It's novel enough to him that he enjoys her company more than he would to someone who would worship or fear him. I heard some celebrities are the same way and based these interactions on the very real emotion of pining for some kind of 'normal' relationship.
Whisper hanging like this is to evoke the sense of approaching a spider. She's tied up as well, so I tried to balance helplessness with a subtle sense of danger.
