Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4, is a highly prevalent, saliva-transmissible virus that establishes a lifelong latent infection in more than 90% of the global population. Although often asymptomatic upon initial infection, EBV has been implicated in a wide range of diseases and complications, some of which can be severe or even life-threatening. Besides infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as βmonoβ or the βkissing disease,β EBV is associated with several malignancies, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Burkitt lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma. EBV is also linked to gastric carcinoma, a type of stomach cancer, and certain autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and rheumatoid arthritis.
