Coming into Bloom AD FREE

Though a relatively simple and straight forward conservation, the results on this lovely painting of peonies truly exemplifies the effect the right kind of treatment can have on a painting.  From dull and lifeless to vibrant and electric, this painting, and the flowers are now coming into bloom.

Nothing like a random game of 52 million pickup to get the blood pumping, eh?

Have you heard of Our Restoration Nation on YT?! They just found a portrait with amazing history in the basement of a colonial house they're restoring from a fire! Collab? ;) I've been wondering if a lot of confusion has happened when viewers don't realize "cleaning" and removing the varnish are different...πŸ€”

β€œBETWEEN THE CANVAS” Tales from the HEPA-Vac Oh Julian, tell me how it can be… That there’s dust and dirt and β€œstuff from a tree”? A stretcher can hide many things… from fur to dried out insect wings. BUT, what gives with this pine needle debris?!?!

I've been rationing the 'Behind the Canvas' episodes, thinking there wouldn't be any uploads for a while. I'm delighted to see these peonies!

In this particular case, where you cleaned UNDER the first varnish layer, which suggested a prior conservation effort that was just varnish on top of dirt, doesn’t that suggest that there’s another layer of varnish under that second layer of dirt?

Those delicate pinks just jumped off the canvas. I'm so glad you restored this gorgeous piece of work. The fact that you recognized that there was still a layer of grime under the varnish was amazing. What a beautiful piece. Thank you, Julian.

Hello Julian. Great work and beautiful final result as always. Two quick questions: - Have you ever been asked or consider the cleaning of the back of the painting? As I saw this video and recalled the "Behind the Canvas" episode about paper conservation, I wonder if it was possible to remove those stainings and what effect would that have in the back writings - As a doctor, I always get worried with your back as you pick up and move those cinder blocks. I swear I'm not implying that you are an old guy but age comes and I hope to watch your videos for much years to come! Have you ever consider building an automated pulley-based system to lower and elevate those cinder blocks? Thanks you so very much. Cheers from Portugal!

What an elegant and beautiful painting. Thank you.

Agreed that there is no audio during the varnish removal. Loving that we are seeing how this painting was meant to be seen!
