The B.E.E. Podcast - 3/7/21 - Ryan Leone - SILVER

An unlikely source delivers Bret some grisly details surrounding Matt Kelner's murky demise in Part 14 of The Shards. Writer Ryan Leone and Bret discuss crafting a novel in a prison computer lab, losing everything to the pleasure of the needle and the archaic politics of prison society.

Wow. Listening almost a year after Ryan’s death. Heartbreaking to learn. Such a beautiful interview and capsule of Ryan’s essence. Rest in peace Ryan.

Buddenbrooks is SO Long and boring. Thomas Mann surpassed this many times. Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain, et al. He was a great writer.

Antonio Primavera

I'd still welcome it.

whats the book recommendation at 1:11:00

Markus Johansson

It's basically the biblical creation myth told from a Gnostic/Divine feminine perspective, and though I love this sort of esoteric tale, I found Mother to be a bit ham-fisted. I liked it a hell of a lot more than Requiem, though.

Did you really go through all this Brett?? This chapter is absolutely devastating and I can vividly imagine now what something traumatic like this was like to go through and eventually live through. This is all in a territory that is past and is exempt from any kind of formal aesthetic judgement. I hope this never really happened and it’s almost unbelievable if it really did. Barring the end of Lunar Park about the fictional son running away, this resides in a territory fathoms past that. This is by far heaviest episode, and don’t know what else to say, except I am bewildered . . .

Seneca Garcia

This is a great idea. Break out each chapter as its own episode, labeled as chapter one, chapter two, ect. I try to tell friends to listen to The Shards, and it gets confusing as to where to start. Plus, I think if it was neatly laid out, it could set the stage for more media and literary attention. That is, if that's what Bret wants.

John

Yes. I would ultimately agree. The phrase “low-volume Weezer” will never leave my brain. Glamorama is #1. But I do love Lunar Park. Using previous open lines of previous novels to open a book is bonkers genius.

Brian Rooney

Feature request : On a technical note, it would be great if you could add chapters to the podcast episodes, making it easier to find our way through different portions of them.

Thomas G

Jeremy Roberts YES I've been thinking this for a while now. Robert Mallory is the side of Bret that was able to invent Patrick Bateman. I don't pretend to know EXACTLY what's going on in this story, but there are several hints that Bret is involved in the murders. Going back and listening to chapter two, it becomes pretty clear. (talking fictional Bret here, of course)

John

I nominate Ryan as THE hottest guest ever on the BEE Podcast. *Maybe* James Deen gives some competition. I guess we'd need some more info about Ryan to really know, if you know what I mean.

John

Just watched Mother - bizarre take on Rosemary’s Baby

Justin Christopher

Good evening Brett + Todd I know this is irrelevant to the post, please please please go on Timmy’s podcast!

Justin Christopher

Remarkable episode. This must be a f'n intense experience for the people that were there. It's now so ... obvious - where BEE the writer was born - the themes, obsessions, the emotional detachment. So different to 'podcast Bret' btw. Thanks, guys.

JEREMY ROBERTS

Heard that and it was pretty funny, however, yeah not sure if Tim and Brett are going to make that magic, Tim really works best solo or with Ray kump, also enjoying the random guests mixed in with the occasional Bruce Wagner and David Shields of the world

Fernando

Um no lunar Park is not Brett's greatest work, read the passages in glamorama where Victor meets Chloe at the Versace mansion.... "And sinead o Connor was singing this is the last day of our acquaintance..." Pure pleasure🤤

Fernando

Great episode - Ryan was a really interesting guest and Bret seemed charmed by him. After finding out what Ryan looked like I totally understand why.

Bazayer

... So, BUDDENBROOKS, you say.

CRAIG A SCHWARTZ

The universe delivers - new episode AND new BEE podcast t-shirt arriving the same day!

Karl Johansson

Incredible, the best episode of the Shards yet. Could not turn it off. This is Bret’s greatest work.

David

There’s no love inside the ice house...man, I’d forgotten alllll about that atmospheric gem! Utterly perfect mood for The Shards...BEE is really painting his masterpiece here.

Alexa Proffitt

Tim Dillon threw shade at getting booked on the BEEP on his latest podcast. He’s so overexposed in podcasting that I hope this booking doesn’t materialize. I love the Rolodex of unpredictable guests Bret gets on.
