A Note About the "Main" Show Feed

Several people have tweeted to me (Dan) about not seeing main episodes show up in this feed.

Most of the time these days, the main show doesn't have any sponsors. Typically I was posting the main show here all the time, even when there were no sponsors.

Now that the main show almost never has sponsors, it probably doesn't make sense to continue to post it here, especially because when doing so means that we don't get any download data, stats, or other information.

What do y'all think?

I’m subscribed to both feeds. Works fine for me.

I have no problem with having two feeds.

I'm fine with subscribing to two feeds (public main and Patreon only bonus), but having to manually check for and delete episodes duplicated among the two is not great. Unless this makes things much easier for you, I don't think it's worth the additional hassle you create for each of your supporters.

Split would be fine if you create a second ad-free main feed for us and leave the patreon feed for only bonus episodes, but then your ad-free feed would be possible for non-patrons to steal.

I don’t care either way! I’m subscribed to both feeds and don’t find it to be much of a hassle.

Having multiple inconsistencies makes it difficult to manage. If you always had a bonus episode and a main episode, I could deal with switching back and forth between downloading the main show from Patreon vs main feed. The fact that you also sometimes don’t have a bonus episode makes it confusing if what I am seeing on the Patreon feed is a sponsor-less main episode with no bonus episode or a bonus episode with no main show because there were no sponsors. If I could rely on always seeing “main” vs “bonus” in the title, I could sort that out, but with some of the creative liberties taken with titles it adds a 3rd dimension of confusion that I do not like when I am trying to fill up my queue.

I agree with Marco in spirit, but it doesn’t bother me personally to have them split - every podcast seems to have their bonus material quirks, and having both feeds doesn’t create a problem (for me) and if it makes Dan happy that’s a good enough reason for me to do whatever Dan wants, esp if it relates to (possibly) getting advertising dollars - the only reason I can think of Dan would want us lumped into the main feed is for “authentic” numbers generated by his tools (even if, per Marco, the benefit is negligible).

+1 for Marco's comment.

I think that’s absolutely fine

I'm fine with only having the bonus shows posted here. I had not considered that it would affect your stats to listen to the main show here.
