I've thought Sam and Frodo are a wonderful representation of non-sexual intimacy between men. I think we are quick in the world to assume that men who are affectionate with one another must be in a sexual relationship and there isn't room for platonic affection. Christ's peace be with you!

2024-07-06 22:20:14 +0000 UTCI have always loved the META commentary imbued in Sam's speech when he is talking about the great stories, the ones that really mattered: "Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why." In my mind, that is a perfect summation of how I felt after reading The Lord of the Rings for the first time.

2022-09-04 16:27:22 +0000 UTCI love this trilogy! I think, ultimately, I'm still a Star Wars fan first, maybe partly due to nostalgia, but man oh man, Tolkien/Jackson is just another level. It's a more mature story. Theodon mourning his son at his grave, saying “no father should have to bury his child,” and weeping uncontrollably is a good piece of acting. It’s so sad and a great picture of the pain and loss caused by war. This is the king. And he can’t stop crying. “If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.” A great quote. Has anyone told you yet that in the beginning when Aragorn kicks the Orc’s helmet, the actor actually broke his toe? That’s partly why his scream is so believable. One of the cool tidbits of the trilogy. Sam's speech at the end is probably my favorite in the trilogy, and there are some good ones! I have to admit, I tear up a little every time I hear it. Sean Astin's delivery is top-notch! Also, as Tolkien and CS Lewis were good friends, Treebeard’s deep voice and mannerisms are based on CS Lewis! I had more thoughts, but I managed to whittle them down to a handful 😂
