He's done the podcast. It was very interesting especially about financing since Baker has worked on microbudgets. I wouldn't mind hearing from him again.

Hey Bret, I enjoyed your interview with Ryan though I was slightly unconvinced that his videos of him doing drugs were as organic and candid as he claimed (which is likely just me being petty) but I enjoyed his candor nonetheless and I purchased his book. There are three films I watched recently that I found aged better over time that I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on: Sam Mendes’ American Beauty, Woody Allen’s Radio Days, and Barry Levinson’s Avalon. I just rewatched American Beauty last night and was struck by how salient the imagery and themes were and how they blended together to create such a prophetic portrait of things to come and more importantly the tone and style that carried the film through some of its weaker moments. I was also struck by how you could absolutely never make that movie today given it’s unabashed satirical nuance and somewhat sympathetic portrait of a 40 year old man obsessing over a teenager. Radio Days and Avalon are very similar movies both concerning the creep of attention grabbing mediums (Radio and TV) into the cultural lexicon but done so through rose colored glasses that communicated a love for the times in which they were set. No real question here I suppose but I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts on these films and more specifically their themes and how they may or may not relate to the present moment. I love The Shards and can’t remember the last time I looked forward to episodes of anything this much. Also, did you ever think you’d see the day Dr. Seuss was more controversial than American Psycho?

I thought he might have! Been a listener since the beginning, I’ve lost track a bit...

Sean Baker had already been on the podcast.

Same thought. I wonder if Bret knows Cory Finley, who wrote and directed Thoroughbreds... I remember him having lunch with a film director that fits this weekend’s preview. Robert Eggers, Ari Aster, Safdies, George Saunders, Jennifer Egan, Gillian Flynn, Jonathan Ames, Franzen, Bill Maher, Brian Koppelman, Alec Baldwin, Richard Prince ...

It says Baker is from New Jersey, but would be cool if he were the guest.
