The thing with Lily/Chanterelle/SisterSunshine/Anne is that whatever her identity was before running away from home, it's clearly associated with deep trauma. The fact that she didn't even pick the name Lily for herself (Ricky did), but chose *become* Anne (Becoming part 3?) I think shows growth.

This one was a great and strong opening for a season, probably one of the best if not the best of the entire series. Story aside, they clearly decided to go strong on the cinematography and I really like it. You already noticed the long uncut sequence with all the characters, included Larry, entering the frame, leaving it, and rentering it again, and it worked great to reintroduce us to all the school dynamic, the relationships, etc. . A little more subtle but still effective, between the Sunnydale's scenes and the Buffy's there are clearly differences in how the scenes are framed, in the use of the lighting, and even the colour saturation. Even if you didn't notice it, your brain did, so giving you a different feeling in the two different storylines. If we really want to find a problem in this episode, it would be how Buffy, from being completely detached at the beginning, decides to return home at the end, practically in the space of a day or so. Yes, this change feels a little rushed but I honestly don't believe that was feasible going on with two different storylines for more than an episode, the show relays on the interaction between all the characters. Even if this is probably, as I said, one of the best season opening for a season, the third season it's definitely not one of my favourite. Don't take me wrong, it has some great episodes, absolutely, but that's it, I enjoy more rewatching specific episodes rather than the season as a whole. Let me try to explain myself, without saying a word about the story of course. If I look back at the second season I can see a cohesive narrative arc for the characters, most of them at least, running through the entire season. Watching back to the third one instead I feel a lack of a similar cohesion, they play around with different ideas but without a solid main theme, at least for the first part of the season. It's like, and this is just me of course, that they realized that they had gone very far with Buffy's growth during the previous season and so they decided to pull the handbrake, after all we are still in the high school period, and limit themselves to tinker around the edges. Now, probably you wouldn't notice this watching one episode at the time for the first time, it's normal, as I said is something that I noticed only at the end watching back to the entire season, or maybe it's just something that it's a problem just for me, absolutely possible, but anyway as I said there are some really objectively great episodes so I'm sure you'll enjoy this season.
