The B.E.E. Podcast - 4/4/21 - Nicholas Jarecki - SILVER

Homecoming is fast approaching at Buckley and the student body is shaken by a shocking rift in Part 16 of The Shards. Filmmaker Nicholas Jarecki and Bret discuss the unfortunate erosion of the communal moviegoing experience, the many challenges of making Crisis and the critical consequences a film can suffer when one of its stars becomes the subject of a scandal.

Yeah he did

WOLF STAR

I would love it if BEE moved off the "woke" patreon platform. He could easily set up his own simple website for almost nothing and keep more money too.

Travis Films

Love the Barone’s shout out. One of my favorite spots in the valley

Entertaining, intelligent and humble - Nic nailed the trifecta. Great questions for him Bret, and even better job of letting him answer at length. Shards rocks on, and gonna check out Crisis. Crisis review: don’t read until you’ve seen it, if you’re going to. I tried really hard to make it all the way through, trying to find a character that was worth caring about. Nope. Checked out at an hour and 40 minutes. Felt like I was watching a bunch of overly dramatized, stilted scenes, with dialogue to match. Performance wise, I’d give it to Armie overall, definitely the most nuanced and warm. Evangeline overwrought throughout, and Gary made me almost miss him in Mank, a film which I barely got through.

Jim Weaver

Listening to Hollywood insiders like this, it's an absolute miracle any movie gets made.

I would pay $50 each for rereading of American Psycho and his other novels on audio book., Read by Bret Easton Ellis

Erick

West Coast.

Arthur Ricardo Sousa Machado

Want to know what everyone thinks of The Eagles AND Biggie Smalls moving forward - east coast, west coast, what’s the best coast?

Thomas Matich

Did Nic say he has a 23 old gf? I must have heard that wrong.

Constantine

I still remember that Lobster Club Nick was excited to eat at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Then he wasn't hungry anymore.

Rob Motto

Surprised he said Crisis succeeded in Australia. I remember it in theatres but you had to be on the theatre’s website to know the film even existed.

Tom Davidson

Entertaining guest, didn't hold back when asked the tough questions. I love how he compared The Eagles to Notorious BIG lol. Please have him back! I'm about to watch Crisis right now.

Phoenix

Watching Crisis now. Is an excellent movie

MITCHELL SILVERMAN

Jarecki is like the perfect guest. Loved em. Shards needs to get back into R. Mallory. I could listen to Bret forever.

Mark DeCaro

Yes. Like (aspiring writer) Nick Carraway. Booze, cars, sex, death, the mysterious outsider- it’s hard not to compare BEE to Fitzgerald.

Michael Walsh

Re Shards - makes me think how maybe the writer has to be on the outside, an outsider (an outsider on the inside?) — also, maybe getting everything you want, only corrupts. Although American Psycho is arguably my favorite novel, I suspect it may be a tad overrated (due to its sexiness). In my humble opinion, I think this might be your best novel.

After a 20 year decent Hollywood career doing A but wanting to do B (produce) I finally tossed in the towel a few years ago while I still had time to do something else with my life (after getting oh so close a few times, making writers a quarter mil to my literally begged for $25K ish development fees along the way.) Sometimes I second guess/beat myself up/feel melancholy about this decision, but then I’m snapped back to reality by stories like the one in this wonderful conversation. A fantastic Mamet script updating Kurosawa with Jarecki to direct, Scott Rudin producing, and (I imagine) WME behind the whole thing can’t get set up. I get down on my knees and thank god I got up off my flattened, worn chair at the slot machine I’d pulled the lever on so many times my arm was going to fall off and got the F out of Dodge. It’s just SO hard....even if something is the biggest piece of shit imaginable I have respect for people somehow bringing into existence at all. It definitely takes the kind of energy Jarecki had in this interview....woah. I’ll have a cup of that...

MikeE

Good conversation. I've always enjoyed Arbitrage and wondered what the director was up to. Crisis was really good. It is too bad we weren't able to catch it in a movie theater but happy to hear its doing well with rentals.
