PCs are a trio of friends who deeply love and genuine love one another and they were not in each other’s lives for a big part of their lives so the clunky and tension of communication and needs feels just RIGHT! Which is the fascinating aspect of this campaign to me is that the understanding each other’s full characters will only get smoother and revealing of one another!

The Cold War is certainly the most recent dramatic example of a security dilemma but ofc perhaps the most classic example is Troy and Athens! And while I’m sure both powers would love a Troy like end of the opposing power, currently they seem much to evenly matched to find that or anything but violence any time soon unlesss ofc… they take a page out of the cold wars book and engage in an arms race eventually leading to a weapon so devestating, its use would result in mutually assured destruction, and thus end the bi-hegemonic cycle of constant conflict as a result of resolved understanding that the only way to win would destroy them both. This world and tale(s) that y’all are weaving is so damn wonderous and yet also still largely unexplored but nonetheless still clearly and constantly deeply magically world where the two competing global powers have (seemingly) always been a bit of an arms race but have recently, as a result of the recent security dilemma, began to fully engage. As is such, this feels like it would be sucu an awesome setting in which to run an innovation and dogged academic curiousity and passion (+ some general Nationalism energy lol) fueled magical arms race up to the creation and or use of something wizards prolly shouldn’t be touching to create a magical nuke equivalent .

The world power-dynamic Brennan was describing of the war spinning up again being connected to uncertainty of what is Galthimae is doing and the notion that “anything they do that advances power is a threat”is pretty much exactly what in international relations/international political theory is known as “a security dilemma” and is why the argument that a bi-hegemonic international or regional system is the most unstable (think the Cold War but also Greek city states ). Ofc that line of thought tends to come up in Realist IR ideology (for ref: Machiavelli is arguably the most well known proponent of a form of realist theory) which is no longer the dominating global ideology but I think makes a lot of sense as the driving understanding of the great imperial powers of this world! My parting note is that actively acting on an understanding that the unaleivable truth of IR is that the only thing nations care about is power and that power is a zero sum game, can absolutely be a self fulfilling prophecy and it’s fascinating to watch that play out between two (fictional) large and powerful competing forces-unable to stop until one of them has a Troy-like fall! A very fun setting for ame, suvi, and Eursulons magical adventures and journeys of growth to unfold if you ask me!
