I'm curious about your reaction to next episode

I feel like the candle cove creepy pasta was heavily inspired by this episode . Easily on of my favorite episodes of angel perfect combination of fun and creepy

So interesting!! I’d always thought Smile Time was universally loved. Is there anything specific you don’t like about it, the story or the placement in season? I have the same sentiment towards the Spin The Bottle episode which just feels like a Tabula Rasa rerun

Re men not getting the signals: True for me, too. Bringing it up made me think of Taylor Swift's "Exile" (I know you're a Swiftie, so I bet you did, too), her duet with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon from Folklore. Throughout, whenever he sings "You never gave a warning sign," she responds with "I gave so many signs."

In terms of deeper meaning to the whole puppet plot thing, you may recall that throughout this whole season people have been calling Angel (and the gang, but mostly Angel) a puppet. Spike has called Angel a puppet (probably more than once), Wesley's robot not-a-father also said Angel has always been a puppet -- to the Powers That Be, to Wolfram and Hart, and that their organization would make him their puppet too. And Lindsey in "You're Welcome" told Angel to his face that he went from being a champion to [the proverbial] corporate puppet. Even others, while not calling him a puppet, have implied it in their conversations with him, like how Cordy was trying to warn him about this. And then........he becomes a literal puppet in this episode! Guess we'll see how this experience changes his outlook on the whole W&H gig...

I love how exact the satire of children's television is, especially the one muppet/demon who wants to make good "edu-tainment." And I just discovered a connection: Joss Whedon's father Tom worked for years in children's television, starting out as a writer on Captain Kangaroo in the 1950's, then winning an Emmy in the 1970's as writer/producer of The Electric Company. Joss, born in 1964, would have been just the age to have been watching it.

Sorry…..my Least favorite episode. Ugh!!. Aside from that, this is the “Him” episode of Angel’s final season. 8 left and then…don’t know what I’ll do next. 😕

Speaking as a male of the species, I'll personally confirm that we can be woefully oblivious when it comes to detecting romantic signals directed at us by women. Btw, Gregor the puppeteer was played by David Fury, who was the mustard guy in "Once More, With Feeling". Fury also wrote & produced dozens of Buffy and Angel episodes, as well as multiple episodes of 24 and Lost. Gotta give the dude credit, he's quite a prolific talent.

I have missed blatant signals like you would not believe. I've missed signals SO LOUD that if I were on TV you'd change the channel because you couldn't believe somebody could be THAT oblivious. Oh yeah, it's true. Such a FUN episode. I spend so much time laughing at the setpieces. I think the thing to really focus on with Gunn is that he originally refused to make a deal with the demon doctor...but when pressed, he caved and made the deal anyway. We don't know what's the deal was really for -- all he said was that it was an item that he hoped to make money on -- but just the fact that it's something that this monster wants should be enough to tell Gunn that it's a bad idea. The characters have been talking all season long about the risk of W&H changing them at their core, and it looks like Gunn may have been the first one to succumb.

Angel's reaction to the self-esteem song is really heartbreaking; as a human Liam didn't know how to impress his father and thought he wasn't really good enough to do anything but drink and sleep around; as a vampire Angelus did everything to be evil because it would mean that he was something; and as the vampire with a soul, Angel felt that he could never be anything more than the guy brooding in a corner with the blood habit and the 200 hundred years of psychic baggage.

James Smith

One of the creepiest, but most hilarious episodes of Angel. Love the Spike and puppet Angel fight!
