far this year.

Dan brown

Yeah. Bret seemed to have had a memory lapse with Body Heat. That movie established William Hurt and Kathleen Turner as stars in the '80s.

Billy Schafer

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Rest in peace Wolfgang Petersen.

Billy Schafer

Body Heat is as close as William Hurt got to a defining performance IMHO

John Fidler

That makes sense! Thank you.

Patrick

For what it’s worth re: William Hurt - Accidental Tourist is a really wonderful movie - my mom and I saw it in the theatres and we still watch it every now and then and it has become a family movie for us - that’s the seminal Hurt movie for us 💜

Seneca Garcia

Enjoyed the episode! Love the Q&A. But!!! Still unaware of how to submit a question. And yes, I am a member of the Platinum Posse. Maybe just a really stupid one? 🤷‍♀️

Patrick

LOL I was about to make this same comment. Bret’s straight meathead totty. As we say here in the UK

Keith campbell

Great. A continuation of a dull conversation with a dull person that Bret wants to fuck.
