Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 3x11 Full Reaction

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 3x11 Full Reaction

Buffy has dealt with a situation where the villain was a human before. Remember Billy, from Nightmares, in Season One? The bad guy was his little league coach, Buffy helped Billy come out of his coma and the coach ended up in jail where he belongs.

Yes, this was an entertaining and slightly bizarre episode, with a little different twist on the powers of the demon of the week. Maybe a little unsettling in the middle, with all the bigotry, book burning, persecution of anyone deemed different, and the general cult like mentality of the mob, but it picks up in the last act with a really fun ending. Nothing of any major consequence in this episode, probably the biggest thing was getting Amy back … well, at least until she turned into a rat. Again, on all “the slayer doesn't kill humans” thing, I would call it more a declaration of intent, or a suggestion, than an actual rule. Buffy has already killed, more or less directly, quite a few humans at this point, all bad guys (or gals) of course but human nontheless. Could I imagine Buffy going after some bad guy with the clear goal of killing him? No, but more because it's not in her character than because of some rule. Of course, if during the confrontation, and the ensuing fight, this bad guy were to be killed … well, it wouldn't be the first time, and no one seems to have ever had a problem with it until now.

Everyone memory holes Xander/Cordy as soon as he had the thing with Willow. But Willow and Xander grew up together as best friends since they were real young. Of course they have feelings, but teenagers are confused and hormonal and their bodies are blossoming into sexual beings, and all that. But Cordy and Xander were having epic makeout sessions (and maybe some heavy petting) and that believe me programs a boy's brain as to how to deal with relationships -- and there is Willow the one he really cares for, and she isn't saying no -> big whoopsies with the kissy face. Now he feels bad -- and is in this big guilt trip, that no one is explaining to him is just regular teenage stuff, because I guess regular stuff at home leads to violence, recriminations, having to sleep outside, etc. Things are better now, tho with him and Oz. They exchange chilly words but the anger is dissipated. That's why Xander is so guilty, he is imposing it on himself because he is not getting it from the gang anymore. They team up to save Willow and Buffy, and drop all the tension to go into battle. Actions speak louder than words, I guess. Cordy comes through with Giles -- with the best line ever, too. Principle Snyder is a Villain? or not? or what? Very interesting gray character -- he is like an obstacle to the scooby gang, but is he evil? A mystery as to why he would be in school administration at all, around children he really hates -- in Band Candy he was amazingly comedic, and here he is amazingly infuriating and such a petty dictator. Giles has had enough of his crap, tho., that's for certain. This season has a lot of "authority is terrible and incompetent to the point of destroying every good thing it is supposed to be preserving" themes -- and that is good. Joyce is the embodiment of misplaced do-gooder intentions in this episode. This is a real slam at the "Moral Majority" by the writers against real groups of moms and religious people trying to demonize Hollywood, and probably this show in particular, given the subject matter. Joss Whedon himself talks about how he has no time for "The Big Bully in the Sky", and all the skeezy things people do in the name of religious righteousness, and all that. Moral panics are real and people destroy lives in the real world. Look up "Satanic Panic" on Wikipedia and you will see this kind of lynch mob is not that far off. The fairy tale monster stories in BTVS are actually really good. "Der Kinderstod" in season 2x18 "Killed By Death" was creepy as hell. Pete in season 3x4 "Beauty and the Beasts" is both a beauty and the beast reversal and a "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" story, with Angel&Buffy really doing the "Bell & Prince Adam (the beast)" thing as well. This one "Gingerbread" with "Hans and Gretta Strauss" (Hansel & Gretel, of course) was great as well. One of the big themes is that trying to be "a good girl" in the eyes of others gets you nowhere. I think Buffy knows this, but even so it is so hard to tell your mom she is full of it. Willow found that out the hard way. Oz's name is actually Daniel Osborne. He is a Danny. No don't call him that he might come after you next full moon. Also, Buffy got turned into a rat in 2x16 "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" , by Amy. And Oz punched Xander in the face for not sleeping with Willow the night before (love spell backfiring by Xander), and making Willow cry on the phone all night to him. My how things have turned around.
