This was the episode that 100% sold me on the show when I first watched it. The idea of having a character that experienced the same trauma as everyone else but because of his past it's actually what saved him... brilliant concept that continually delivers. Such a swell of emotion at the end to see how desperate he was before, and now how at peace he is seeing his wheelchair. Kudos to you for catching so much early on, especially clocking his ex-disability. You might end up putting this mystery show to shame by solving all the reveals ahead of time 😂

I know I mentioned it last group of posts but the way the score kicks in from 40:15 to the end of the episode is so freaking peak

Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around
If wishes were trees, the trees would be falling
Listen to reason
Season is calling
I love this episode. I won’t go into the details, but it meant a great deal to me personally when I first watched it at 14.
Terry O’Quinn, who played John Locke, is just dynamite in this episode. In this episode he’s both the rugged hunter of the wilds and a meek, bullied man and neither incarnation of Locke feels totally separate from the other. You see the quiet ferocity simmering within him during his flashbacks, and you see that reckless desperation in the present day. He’s powerful and pitiable in equal measure, and that scene at the end never fails to make me tear up. Life just isn’t fair sometimes.
You guessed the wheelchair thing so early on! That twist was a huge shock at the time and after the pilot hooked audiences, this episode is what kept them.
As for Shannon, who’s to say she’s wrong with how she catches a fish? Maybe she’s like Sawyer: in the wild, and doing whatever underhanded thing needs doing to survive on their own terms. Or she’s just a brat. Either way, I do sort of love her.

I also want to say that I would make as many notes as possible because this is the kind of show where rewatching it makes you realise how many connections there are to later seasons

The colonel thing was just role-playing. It was probably Lockes fantasy to have some authority seeing as he had none in his real life

You are only the second reactor that I have watched who immediately recognized that Locke was paralyzed. I'm impressed!
When I watched it the first time I didn't get it at all. When it was finally revealed I was mindblown. A really fantastic episode which also introduced the "magic entity" of the island ... question mark? maybe? I mean, this is just your typical survival show, right?
Also, fantastic conspiracy theories! Love them! 😂
