2023-07-10 22:49:38 +0000 UTCso, 1: pretty privilege is definitely Mostly a gendered thing, like, it Can be applied to [people whomst are Not broadly perceived by cis society as women] but at that point it starts to lose a lot of its meaning but, 2: that's almost certainly not why the person rolled their eyes, dogs don't have gender, i think they heard you making a joke about pretty privilege and assumed you were making fun of the concept; that is what i would assume if a stranger made that joke to me, anyway. it's definitely one of those facets of misogyny that edgy dudes like to mock/people in general like to make light of for no reason but also, 3: it was funny don't worry too much about it lol

I personally think it's better to name the tool you're talking about, since it's so specific. Midjourney and ChatGPT have horrible ethical issues that should totally get discussed and universally rejected. But like, NPC AI in a game is a totally other tech haha.

2023-07-08 15:02:36 +0000 UTCpretty privilege is one of those things that aren't technically gendered, but it mostly only gets used for one side of the gendered spectrum (bc yay misogyny). i feel like its just a matter of the fact that the most commonly used unironic version of the word is to invalidate a woman's success or achievements, which is probably a big factor in her rolling her eyes. in her mind she was probably turned off of it because of the assumption that if you EVER use the term, you may have a tendency towards the common misogynistic traits that usually come along with it being used. its weird how friendly fire can happen upon the basis of a very nuanced misunderstanding like that

Genders besides women can be pretty and therefore can have pretty privilege, but if someone only thinks of women as pretty, that might limit their perception.
