The summer of 1981 is coming to a close with something strange about a pool house in Encino and a mysterious beam of light in Part 4 of The Shards. Writer Bruce Wagner and Bret discuss releasing Bruce's new novel into the public domain, the creative perils of publishing fiction in 2020 and losing interest in Woody Allen.

Bruce is such a handsome sob, I feel like he's ruined some lives 🤣

Florence

An amazing interview. Thank you.

Ryan L

What a wonderful 2 and a half hours.

I first used Calibre to convert the PDF to Mobi format, before using Send to Kindle. It strips all the formatting and sizes and displays really nicely on my Paperwhite.

The news everyone seemed to have missed: Bruce Wagner wrote a movie for Mike Figgis which he already shot. I'm excited!

Your simplest, least style-conscious writing, Bret, and I am starting to think your best ever.

JEREMY ROBERTS

Agree with everyone’s praise here but we should be posting our praise on public forums like Twitter to generate more listeners, which is probably the best way to support the podcast and ensure much more content moving forward.

The best part of your writing ... and your story is.... it’s real, it’s raw, it’s unwavering. Thank you. I love the consistency of the not giving a damn about the judgement of others, yet always giving a damn about the quality of your work and the depth of your storytelling. This is why you are extraordinary and move our souls.... and best of all, make us think. Tell em not to read it if they don’t like it, or more accurately , if they don’t get it. Your honesty and authenticity are why we are here being held captive by your fascinating and unparalleled use of words. You transport each of us away from our worlds into your world: your mind, your experience, your observations. Thank you for digging deeply and being raw and for sharing this chapter of your life. It’s mindbendingly addictive . I am literally hanging on to the edge of my seat. You continue to mind fuck me. And everytime I hear your voice or read your words, I am in the palm of your hand... floating in the abyss of everything unknown.

I’d argue this was the best Eagles answer. At least in awhile. Great episode. Haven’t even listened to the memoir yet. Thanks Bret and Adam for putting this podcast together!

BEE & Bruce Wagner a literary high

Just have to say the inclusion of Games Without Frontiers soundtracking that scene of the flashlight in the hills and coyotes howling is completely unsettling. Part 4 felt a little shorter but was lean and I'm wanting more now than i did on any previous installments

Don't be afraid of honesty, even if it is sexually graphic. One of my favorite discoveries is the British writer Timothy Mo, whose novels (e.g. Halo Halo, or The Redundancy of Courage) can be quite graphic, but reward those who refuse to be put off by scruples.

Michael Walsh

Is "Terry" the producer Jerry Weintraub? It all seems to fit. If so, I once met his assistant, and you're right he was creepy.

I sent the .PDF of THE MARVEL UNIVERSE to my kindle - if you look up “send to kindle” on amazon’s website it will have the instructions. Basically how I did it was save the file to my computer and sent it to my “kindle” e-mail address which is listed beside the device in amazon’s settings. It may sound a little convoluted but it actually didn’t take very long. https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle I will say that the text is kind of small on mine and isn’t changeable through kindle settings (you can zoom in but it’s not all in frame that way) - however when I set the image to landscape the font was normal size. Just a little work around but it’s worth it.

Rachel Bartlett

Part 4 was great. Got Zodiac basement scene vibes from the parking lot segment. Sex scene was tied nicely into the overall plot. Grand ! I will try to read this Wagner thing though I don't enjoy reading long form on my computer. Might be better to put up the kindle file for free ? Releasing a novel into the ether does not sound all that liberating.

Billy Vega

Part 4 of this saga was great. 2 weeks from now cannot come soon enough

That it is not a good time for art is indisputable. But the establishment is bankrupt. The only way out is through.

Audrey Rouget

That pool house! I have to admit to chuckling a little with the descriptions of phallic fish and starfish. Even without Bret's warnings, you kinda knew where things were destined right there. But it works. Not meant as a criticism so much as a benign observation.

bpvalentine

True, but newbies are stuck in a very difficult place. You can't just write a great book and have it published if it's not looked upon with favor by the establishment...and you certainly won't get reviews. BEE can self-publish because he has earned the attention and audience. It's not a good time for art.

Ken

Loved the new chapter. Wagner seems so lovely. I am excited to read his new book. So happy that he freed himself from the broken world of publishing—and hopeful that as others break free, new and better institutions can be built.

Audrey Rouget

love this august 31, 1981. i wonder if you caught springsteen at the sports arena the week prior lol

Nick Not Nolte

Fantastic episode!
