The B.E.E. Podcast - 8/23/20 - Tom Cruise Deep Dive Part 2: Dive Deeper with Nic Pizzolatto - SILVER

Comments

You CAN tell when people do their own stunts. It's what makes the MI movies so amazing to look at.

mortal trash

Imagine being Gregg Allman's son and mom's boyfriend Tom Cruise turns you on to music.

mortal trash

If Nic Pizzolatto does nothing else but True Detective 1, he can die happy. That's a lot. Few get that.

Antonio Primavera

Jack Reacher is such retarded shit.

Antonio Primavera

I had always hated Tom Cruise until Magnolia.

Antonio Primavera

NON-Fiction Essays. Please Bret! It was good enough for Joan; it's good enough for you. And this...this is one of your best.

Sean Nunya

You are a f’ing genius. That’s all.

Courtney

I don't understand the concept of paying for content just so you can complain about it in the comments.

Damien Smith

OMG BEE you made this Democratic voter shriek with laughter - poor Todd!!

Sally Worsham

Eyes Wide Shut is his best work

Tommy Stronach

No. Crowe looks totally confused directing the second half of that film. there's no away around it. Abre los ojos, the original is probably pennies spent in comparison to the gigantic vanilla sky budget and it does a better job in telling that story.

Constantine

I'm not sure why, but I love hearing about Bret and "the Millennial." The two of them bouncing around their condo, arguing, etc. I find it so amusing.

Michael McGrath

Sorry, Constantine, I have to disagree with you. I think its great. Great Aesthetic, Great Story, Great Soundtrack. I've seen the Spanish version and thought it completely lacked the both the heart and the rock n roll vibe Cameron Crowe brings to the able

Alex Waller

Have you seen it lately? That film is ridiculous and difficult to get even halfway through.

Constantine

Favourite episode in a while - loved Nic's thoughts on evolving perception of what 'smart people' and 'stupid people' consume

Harman Virdee

I mean, I know you guys really really really like Tom Cruise but the long detour talk about the merits of the tighty whities in the risky business dance number is a bit much doods. Also, no Bret Jerry Maguire hasn't aged well. in fact, its absolute garbage now. Most people would be forced to admit that. I'm reminded of A Patton Oswald stand up special where he and his brother go to see the film drunk while it was in the movie theaters and TC's character goes into one of his diatribes riddled with melodrama of course, and he announces: "we live in a cynical world. a cynical world" and Patton says his brother yells out in full theater: OH F*CK OFF. Anytime I hear anyone refer to that film I think of that.

Constantine

Oops, I meant blonde Lestat! Either way nostalgic film for the millennial snowflakes.

Ashley

no i didnt see that's why I'm asking and who's michael dorn? also who is a neolib here dipshit? maybe u can tell by my derogatory use of the word neolib that I am not in fact one...maybe get ur shit straight brother

MeekJaybird

Yeah, he's great in it. I love that movie.

Alexandru Constantin

I'm sure you saw the old woman beaten with two by fours.. Or maybe heard of Michael Dorn. Why are you fucking neolibs so dishonest?

Alexandru Constantin

Not a crazy lefty here or anything, but drone strikes have escalated under the Trump administration. Yes, Obama ramped them up after Bush, but to end the comparison there would be disingenuous. For instance, according to AP, Obama carried out 154 strikes in Yemen over the course of his 8-year presidency. Trump, however, carried out 176 strikes in Yemen during just the first two years of his presidency. And that's just one country. Moreover, Trump removed the reporting standards that allowed for the more transparent collection of this information. (For the record, I'll note Obama didn't have semi-transparent reporting standards at first, but due to congressional pressure he made the process more open. Trump ignored these pressures and has hid as much info on his drone strikes as possible.)

Mike Brand

I still say Tom is hot as blonde ghoul Louis. “Evil is a point of view...God kills, and so shall we; indiscriminately...for no creatures under God are as we are, none so like Him, as ourselves.”

Ashley

People hate Tucker because he laughs at them. They resent Bret because he doesn't respect them. COVID gave journalists the chance to be weathermen, breathlessly predicting the next storm would bring about the End of Life as We Know It. The Russia thing didn't work against the Orange One; maybe Laura would. Oh, and I re-watched True Detective based on this; I had forgotten how good it was. His understanding of religion, however, is weak.

Michael Walsh

Vanilla Sky is Tom Cruise's best film easily. Cameron Crowe brought a great atmosphere.

Alex Waller

“Everyone has their own selectivity process” says Bret as he continues to try and frame his monologue as partisan whilst only applying the blowtorch in one direction. Normally love the opening monologue but that one was awful.

Peter Walker

This episode was such a blast. Pizzolatto’s bracing honesty is a delight. Thank you both for taking the time to record an unhurried, insightful conversation about a fascinating man.

Jerry Cornelius

‘Produsorial’? ‘Produsorial’!

Nick Rowell

I wonder what Bret has to say about Galveston. Nic’s book was great while the movie was pretty bad.

Evan Goch

I see sheeple in West Hollywood diligently wearing masks when there isn't another human being within 100 feet. I stare at them in bewilderment as they nervously cross to the other side of the street, eyes cast downward in shame. Fear is the most effective method of control.

Richard Luna

Nic is fucking awesome.

fkndead

what were the murderous responses to the floyd murder? were people killed by protesters? or did bret mean the other people who were killed by cops? also: what kinda socialist actually listens to maddow...the seat of neoliberal county

MeekJaybird

Really enjoyed the last few minutes of this episode. Bret and Nic talking about the Eagles, sharing stories and laughing. More of this content, please!

Scotty Arms

Surprised to hear Bret kind of dismiss Matt Taibbi in 2 different episodes, I would have thought he would appreciate someone of the left calling out the left as fiercely as he does. I mean his last handful of columns seemed to riff of things Bret has mentioned on this podcast over the years, kind of surprised to hear the lack of interest. Although i guess it is possible he has not read him, just going off his boyfriend's impressions of him.

Joey Aulisio

You sounded really down. Hope you feel better in a couple weeks.

Alex Baverel

'We'? Speak for yourself cheeky. (-; Who consumes nightly news on Fox? I do. Not long ago, Fox’s average prime-time audience exceeded that of CBS, NBA & ABC. This is historical. Stay cute.

Benjamin Terpstra

loved this ! my non Jewish illogic tells me this might just be the best ep ever ! More deep dives please ! They focus the discussion and take it away from TDS talks.

Billy Vega

Such a weird blip but i would have liked to hear thoughts on the five minutes when Cruise was head of United Artists and put out that movie Robert Redford and Meryl Streep that nobody watched.

Eric

This Tom Cruise ep maybe could open up a new era for BEE. Career spanning deep dives on stars, where Bret designates when they were at their peak hotness.

Matt Brown

Welcome to the dark side tod

Erik Jerrard

(smirk) “Everything’s fine because I’m who I am.” is my new motto.

Claudia

hey! fun interview and deep dive. i strongly recommend that bret check out amy nicholson's book "tom cruise: anatomy of an actor"... an exceedingly well structured and researched book. a must read. there's a lot of great stuff in there but one thing that comes to mind is she lays out the depth tom brought to the table for "magnolia" (a movie you guys barely even mentioned, WTF?!). paul thomas anderson's script for the death bed confrontation scene was pretty sparse, but tom filled it in. and rewatching it recently, his performance at the end is just jaw dropping. maybe "magnolia" blows up pizzolatto's whole half-baked boomer theories? gen x meets boomer confronts the passing of the father? thank you!

grainpulp

Lol at anyone paying for more than silver, sometimes I rear at the irony that I’m one of almost four thousand who pay $2+ biweekly to enjoy an engaging interview or essay on the movies, but instead end up suffering Bret’s petulant, drawling political opinions that seem to have barely evolved since his youthful days enjoying his parents’ race-exclusive country club membership. As a displaced worker (re-employed elsewhere for way less pay) and a proud member of “Generation Wuss,” I’d love to see Bret pick any week out of my young adulthood and try to persevere through it without going into cardiac arrest or crumbling into a nervous wreck, based on the way he behaves on air! Better to laugh than waste energy being offended, don’t see how you could expect otherwise from someone who’s benefitted from lifelong privilege and attention. Gen who, again? ;) At least it’s kinda like having a friend to go to the movies with. Kept me coming back for five years! Also, any other aspiring filmmakers out there deflated by the end of this interview? The whole “feature films are dead” thing really landed this time around. :(

Kolio

Just 7 percent of journalists are Republicans. There's no centrist media in the U.S.

Benjamin Terpstra

does bret know that fox news has lied on end for years? why’s he only attack centrist media?

Javier G. Madrigal Jr.

YES

Erick

If George Orwell was alive. He would say I told you so.

Stevan Popovic

Agree with Alex completely. Love the narrative and sense of frustration of the monologue, but at times Bret sounds like an angry child irritated cause he can’t go to Disneyland in the weekend. Complaining about the mask its like complaining about not being allowed to drive drunk. Its not about you getting infected, its about you infecting others. The Tom Cruise part was extremely enjoyable. Thanks for that!

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Black Lives Matter, Covid, Trump Derangement Syndrome, Biden. All of this is proof that 2020 needs to be flushed down the toilet. Thankfully two of my heroes - BEE and Morrissey - haven't succumbed to the groupthink bullshit. Sad though that this year has ruined so many people for me, including all those stars who bailed out the violent rioters and looters, and all the other halfwits who believe every cockamamie mainstream-approved narrative.

Christopher Ward

I remember hearing Cher's son Elijah Blue Allman on Howard Stern talking about the time his mother was dating Tom Cruise and mentioning that Tom had pretty good taste in music and turned him onto T.Rex. So, Tom Cruise DOES think about music!

Vito Valenzuela

Yes Mickey Rourke, a deep dive is required, the good and bad.

Joseph Orlando

Also great ending to monologue, went and googled Tower Bar LA :)

T

Now do lung cancer.

James Reeves

Agreed. How can Brett quote California case and death numbers that happened WITH DISTANCING AND, LOCKDOWN AND MASKS and act like the numbers would have been the same without lockdown.

Reservoir Frog

Mickey Rourke deep dive, please.

Iain

And get Rob Lowe to do it with

Andrew Hannaker

Patrick Swayze deep dive

Andrew Hannaker

Don't really get how Covid cannot be taken seriously. Fauci himself gave a worst case of 100,000 deaths and now we're close to 200,000. Without the safety measures that have been taken the toll could be well over a million, which would be easily twice the amount of casualties the USA suffered in WW2. I get everyone is sick of hysteria but its a big mistake to mix Covid in with the culture wars. Everyone has an interest keeping everyone including themselves healthy from the virus

Alex Waller

Imagine everyone knowing you crossed into Pakistan in 02 and feeling pretty good about a Seal team not showing up in your bedroom. But I digress. You must have not watched much Fox News in those days because during every lull. God, I miss lulls. There was nothing but golf, brown suits, no ties, sleeves rolled up etc.

.

It's cute how American 'liberals' pretend that Obama was just a 'bore' and Fox News was angry about his brown suits. Nothing to see here etc. But imagine living in Pakistan. Then imagine Obama’s 262 drone strikes. That's five times as many under Obama as under Bush. But muh feels?

Benjamin Terpstra

Bret delivers a monologue criticizing mindless authoritarian control freaks and is rewarded with mindless control freak comments telling him what he should be saying and focusing on.

Harrison Bergeron

Bret’s calculation of the Covid deaths per population in California was an order of magnitude out. It’s 0.025% not 0.25% ... which only makes his point more strongly.

Dr_Tad

What an excellent podcast ! Great great episode. Bravo 🙏🏻🍁🍂

Knokkel knokkel

You can always unsubscribe. Bret does what Bret does and I love it.

Erick

Bret comments on pop culture, the virus hysteria is basically pop culture, pushed upon society by the people in power.

Erick

Just do it, why talk about it? Stop paying :)

T

I don’t disagree with his thoughts.

.

If Bret is working on a novel, I bet it’s going to be one of his best... Is gold worth the upgrade from silver?

Brian Rooney

Bret, I hope you do more career spanning actor reviews. This Tom Cruise double episode replaced the Quentin Tarantino interview episodes as my favorite. Thanks for this fun.

James Reeves

Trump and culture wars monologues are getting incredibly tedious. Everyones aware of it, it's boring but also to act as though it's just the left being hysterical is untrue. Each extreme justifies each other. The subject is dull.

Thomas Raworth

Well, you're only paying Silver, so... Dude, do you hear yourself? "I'm paying you money, so I demand no thoughts I disagree with!" And yeah, that's what media does. You're speaking like every other news source didn't bend over backwards to get Obama and Hilary elected, but we should demonize FOX NEWS because why? Again, you don't like the message? By the by, FOX NEWS has at least been reporting more actual news the last several years while all other media has this "ignore the violence and degradation happening in the cities. Just accept our pandemic rules even as they seem to contradict each other depending on the week. No masks. Oh, just kidding, you NEED MASKS! Trumps's a racist for ending travel to China. Oh, but he's negligent because he didn't act against China sooner! Seriously, none of that troubles you? Of course not. You're obsessed with the orange monstrosity. Guess what, dude. NOBODY HERE LIKES TRUMP. But it isn't FOX NEWS making the "yokels" elect Trump. It's people like you who write self righteous posts like yours here. It's the media BS.

bpvalentine

I have enjoyed these Tom Cruise episodes eh.

AceMcWicked

I had to hit pause after the tomato can blurb and seriously consider why I’m continuing to pay for this. I know the “both sides” people are the worst but Jesus Christ millions of people voted for a game show host over the Secretary of State in 2016. We spent 8 years listening to Fox News cry about Obama wearing brown suits. The guy was a mediocre bore and an absolute snooze fest yet they whipped up the yokels into a frenzy night after night with their bull shit leading to a malfunctioning cartoon as leader of the free world! And now I’m paying you to tell me how nuts the libs are?

.

Yay finally

Erick
