I love that guy.

Todd called me a while back and told me about the Franzen thing and made me promise not to say anything. So I didn't. Been waiting all this time wondering when it was finally going to happen. Sad.

BrienPiechos

would love if Bret interviewed Gerry Howard and or Gary Fisketjon.

Darren Ankenman

I would love to hear you interview Tina Brown. That would be a fantastic interview about the Vanity Fair days and Regan era NYC.

AshSebash

Try again for FRANZEN!!!

LPR

Rock music? With guitars?? Hilarious. 😂

Matt Polityka

Hey, Adam and maybe Bret, if you read this stuff. Not to be a dick. The question I sent didn't say anything about "guilty pleasures." I said shitty songs. Songs you hate. But it's all good.

Get zeroHPLovecraft. He self published very successfully.

great picks on the soundtrack composers, specially the genius morriccone. anyone interested in more contemporary composers doing great work should check out johnny greenwood , brian reitzell and mica levi.

Todd Field, director of In the Bedroom, Little Children. He’d be an interesting guest mostly to find out what happened to his career. I thought in the Bedroom was one of the best movies of the bush years and little children was pretty damn good, too. Where’s he go? Also was in Eyes Wide Shut. That would be cool to hear about. S Craig Zahler. That’s an interesting dude. Maybe he’s been on before. Don Felder or Joe Walsh of the eagles are still alive. Why not? They’re part of the pod’s lore.

Totally agree about Bowie's Absolute Beginners - I highly recommend the live version from 2000 (https://youtu.be/T4tThlKubIA). I also love his concept album, Outside, from 1995. Very cinematic.

Father Stu just wanted to say “God bless you Adam, no offense taken.” He still loves the podcast!

Jim Weaver

Laughed out loud imagining Todd posing as Bret's assistant emailing Franzen to get him booked. Thank you for your effort Todd, please try again when you can.

Charlie C

My first thought for composer. His scores are magnificent

If we could get an artist like a Richard Prince or have Alex Israel back on. (Remember those days? When Bret was making art for Gagosian. Rock n’ roll.)

Just HEARING the name Michael Mann gives me that icy stomach drop of fear that only recollections of working with a true Hollywood tyrant can conjure up-in an instant, 15+ years later. The most epic bullying a-hole I’ve ever worked with in show business, and that’s saying a hell of a lot. Sitting in his WLA Forward Pass office there was a woman crying hysterically somewhere out in the outer office area, and it was as if nothing at all was happening, he didn’t bat an eye and everyone just kept busily shuffling around, eyes to the ground. Just another day in paradise. The whole place had a vibe of fear bordering on terror that felt like some tiny island run by a crazed dictator, everyone on eggshells and having no idea what explosions of fury or crazy chaos could be coming next. He’d keep us until like ten at night, and then we’d get the call, He would see us now, and we were expected to actually RUN down the hallway to his office. That was my ‘f this’ line I refused to cross. Speaking of PUBLIC ENEMIES: they somehow kept it out of the press, but Depp hated him and finally had enough of his maniacal control freakism and abusive behavior and just upped and split, right after a take (probably like take 43) from the Wisconsin location for like three weeks, throwing things into utter chaos, even by MM shooting schedule standards. SO I’VE HEARD anyway. But in fairness the man is maniacally obsessive when working, demands as much or more from himself than anyone else, maybe he’s mellowed with the ‘new Hollywood’ (something I cannot begin to imagine…what even IS Hollywood without abusive assholes and all the people willing to take it to work with A-listers, to Get Ahead?) and he definitely can hit genius auteur level quality when firing on all cylinders. ROBBERY HOMICIDE DIVISION is some of the most brilliant network TV ever made IMHO, sadly undone after only its first 13 by Tom Sizemore’s demons and a network (CBS) that did not have the right audience base for the gritty thoughtful hyper violent slice of LA underbelly it offered up. Ah, memory lane…

The Batman comics have been pretty serious and grounded overall since Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Lynn Valley, and John Constanza's Dark Knight Returns in 1986. Anyone who even vaguely knows comics understands what a game changer it was along with Watchmen, Batman: Year One, and Daredevil: Born Again that came out around the same time. Burton's films were serious for their time, they just seem silly after all that's come since then. I think The Batman is the best Batman film, the Nolan films are amazing and revolutionary in a lot of ways. They'll always have an all time great performance from Heath Ledger and a very good and underrated performance from Tom Hardy. They still hold up and will be watchable for a long time, but I think overall The Batman is a step forward.
