S6E8: King of Pain
Added 2022-07-18 21:04:12 +0000 UTC
Bret Easton Ellis discusses the ruination of the King of Rock n' Roll and dining with Gore Vidal as he fields questions from Platinum listeners on the air.
Earlier this week I rented a place on the Amalfi coast for a few days. After giving me the tour, the Airbnb host pointed up at a gleaming white villa perched at the very top of the high cliffs. He said that Gore Vidal used to live there. I was awestruck. Incredible , I thought. he lived like a God. A writer. A fiction writer. After hearing the story about the Mengers party, now all I can think is what a pain it must have been to drag his drunk ass back up that mountain after every boozy brunch on the beach. Around those windy mountain roads. The driving there is insane.

Enjoyed this ep. But as an Australian it’s sounds to me like Bret says Buzz Luhrmann. 😆 It’s Baz like Chaz.

It made no sense in the context of the conversation. Anyway, what you're describing sounds less edgy and more like being an asshole and a bad podcast host.

It's not the question itself that'd be edgy. It's asking someone such a question after he just got finished crying about the Uvalde shooting. It's disrespectful, it's highly inappropriate, it lacks empathy--and that's what gives it edge.

To whoever asked about why Bret didn’t ask about the Eagles: thank you! I now know Bret was just being classy and compassionate.

Asking people about The Eagles is arguably the least edgy question in the history of podcasts.

Devastated to learn of Ryan Leone’s passing. That’s what listening to these podcasts can do sometimes -- forge an unlikely bond with a stranger. But his death also made me think of my friend Dan “The Apologetic Bandit” Genis, also a former heroin addict who spent 10 years in NY supermaxes. “While incarcerated for a decade, I read exactly 1,046 books,” Dan writes in Booklist about his progression from pulp to Proust. “I kept a list, and as a result I can now track my evolution.” His book, Sentence, is one of the funniest I ever read and Dan himself a riot. Beyond prison time stories, I heard him recount battles with his Random House editors who ultimately removed entire passages from chapters like “White Power Shower Hour.” A shameless plug for a friend, I know, but Bret should totally get Dan on the podcast.

David Leo Rice. Hands down one of the best writers of his generation. Smart, funny, incredibly engaging speaker, as well. He’s a huge fan of BEE and shares with BEE very similar tastes in writers. He had his own podcast (Wake Island) which, sadly, just posted its final episode. Many of BEE’s guests have appeared on Wake Island. Can guarantee a 3 hour conversation between these two would be an all time BEE podcast highlight. Very easy to reach David. His website is http://raviddice.com/

1. Freedom
2. Purity
3. Corrections
4. Crossroads
All great. But those are my preferences … Walter and Richard in Freedom are my favorite characters … The plot of Purity is, as Franzen often says, delicious. The murder in the middle of that novel is page-turning stuff …
I recommend Bret does a deep dive on each of his own novels. An episode dedicated entirely to Rules, Informers, White, etc. ☮️

Loved the Q/A about food/cooking habits. A writer I’ve always wanted to suggest but now it seems like it’s a topic open to discussion: David Leo Rice. He has an interesting point of view and I can imagine an overlap with Bret’s sensibilities. He could be considered a genre writer. A Room in Dodge City may be of interest.

"Take some pills baby," cracked me up. And yes, get Kid Rock. Give his albums sine 2007 ands especially the ones Rick Rubin produced a spin and you'll see why people actually like him now who you would not expect. Songs like "Born Free" and "First Kiss" are great. He's great at capturing nostalgic Americana sorely needed right now. It's uncomplicated country rock and roll meant to be enjoyed, not beat you over the head with an agenda.

I agree with Bret's take that it's needlessly depressing. What that era represented was clean, high energy, and uplifting. When the movie wasn't complaining about Elvis's cultural appropriation, the oppressive government censorship, his manager's evil exploitation, Elvis cheating on his wife, Elvis repeating his mother's substance abuse. As for the exploitation bit, while he was definitely an evil man, I think Elvis's manager turned him into an icon--something more than just a singer/dancer, something ethereal, which is why we're still taking about him in 2022. If it weren't for his manager, Elvis would have just been a pop star turned lesser James Dean And, I'm glad the movie showed this to people who may not have known that.

FACT! Austin Butler was born for this role. Baz is way too self-indulgent as a director, which really bothered me in the beginning during the heavy Tom Hanks VOs. But, became less and less of an issue as they let Austin Butler do more in the movie besides just sing, dance, and look cool. I also think the movie was too long. But, again, Butler was so good he kept me invested until the end.
