B.E.E. Podcast Poll: 80's Tom Cruise vs. 90's Tom Cruise

Comments

80’s!

Tamara

It's like being asked who's your favourite child! I was a teenager in the 80's those movies had greater impact. I Never forgot TAPS, he had a secondary role, but the intensity! Color of Money was unforgettable. Although in my opinion his greatest performance was Magnolia

Jorge Espinha

I remember Color of Money. I saw it in a theatre in Portimão, Algarve southern Portugal, it was the last movie or one of the last to be shown there before they demolished the place. That was the trend in the 80's the end of the old theatres. What a great movie!

Jorge Espinha

Great performance

Jorge Espinha

Is it possible to dislike him since the 80s?

Marisa Urgo Shaalan

It’s not easy b/c Color Of Money, Risky Business, Born On The Forth - 80’s. But, 90’s A Few Good Men, Mission Impossible, Eyes Wide Shut, and the one that puts this decade just barely ahead - MAGNOLIA. Also, I have a friend who works for Warner Brothers in post production. My friend told me Cruise has his hand in everything- including sound editing. One day he suddenly appeared and demanded the sound editing room be cleared so he could make some sound edits. All the post production crew were shitting. But, they cleared the room and let Tom do his thing. Incredible work ethic and a great “movie star”.

80s: heartthrob / lust object / . 90s: rise to galactic movie star Tough choice

I hate Tom Cruise.

Antonio Primavera

2000s/2010s he had the best of both worlds. But, different conversation ✌🏼✌🏼

Neil G.

'80s, he had better movies. '90s his acting was better. Done deal.

Neil G.

Jerry McGuire was overrated then. His best performance was obviously Magnolia. No doubt about it.

'80s is the ascent, when he scored box office and proved his chops, but '90s was when he made genuinely interesting choices and took big swings with character and that's the Tom Cruise I miss. (Even though his death-defying action era has not been boring either.) His next move should be to do the final Tarantino film, a return to bold dramatic performance. I don't think there is anyone else who could spark that in him the way Quentin could. It also suits the Tom Cruise M.O. Go big or go home.

Patrik Sandberg

IMHO, he should have won the Oscar for "Jerry McGuire," great script, perfect performance; I felt he really put it all on the line in this role. I also think his "Top Gun: Maverick" performance is Oscar nomination worthy. And I loved his sincere "thank you" to movie theater patrons of his latest big movie, and how he literally made the careers of the young, talented but largely unknown actors in his "Top Gun" sequel.

man, tough call... 80s has the color of money, born on the 4th of july... but 90s has Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia... even the 2000s has great stuff with Minority Report, Vanilla Sky, War of the Worlds, ...

FlyingWaffle

The double episodes on Tom Cruise with Nick P were my favourites, and I went back for repeat listens. I know you're thinking of doing something similar; you should, the two of you worked really well together.

Matthew Lovett

I think I would say Tom Cruise '00s, especially if the last decade were included. I fully expected to vote '90s until I broke his credits down at IMDB. Was surprised to see how few movies there were over that decade. Maybe it was being married and having a family that slowed his roll? But, yeah. In the few years that followed Cruise's breakout in Risky Buisiness, you have Born On the 4th of July (Stone's 2nd or 3rd best, I think), Rain Man, the Color of Money, Top Gun and Legend. Cocktail sucks, but it made money. The Outsiders allowed him to work with Coppola, as well as put so-called Brat Packers on notice. Cruise made better movies later, but it's impressive how varied the roles and with who he worked right out the gate. Too bad there isn't a Snyder Cut of Cocktail. I'd like to see evidence of the original, darker script that got Cruise to sign on. I mean, Top Gun's success + experience working with Scorsese AND Newman = Cocktail???

TC managed to stay relevant after 7 years of success in the 80s.The 90s was a pivotal part of his career. Most of his cohorts was slowly becoming forgotten by the mid 90s. MI 1 propelled him into another level of stardom.

80s Taps Endless Love Outsiders Risky Business Legend Top Gun Color Of Money Cocktail Rain Man Born On The 4th Of July 90s Few Good Men The Firm Interview With A Vampire Jerry Maguire Mission Impossible Eyes Wide Shut Magnolia It comes down to several enjoyable movies (80s) Vs a few great movies and some blah ones (90s). I don’t like MI movies, The Firm is kind of crap. But Eyes Wide Shut is his best film, and Magnolia is his best performance. But, but but Top Gun, and RB are always rewatchable. I say I like Tom better in the 80s, but he did his best work in the 90s

M. Nero Nava

"Looks like University of Illinois!" 😎

I couldn’t decide. This was ridiculous. Had to go 80s though.

Andrew Packer

he made "eyes wide shut" in the '90's. that decided it for me.

Neil Anderson
