I appreciate the nuance you guys bring to The Discourse.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be “outraged” by an ad that flirts with white supremacy, even is it’s not ideologically minded white supremacy, just monetarily minded.

Eddie

I love you guys but these are some crap takes on gen AI. I am an artist who has had their work stolen by these companies and have many colleagues in the same boat. Yes, the fault lies largely at the corporate level. But there is a LOT of damage being done at the individual level. I instantly block anyone using gen AI. AI “artists” flood the market with their slop and directly take money out of artists’ pockets. Places like Etsy and art fairs are slowly being infiltrated. Where once an individual or small company would have commissioned an artist for an illustration, they now use gen AI. They use our work and sell it to other people at a fraction of the price we would have received selling it ourselves. The example cited of “what if there was a machine that generated one image using all the art in the world and then the machine was destroyed” is a really unfair one to ask, especially in a room of people whose work is not being exploited. Even in a non capitalistic world, a creator should always be given agency over their work, even if money isn’t involved. I hope you will speak to more creatives about this because we are at the center of the harm caused by gen AI. And it’s why we chant “fuck gen AI”.

I get where you are coming from but I also think you are making a lot of unnecessary hard assumptions about them just from this short segment. There's zero indication that they "don't care" about certain disorders or actively exclude them from their activism. They simply could've been unaware or didn't think or know it would affect someone. All they need is a short "Hey, Jsyk this kind of thing could require a warning for some people" instead of an accusatory complaint.

It's also come out that Sydney Sweeney is a registered republican and by all accounts voted for Trump in the 2024 election, which IMO is a much bigger point of contention than American Eagle doing this eugenics bs in their ads, which is stupid YES, but of course an American company is cool with doing Nazi shit while Nazis are running rampant. Yeah, we can expect that any Hollywood actor is probably vapid/conservative, but for her being on a goddamn show with a prominent trans character (and probably the most famous trans actor right now), and doing all this queerbaity stuff in photoshoots and movies (and playing a lesbian on that one Netflix show), it just really pisses me off that she's voting for a dude who wants to eradicate trans and gay people, while making money off of queer culture essentially. Fuck her for this.

It was only a few weeks but it feels so weird to have Jordan back. It's like he was gone for years

You can do “-ai” in your search bars to get rid of the AI summary 💖

Ehhh, the AI takes are kinda ehh...

on the topic of sydney sweeney, i think if there wasn’t a rise of white supremacy and this ad was the craziest ‘stance’ someone/company has made, id be more enraged, but bc there are people online open and honestly promoting eugenics, im kind of like “oh, that’s gross, i will continue not shopping there” and that’s it.

AI has in fact become so pervasive in North American culture specifically in the business sector. It's used a beacon of hope for capitalistic endeavors. Large corporations like Walmart and Amazon are using AI to enhance customer shopping experience.
