23 File Structure, Takes and Tokens

It can't be all just lighting, materials and animation right? I get questions about how I structure my folders for commercial projects and how I integrate takes and tokens to work smart and not hard.

So I thought it would be good to share this video which is more on the "admin" side of things but definitely something important to know and apply to your workflow.

Thank you Joel! And you are absolutely right. Having the good habit of organizing as you go is essential into working smart. But you'd be surprised, I've received files from Creative Directors and Art Directors that are just such a mess...and this is from people that should be setting the example...its crazy out there!

Hey Jesus, thank you so much for this! The organization segment you bring up is really important. As a junior/ mid artist, I've seen a lot of projects (especially on tight deadlines for some reason) where there's tons of lights not named, materials not in layers or just really sloppy hierarchy. I'm trying to learn to be better about this as it is key to not being up until 2am, ha.

Would love to hear more of your workflow using anchorpoint. I find it works great on solo projects but I'm having a harder time integrating it into studioworkflows. Why do you keep template projects in your folder structure if your new.c4d is set up?

Thomas Collier

if you render multiple times a day that's definitely useful. I tend to not do that since most of the times renders are done overnight. And If im doing hardware previews I usually just overwrite them. I render, bring into AE, go back to C4D to make updates and overwrite. The thing with rendering with different folders for time (to me) is that if you want to go back to a specific version of the file at that point in time is hard. Unless you use the time stamp to revert the file using dropbox or something like that, but that's just my process.

Thanks Brandon! It's called Anchorpoint. I'm trying it out currently, seems pretty sturdy. https://www.anchorpoint.app

Thank you for the feedback Felipe, glad you enjoyed it!

Jesus Suarez

Yes this is something I have on my list and will probably do in the future!

I add one more layer to my tokens by adding date/time that way I can render and re render the same scene without versioning up file each time. But that is more for animation

Very informative. I am looking to possbile make the switch to PC soon. What is the app you are using for folder structure on PC it looks different from normal windows I see people use.

Another type of video that would be awesome to watch is about business practice. I'm refering to pricing, sales, onboarding, project management, customer support, customer service.
