We are more likely to assume that people are just having a conversation about their own beliefs, and don't expect a podcast to be scripted. So I think that definitely plays into it---people think it's more real, and that makes the objectionable thing they say more objectionable. If the audience knows the person is trolling, people are less likely to respond. If they audience thinks this is someone being candid, it's more likely to generate outrage.
