"The Train Job"

Firefly: 1x2 Full Reaction

Mal will steal from the Alliance but not people on the terraform worlds because they are struggling with little or no help. The actor one of the blue hand guys at the end the one with black hair and high hairlines was in Buffy and Angel he was with the Watcher hit team that went after Faith , Joss likes to cast actors he’s worked with, that’s why he cast Nathan Fillion as Caleb in season 7 of Buffy

Michael Matthews

if you watch the very last frame/scene you can see something that a lot of first timers miss lol

I love this episode. I didn't watch Firefly when it originally aired. I watched it like two years after. I enjoyed the first episode, but it was The Train Job that hooked me. I am still angry that Fox did the show so dirty. We deserve more Firefly.

I'm a little disappointed she didn't realize the reveal in the last scene. We already know what it is now. They don't keep that lede buried for very long.

I like the Sheriff character, previously seen in 'Slither' as the foul-mouthed mayor alongside Nathan Fillion. He seems like the best version of what Mal could become as an older man, since he seems to carry the aura that he may have been a criminal of some stripe before becoming a sheriff of this little town. He's cunning yet good-hearted, like Mal.

The first few "previously on"s fill in some worldbuilding info that catches you into the action. After that, however, they do get spoilery at times. I know you said your preferred attitude is to experience the show like we did, but at least you're aware of this now. But if you really want to play along like we did at home, here was the original weekly airing order: 1x02 1x03 1x06 MLB playoff skip 1x07 1x08 1x04 1x05 1x09 production week skip production/thanksgiving skip 1x10 1x14 1x01 (with 1x11, 1x12, 1x13 not airing, but being released on DVD)

Fox didn't like 'Serenity', ie. the 90min pilot so Joss and Tim literally wrote this over a weekend as a replacement. For an episode written in 48 hrs it's pretty good!

The window is also a meta joke about fight scenes in western movies typically involving someone getting thrown through a window. Breaking stunt glass was a cheap way to highlight the action even if it would have been expensive to replace the glass irl in the west.

we love a tiffany lamp :))

Frelle

now i really want River to start shooting blue lasers 😄

Frelle

You make some great observations, like how cool Niska's lamp is.

Thank you for getting this filmed and posted today with everything you have on your plate. It’s very much appreciated. I love the hologram window in the bar at the beginning. Not only is it fun way to show the level of technology, but it gives me the impression that a lot of people get thrown through it and the owners don’t want to constantly pay to repair it.

The background skies with big planets are probably unrealistic but give us the impression that the solar system they are in has a denser population of planets (also the outer rim is likely larger planets with many moons. Maybe rewatch that last scene, I think you missed something about those two guys that are looking for River.

The Testimony of Mushroom

I believe you'll find that the show only gets better from here... One small thing, there is a strong possibility that River is speaking literally about "...two by two, hands of blue..." Please go on with the theories and let's see where they go.

I forgot that the episodes on Hulu included the little worldbuilding recap at the start. That was another consequence of Fox's episode-order shuffling, and was added to the original airing. The episodes on DVD don't include them. "Joe Bloggs" is a 'placeholder' name in real life (Primarily in British English). It's used to refer to a generic, average person. We can assume Niska gave them the name when setting up the job in case they were questioned along the way. You don't need to work trying to figure out what "Two by two, hands of blue" means, they answered it at the end of the episode. Those two men who showed up with River's picture were wearing blue gloves (Two of them, with blue hands). We don't know who they are or why they wear blue gloves or What It All Means, but they showed it right away. River is saying that they're going to be coming after her.

Yeah this was the first episode to air on tv, it was written as a faster paced, more action heavy alternative to the pilot episode because that is what FOX thought would be better recieved. Also, the armor worn by the Alliance soldiers are the same uniform costuming that was used for the film 'Starship Troopers' (1997).

James Smith

I crushed pretty hard on Summer Glaus. She’s no Sarah Michelle but her and Amy Acker are my other Buffyverse favorites

I honestly thought the train job was episode 1. I dove pretty deep into Buffy but I only watched Firefly a couple of times. I enjoyed it but I never watched the behind the scenes stuff. I guess we’ll learn some things together!
