Kate’s flashbacks explain how she got caught in Australia, and reinforce what we know about her: she’s a fugitive, but seemingly with a heart of gold who will help others before herself when the chips are down. We saw it when she helped the Marshal with his mask on the plane, and we see it again with farmer Ray Mullen. I do like that there is some measure of ambiguity as to Kate’s motives in putting down the Marshal. Is it out of genuine mercy, or pragmatism so she can keep her secret? I think it’s both, and Kate seems to be wrestling with which one of them is the deeper motivator. Also one of my favourite moments is Locke locating Vincent, then letting Michael take the credit. A sweet, selfless act. The Marshal is played by Fredric Lehne, who previously played the evil rancher Rance Burgess in the Firefly episode “Heart of Gold”.

2026-01-14 17:20:12 +0000 UTCA good first episode after the pilot. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but aside from the name “Annie” the episode includes another reference to Buffy. It’s called “Tabula Rasa” which should be familiar to you, since the episode following the musical in Buffy is also titled “Tabula Rasa”. The phrase means “clean slate” and in both episodes the main characters are forced to start over after a major fallout and a profound change in their lives. The reason Jack doesn’t want to know “what Kate did” is precisely because of this idea of tabula rasa: for everyone, the island represents a new chapter. What they did before no longer matters, only "what Kate does" from now on. PS: Charlie wrote "Fate" on his fingers, not "Late".
