I think the killer is the cult in the van and Robert Mallory will save Bret from them in the end.

Patrick

Thank you Kovitch. I've got a sub--a great little read.

Andrew Martin

Will you do a review of ‘Pig’ Bret?

Frank Formica

Roman Polanski. Well, OK, not in LA.

Michael Walsh

Great to hear Bret’s reviews back. Post Pandemic and The Shards, I’d be more than happy with the pod becoming a full blown movie reviews podcast with Bret reviewing stuff new and old and giving bi weekly thoughts on the film landscape. Maybe the occasional film loving guest

Will Cross

MW’s riposte to B about ‘Film versus TV’ full of own goals (‘I had to write an additional 9 pages of dialogue to enable a car crash’), and while the dichotomy between the 2 mediums has blurred in recent years, the fundamental differences remain intact (namely scale, the relationship with time and the primacy of the image in film). Bizarre he won’t concede the aesthetic differences between ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Goodfellas’ / ‘The Godfather’.

Kovitch

Yep, that’s the one. Hard to find tho. Need a NYer subscription.

Kovitch

If you want to read the longer, unedited version, hit me up somehow

I wish all future episodes would be time warps!

I like how no one believes who the killer is - I often thought about the story turning to where everyone thinks the narrator is responsible for the deaths - also, I finished the Novel Once Upon A Time and thought it was better than the movie - super duper good stuff coming out of this podcast,

Seneca Garcia

Solid. That show he did, 'Now Apocalypse' was hilarious. Very accurate as far as the LA acting scene goes.

Bret and Adam, Hope you keep the 2 Hr + format, love the commentary and interview combo! Maybe mix it up with some questions submitted through this comment section, that’ll keep ears even more perked up. I enjoyed your end of year question/answer podcast, but it seemed almost too much to get through on your end, resulting in short changing some answers.

Jim Weaver

I sometimes think it would be interesting to see what scripts you would write if you were paired with the writing equivalent of a "stuffed shirt", someone with a rigid (but not progressive) view of what's decent and in good taste. Would the collaboration be creative, or, would the combination of THE author of "transgressive" fiction and such an individual in tight quarters result in a huge explosion?

Sean Nunya

Agreed. That was a great one.

I remember listening to this interview and I *think* I can usually tell when BEE gets bored with his guests. This was one of those, Maybe it’s because they went to school at the same time & orbit, I get the sense that BEE still has those high school notions of “he’s such a dork” in the interview or I could be projecting. Always enjoy the old podcast interviews and look forward to the final installments of The Shards.

Ever since episode 19-20 The Shards has been on a roll! Very exciting. Specially now that it's about to be over.

WOLF STAR

That Movie "In The Heights" looks dreadful and sounds dreadful. As soon as Bret said the movie literally starts at a DACA protest I knew we had a gem there xDD The fact that the movie has a 95% on RT shows the state of film criticism. It's not about filmmaking in fact all the articles about the movie talk about "erasure of afro latinos" and that LA Times articles of "audiences need to change their perspective on what a good movie is" just shows American film criticism is in the gutter.

Near the start of the Weiner interview, Bret mentions a New Yorker article written by, Michael Tolkin. Can anyone name the title of the piece? 'The Hollywood Complex' April 19, 1993?

Andrew Martin

David Robert Mitchell would be perfect (and Bret should interview him!)

David

I literally lol’d when BEE described giving in to temptation and paying 16 dollars for the Cruella rental after boredom and too many martinis set in. Relatable. After seeing the trailers the description matches my expectation of that movie. It sounds good conceptually—though I never pictured Cruella as a street urchin. I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for her. Aspirational indeed. The anecdotes from Podcast ONE were interesting as well. I forgot just how big some of the guests were. Hopefully we have access to those again. On the PodOne site many of the links are broken—even if you subscribe to premium I’m hearing. Good episode.

Dirk

I have to admit I used to get a big laugh every time Bret said ‘Dollar Shave Club’…it was ever so slightly slowed down and punched that highlighted both his mild derision, and the absurdity of Bret Easton Ellis selling a razor blade subscription, the height of podcast and social media driven unnecessary new products or services. BTW, my partner bought them, and they SUCK…two (poor) shaves and they rip your face to shreds.

MikeE

Can we get podcast where you talk with Rob Zombie? I’ve searched everywhere for it but it never plays

Adam Dugger

Brett Easton Ellis hellooo

Fernando

Thanks for resharing this conversation with MW, been wanting to relisten for ages.

Don’t change to weekly, Bret. These long ones recently have been an absolute joy to anticipate and an immersive pleasure to listen to.

Reservoir Frog

Is The Shards version of Bret just coping with the death of his friend / lover and choosing to blame a mysterious student?

Detuned Gloom

Thank you for including the reviews!

Brian Rooney

Quentin Tarantino seems to be digging the story

Blake Benson

De Palma

Brian Rooney

Episodes are never too long Bret!!!!

Jorge Espinha

It has to be some unknown director as the budget will be less than $1 mill. Hardly a film with an all white cast will be made in 2021 Bro.

Knokkel knokkel

Who should direct The Shards - the movie?

Mikael Pawlo
