Redoing a listen of the Shards...the first time I listened to this, I got stressed when Susan saw Bret. I don't know how he kept it together because I would have cried, my heart would have been pounding. I've read the book and I wanted to do another listen just to see what I missed and it's so obvious how much Susan was over Tom by this point. The part when Bret talks about going to Palm Springs w Susan & Tom reminded me of the part in Less than Zero where Clay & Blair go away for that week. The image of Blair playing solitaire by herself is one that stays in my mind often. I just listened to the newest episode and honestly if Kaia Gerber is able to play Susan....that'd b amazing...that's who I pictured listening to this episode. Anyway my point is why does Bret care about all this? I was frustrated the first time listening and I'm frustrated this time...I'm like...you're not being a good tangible participant....are you mad at Susan for being one? It's bc he loves Tom he doesn't want him to get hurt also. Anyway I think Susan figures out Bret is gay on the Palm Springs trip...I think Susan did romantically love Bret at one point and maybe would have gone for him...but he never made a move...idk how to explain it. Bret loved Susan too much to rope her in a fake relationship even if he had had the chance to, I think. The brown van....now I'm like PI? Sorry this comment is very rambly. Loved Robert S. as a guest btw....gonna watch The Argument soon... The trawler letter was so creepy...

Thank you so much for this, it really helps save me time from scrolling through all the posts! I'm so lagging behind in the Shards episodes, so this helps me catch up

Yes. Tried to go to a film yesterday (upstate NY). Sat waiting for it to start. No dice. I had to track someone down. Turns out the schedule was wrong. Place understaffed and out of sorts. A post-Covid recovery issue, I suppose. But now I'm even less eager to return to the theater experience.

Michael Walsh

Thanks for the mention, listened to it now. I actually read "Boy Parts" last month and noticed the similarities at the time.

Unconnected but there was a new BBC Radio 4 doc on ‘American Psycho at 30’ this week. Featured an I/V with Bret. Worth a listen.

Does anyone know how many episodes does the Shards have? I've recently joined and I'm enjoying it very much

Shards Shards Shards!!!!

Angry and critical BEE is the best. I love that he hates 90% of contemporary cinema LOL. The Archlight not re opening is indeed saddening. At least there's still Tarantino's New Beverly.

Dirk

Awwww Thank you so much! Also wanted to LOL at this episode : Bret exasperated about the ocean of content and getting discovered “It’s sounds daunting! It sounds daunting! “ LOL

Seneca Garcia

Terrifying chapter of the Shards...well done.

In my opinion the experience of the movie theater has to improve. People can make delicious food at home but they still love to go out to eat. Why should movies be any different? Better screens, better sound, nicer interiors where you can hang out even if you're not there to see a movie. You have to invest something in the culture if you want it to thrive.

Alex Waller

To be honest I was done with the Shards, but this brought it back ! Great ep and moved things forward as well as sending out some chills.

Billy Vega

Jesus fucking Christ.

Dan Citriniti

Fantastic chapter, definitely my favourite so far ! Bret your narration is excellent, adds so much to the experience.

larrylegend

Bret go see the new Michel Franco film New Order in a theater. You’ll be renewed.

Lots of people have said some of the episodes previous have been slow, which I tend to agree. But episodes like this make up for all that. I think had I been reading this as a book or able to listen to more than one episode every two weeks, it would be unnoticeable. Amazing Shards episode. Plot heavy episodes with lots of scenes of Bret driving are always winners.

the jackie brown mosaic wall is in an exit walkway, so only viewable when you are leaving, i don't remember which terminal.

grainpulp

My jaw on the floor! Eek! I love the "teenage detective" setup - could have listened to that for hours. And the set piece at the end had me screaming!

grainpulp

Downloaded sitting in LAX - *perfect* - (also, tried asking someone about the Jackie Brown mosaic wall :P)

This one slammed me. Its always sort of felt this way but this was the episode where its playing as a metaphor for all that was lost, stolen, from one by being gay or bi in high school in a certain era (I’m a bit younger than Bret but solidly an Xer) really just dove a stake through my heart and the pain of that loss-not in the sense of being a victim, though in a sense we certainly were-just came heaving out of me in a way it never has. I’ve no idea if part of the intent of the piece for Bret is the creation of this metaphor but jumping Jesus it’s sure working for me on that level. I’m taken back to that feeling of aching longing that there’s not a thing to be done about, the one foot in the moment, the other in the secret private interior space, the hopelessness that it’ll ever get better. The incredible crushes and indeed loves that existed only in my mind, what could have been, lost forever.

MikeE

The next lunchtime meetup at Buckley is going to be total awks

Todd

Faaark. So intense!

David

Another incredible episode of the Shards

Jerome Busca

The idea of Bret watching the New York Ripper had me smiling from ear to ear.
