Do you remember my last post? About the mysterious disappearance of the legendary herb "Adderall" from my local apothecary? To my surprise, not only was I lucky enough to get a refill, but I've been switched to a different, two dose version that's treating me a lot better. The downtime between doses allows me to continue the brainstorming and self-care I began while on the wrong medication, before the second dose returns me to a focused state. This also allows me to switch what I'm working on mid-day, something I genuinely struggled with otherwise. I can also take proper breaks! And naps! I used to do that all time as a baby!! Baby me was ON to something...

LESS WORK WAS DONE ON IT THAN I WANTED! Directly, at least. Much of my focus was planning, writing, and experimentation. Particular focus was identifying and removing everything that was slowing or complicating development, and minimizing its impact if it had to stay. I still don't have an exact answer for everything yet, but after a quick survey in the Discord server, it seems nobody's particularly attached to the parts most likely to change. Most of them wanna kiss Rally. I get it. He was born to be kissed.
As mentioned in the previous post, one of these scope reductions was the character creator. Doing this turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made, as being able to animate the player character with a fraction of the old restrictions has been an absolute delight. It's very difficult to explain exactly what made the old system difficult to work with — I guess you could say it's like having to build multiple cars with different chassis, but certain parts need to be in the exact same spot for some reason, and you can't work on the engine with the lights one, and also if you need to make an adjustment you need to adjust all cars the exact same way or one might disappear when it turns right and another might have its headlights shrink when it drifts. Does that make sense? ....No, of course it doesn't. Why did I explain it that way?
Anyway all I need to worry about now is making sure the head is on top of the body and it's soooo nice to do it

Speaking of the player character, a very specific focus during this last month was HUMANS. One of my primary goals in Rainshade was to minimize the dissonance between the player and their avatar. Many of the settings I've played with have minimal to no human presence, but it turns out more than a few people have an easier time identifying with a character if they're the same species as them. Uh oh! So I made the decision to include humans.
Unfortunately I felt like most of the human designs looked bad, either too bland or too detailed. So I drew a lot of humans in different ways! And I still wasn't satisfied! They needed FUN SHAPES!! Eventually I started taking inspiration from human-adjacent characters, such as the Inklings and Octolings from Splatoon, and I'm a lot happier with the result. Maybe they're not exactly human anymore, but human enough!

By the way, when I was playing Anarchy Open in Splatoon 3 with a friend, we encountered a player using the name of a character from a game I've been helping him make. I think we won. Maybe? I don't remember. All I remember was my friend and how his ass got kicked.
Excited for what's to come! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(Also, if you're subscribed to the Undertale/Deltarune news letter at a brave enough tier, you'll get the teeniest, tiniest glimpses into what else I've been busy with! I strongly recommend the TRUCK FREAK tier because that's what I picked and I don't want to look like I'm weird for doing that)
