[PUBLIC BONUS EPISODE] Interlude: Fortune Found

The forgotten town of Fortune's Fields lies in the shadow of a mesa. Desert winds stir across the Free Roads, carrying the low, mournful calls of jackals. The streets lie quiet, sun-bleached and cracked, littered with the remnants of shops and abandoned homes. Across the train tracks, half-buried in sand and shadow, a mine shaft waits, its mouth dark and inviting. Fortune is found only by those desperate enough to follow it into the unknown.

Catching up on my WBN listening and I now eagerly await the WBN folk album! An incredible musical score and the most lyrical narrative opening to boot - collaborative storytelling at its finest

Worlds Beyond Number

I just went to do a re-listen and can’t find this interlude anymore. Did it disappear somewhere or am I somehow missing it right in front of my eyes?

Shea Lee

When is the next ep?

Madeline Salter

Fahad is an Arabic name that can mean “panther” “leopard” or “cheetah” Theeeemes

Devon

Optional name for Millie’s liquor: Fortune’s Flavor. 😂 This was fun—I’ve enjoyed how wildly different each interlude has been and how it’s opened up the world of Umora a little more each time!

Liz

Lotta leg infections in these interludes, I'm noticing.

PocketNyx

My mind took a creative journey thinking about the colors and shapes of the pieces of artwork.

The Wizard Sparrow

Millie

The Wizard Sparrow

The tap tap tap rhyme was perfect for the scene.

The Wizard Sparrow

Yes it is. I just listened to it

The Wizard Sparrow

Finally listened to the whole thing. This was a delightful episode. So glad I wasn’t eating anything when they started to saw off the leg😂😂.

The Wizard Sparrow

thank u Brennan for dropping us into what feels like a mythical version of the height of gold mining in nevada, it makes my brain tingle

Clémentine Carle

Omg, I did miss an episode. Too many pods I ignore, but my eyes never miss the usual icon 😭

Skyler Pedersen

Loved this. Made me think of exploring the cave in Scarlet Hollow

Tomb

Trains. We're going to see more of the Free Roads when we come back to WWW eventually.

CanDo

What is this setting up? I thought the next campaign was a space setting run by Abria.

SOMASF

This was amazing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ But now I need an actual Campaign set in the Wild West

TheWannabePersephone

thank you for this glimmer

kragonaught

Nooo! He wouldn't do that to us twice!

Wondering wonder

I use Pocket Casts! Highly recommend!

Christian Vernon

Brennan two years from now: “You see a mining town that was once alive and vibrant, but has been fire bombed into ash shortly before you arrived. You can still see smoldering, skeletal remains of the dead…..”

Joanna Wilson

This isn’t on apple podcasts :((

augtober

The music and tone throughout struck my Firefly heartstrings. Not excited to see how Mr. Hollow cuts them. Also, at the mention of luck spilling out of a bag, every Call of Cthulhu player near a podcast screamed.

Bean Planter

This was a balm to my heart even though I know it's gonna be used against us in the long run huh 🥲🥲

Han Divine

The mineshaft scene took me back to being a child and hearing ghost stories in the Rockies. You all are incredible!!

Viv

Visceral whiplash going from describing a horrific bone break to the line “At the dance hall?” This is what WBN delivers and I’m here for it thank you

DaphneDawn

Technical question: I'm planning on discontinuing my Spotify soon. When do the uploads get to YouTube? Or is there another podcast service that's recommended?

Tommy Deibel

You only have one skill, it's Railway Bureaucracy, you have a +2. The characters that Lou can make work!

Eric Stokien

Not-Pinkertons is my bet

Gen and Jeff Brainerd

This setting might have been my favorite so far. Absolutely incredible

Gen and Jeff Brainerd

The soundscape??? the music??? the tap-tap-taps aligning???? By god they’ve done it again 🤩

annemjw

Yes, the gun referenced when Aabria’s character was protecting their mule from the starving dogs was described as Rhuvian! Something about fire magic discs as ammo?

Chelsie K

One of my favorite Tom Waits songs is Town With No Cheer and this hit all the same spots. Stark beauty, pain, and emptiness in a truly nostalgic mirage. Such evocative world building, and this had the best of the bittersweet endings.

Paul Gude

lol, Brennan was like “at its height, this was a big town, now it’s a small town living in the husk of what was, inside the husk of what was hoped. The population is maybe 1000 people.” And I’m sitting here thinking about where I grew up that has had a population ~500 for the last 15 years

rio

From what I understand, this is the general region they travel to at the end of Book 1, where they will be looking for the Antivili.

Oh cool an interlude! I can’t wait to experience the war crime that happens here a couple years from now.

Matthew Grossman

This was unbelievably fire! Did anyone catch any clues as to when this is set in relation to WWW? Also, I don’t know how much (if any) coordination there is between all these things, but it was extra lovely to get this on a week where I’ll surely be going through withdrawal (/j) because there’s no D20 or C4 dropping lmao

KamasiFitzgerald

For what has been, so far, a very gender-equal book why are only the men conscripted for the Empire? Is Millie going to be Fortune Fields’ Rosie the Riveter AND Rose Kennedy?

CarpeBootium

Lucky said “no loose ends”

CarpeBootium

PS: Lou’s scream during the — er — procedure— was 👌👌👌

Cackle Cackle

Hang in there! It’s rough times out here but you’re not alone. Sending love and an ahoohoo.

Cackle Cackle

Eeeeeeeeeeee this was sooo good! I made a D&D sepsis simulation for the nurses at my hospital to help them practice advocating for their patients, and the scene where Harry had to make quick decisions about how to treat a necrotizing wound was MY JAAAAM. I honestly might use the death-saving-throws-while-alive idea because it perfectly fits that sense of, “We have to make the right decision, right now,” that comes into play with these cases. Woooo you made this nerd so happy! ☺️

Cackle Cackle

I’m upset with how amazing and beautiful this music is only because I have to wait to listen to it on its own 😭😭 it’s so GOOD

Conrad

“A place that is holding on with white knuckles at the very edge of oblivion” made me pause and stare off into middle distance for a solid 2 minutes

Alyssa

I brayed. That was good

Alyssa

the fox would make an excellent little bank robber

Shannon Ho

Oh nooooo I did not make this connection!

Claudia

Now plastic canonically exists in Umora thanks Aabria!

flower

THE SCORE! It's perfect and I love it so much

TPK_light

YESSSSSSS

Mal

Truly an honor to watch Brennan prime ammunition in real time

The Wizard Saccharine

Oh man, I love the implications of a steam train in a world with wizard constructs. What does it say about a society that goes tonsuch legths to avoid wizard craft like this? I hope they do something with this. Kinda fits well with the zeitgeist of a ton of technology alienating people.

Leo Burn'd

I can’t wait for this to deal emotional damage to me at a surprise point in the next few years!

The Wizard Spring

Middle East meets old west…I love feeling representation that doesn’t feel stereotypical or over the top or in your face. Thank you for this.

Cole Sarar

The music!!!!! The twang!!! The bouncing golden luck!

Emily C

I SEE IT! An exasperated lil guy

Melissa Shilale

Idk why but the Man in Black having a rustic country twang, when we now know Umora canonically has a Frontier Adventure(TM) area of the park, is very funny.

Brandon Carbaugh

Hoooo boy that vein of silver. We know that Lucent Court needs quicksilver, and that their supply in the Shroud Mountains has dried up thanks to Eioghorain's efforts. I'm very curious to see how Fortune's Fields fares in Book Two.

bluebluebutton

yes!! in the free roads!!!

zkbeeblebrox

So good!

Andrew Stallworth

Is this set in Umora?

Paulina Haddad

A shame the papier mache themepark didn't get to be worked into the narrative somehow.

Coolclaytony

I want Gallows to bury Hollow alive. That yellow belly rubs me the wrong way.

Coolclaytony

Love this. Starting to hate the Interlude to damaged leg without trigger warning ratio

Muadwho

Is this Sedona?

Alex Vasquez

Cool! Fun to see Taylor building the team and giving Jared more, can’t wait to hear Nic’s score!

Phoenix Vizva’i

the people need to see millie and fahad as militant miners union reps

Violet McDonald

If at some point someone says "Fortune favors the bold" I'll do a backflip

Brendan

We’ve all been traumatized

Erin

I just started to listen to it, and my only concern is: Will this be used against us, like Twelve Brooks

Franco Muscellini

So if The Free Roads are sort of an Old West era analog for Umorra, I can see the WWW trio getting involved in a good, old-fashioned train heist at some point. Another amazing interlude! I can't wait to see how this dusty town returns in Book Two.

Amellabeth

Another absolutely gorgeous musical score! I really love the vibe of the town and it’s going to be so interesting to see the gang in the Free Roads.

Erin

That was my favorite interlude yet! I want to learn so much more about that town and all that goes on, terrifying grandpa or no

JoelleDFTBA

Also I wanna see Hollow and will Gallows go at it

VforVenlee

Oaky reminds me of Mickey Rooney's character in Phantom of the Megaplex

VforVenlee

Brought to us by Fortunate Horse and Unfortunate Mule

SvenTS

Damn that guitar riff for fortune's fields reminded me of Tristram from Diablo 1.

Claytron

What up Brennan, setting up some lovable locations and characters that you can destroy in Book 2 to punch us all in the gut?

Gal

Just want to say iv been going thru alot lately and havent been able to keep up with my favorite shows or podcasts but seeing new content from yall really does warm my heart and helps bring that motivation back. Also congratulations on the release of an amazing game erika!
