To Leah, something had always felt wrong with life. Society was a machine. People were trained to perfect a trade, a craft or a field of study. But there was no trade for those who were simply kind and loving, or enjoyed being a centre of comfort to others.

While studying this preference to fulfil emotional roles above productive roles, Leah stumbled on the growing Adapts movement. Being sanctioned to live life as an emotional caretaker could create a dynamic that met a partner’s emotional needs as well as those of the Adapted.

Inspired, but facing a downward spiral of agoraphobia and depression after the disappearance of her older half-sister, Leah felt her calling was to enact this type of strong, emotional, but platonic bond. Without a prospective partner, however, she had to negotiate with her family to sponsor and support her Adaption.

Waking up without limbs suddenly felt like a mistake. But the ’market’ for those already Adapted was lively and Leah was soon in contact with Talia, a legal expert busy advocating for a new kind of partnership that would formalise this nurturing Adapt/Human lifestyle.

Their relationship moved quickly, as Leah became devoted to and fully immersed in her new role of being the emotional support that Talia craved. She still felt pangs of regret at becoming so physically dependent, but finally happy; literally and metaphorically living as her new mistress’s... PILLOW.
