Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 2x7 Full Reaction

Comments

Reacting to comments definitely adds to the reaction, as your comments are always intelligently thought out and interesting to listen to. Also please don't worry about comments, and please don't worry about missing things, we all watched the show once, i've never subscribed to anyone's patreon before, but your insightful comments about the show and Lana Del Rey lyrics just compelled to subscribe to yours so i could watch Buffy again with you, i haven't watched the show in more than 10 years so it will good to watch along.

David Allan

Buffy taken out of context: Giles thinks Ford is cute.

Tim Pierce

Great reaction! I think everyone has covered any questions you had in the previous comments. So I’ll just say, keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing a great job. Also, I can’t speak for others, but I would much rather a reactor pause often, than end up talking over something important!

Teresa Schultz

Also, an interesting bit about spike, he did keep his word, even though he could have just killed Ford. I find it interesting because in tune with the episode theme, spike is not a black and white character, and in my eyes this adds even more layers to him. And I think the show is adapting to buffy and the others characters growth and becoming slowly more mature, even down to its villains, where last season you had the master who’s pretty much a cartoon character, now we have more interesting and complex villains.

Marty

I agree with you when you said that often in shows they have drama just for drama sake. Anyway, in the scene with Buffy and Angel at the Bronze, I don't see a forced miscommunication situation to create drama, but more a classic case in which the woman ask the man a question to which she already knows the answer perfectly just to test him, and Angel, like a typical man. falls head over heels for it, at which point everything more he says only serves to dig himself deeper and deeper in a hole. Interesting point: Spike named Anne Rice in the third episode, we saw that there are vampire movies, and later in the series they will make a joke about sparkling vampires, a clear reference to Twilight (the book not the movie obviously), so we can assume that the romanticized idea of vampires among the general public in this universe is the same as that in our universe.

G.Un.

And I'm a Season 4 unicorn.

Ross43

Episode 7's are usually something special every season.

The Testimony of Mushroom

As someone has mentioned in the comments before, I think comparing the soul to the human conscience is the best way to view the whole soul thing. They definitely have feelings and attachments, but the lack of a soul or conscience means that despite the fact they feel those things, their feelings could never be considered 'real' to someone who does have a soul, because without a conscience, you can do truly terrible things to someone you 'love'. They might be able to love, but are not capable of loving unselfishly. Which one could argue isn't real love.

Greta mudie

I think you will have to come up with your own take on "can vampires feel in the Buffyverse?". It might be a little analogous to Witchers in the Andrzej Sapkowski's stories or Vulcans in Star Trek. They have reputations for "not having emotions" but as we explore these stories it seems the truth might be a little more complicated than that. Witchers have emotions but respond to them differently, Vulcans have emotions but their traditions and rituals enable very muted responses to their emotions. We are told vampires have no soul and cannot love or care or be swayed by ethics or morality but then we are shown vampire characters who do all these things so maybe it is a little more complicated. Maybe vampires are capable of moral actions but they are usually not human moral actions, except sometimes the echo's of their former humanity can influence them.

The Testimony of Mushroom

i’ll mix it up and pull from both youtube and patreon!!💜

Cassie

In regards to vampires and emotions, think about The Master's reaction to Darla's death. He lashed out, angry and hurt, and mournfully said, "She was my favorite". Think of your soul as your human conscience...

Ash Lee Can

Hey Cass, when you say responding to comments, you're talking about YouTube comments only, correct ? Just to know where I should preferably post if I hope to get my comment picked one day 😝

angelcakes

Haha x_Rhi_x, you want to talk unpopular rankings? I love season 2 and wouldn’t for a single second try to suggest it is any less great than someone who ranks it first… and I have it ranked fifth.

tc3

Season 2 is great. Its my 2nd fave after 5. Then my order gets a bit more unpopular...lol

x_Rhi_x

Not gonna lie...that song where your mum thinks the guy is smiling so much his face hurts...I also thought the same lol! Until you just said it was about drugs, in this video. Tbh I don't know any of the rest of the lyrics apart from "i cant feel my face when im with you. but I love it"

x_Rhi_x

Totally irrelevant but fun fact Robia LaMorte who plays Jenny Calender was one of Princes' backing dancers.

Kazza

Haha i kinda love how you bring up TV troupes, while i guess that many of the Troupes in shows while you grew up with, might have come from Buffy, not sure about this one speficly, but others for sure ^^

Leonard Ledung

Responding to comments is an interesting idea. As to vampires and feelings: It has occurred to me that (other than the "no soul" thing) vampires largely function in a similar physical fashion to humans... other than the metaphysics of vampirism. I suspect this would include the hormonal aspects like the biochemical response to being around someone of interest or likeable.

Michael Labs

Love responses to comments!

Bud Haven

One of my favorite episodes of the season and the series in total. For me it is the first great illustration of what the show is all abut. Here Buffy is having to make decisions about what is right or wrong when it's neither clear nor easy. Both with Ford and the information she learned about Angel. She now sees Angel in a new light. That he is her boyfriend but also was a monster. The scene where Buffy and Angel were talking was so beautifully shot.

Bud Haven

Jason Behr who played Ford was soon after starring in the show Roswell (also on The WB at that time) which eventually worked in an easter egg reference to his character potentially getting a guest spot on Buffy.

Zoë Johanson

I flip flop between this one and season 5 as my all time favorite of any show...3 is close behind.

aeronitz

"The last three episodes have been bangers to be honest." Not to risk coloring your perception, but for 25 years now, this has been my favorite season of ANY TV show, any genre, any time, from any region, period, full stop, end of story. And this episode in particular is worth a revisit once you've finished it. :-)

Darryl Gillikin

There's an entire episode of Arrested Development where George Michael and his aunt AND Michael and his niece try to make each other jealous by singing duets with the song Afternoon Delight. It's freaking hilarious!

aeronitz

The interaction between Giles and Buffy at the end of Lie to Me is everything!

aeronitz

Someone much more eloquent than I can discuss the nuances of telling lies throughout this episode.. It is rife with the concept.

Ross43

When Buffy asks Ford about wanting to become a vampire, he answers "I will" kinda implying that he did not but felt that he didn't have a choice, maybe even that he knew full well what becoming a vampire means and was still willing to go through with it. Just really good sympathetic villain.

Absolute0

You're seeing why season 2 is so much better than season 1 and we are still at the beginning. The writers have direction and know where they want to take us now.

Stephen Knueppel

Spike is one of my favorite characters. A soulless demon, but he obviously cares about Dru and even though he really wanted to kill Ford after only 2 minutes of knowing him, he was looking to Dru for permission because he was sensitive to her wants. This show is getting a lot more complex now and this is the episode where I feel the series really begins to take off.

Darrell Palmer

We’re here for you. Anyone who wants you to be someone different is just here for themselves. So, just be you.

Darrell Palmer

Loved your reaction Cass. This one was written and directed by Joss Whedon, so when you see that in the opening credits, you know you're in for something special. I still think Drusilla saying "what will your mommy sing when they find your body" is one of the creepiest lines lines in the entire show.

Miah

P.S. Keep doing your best! We understand you're a first-time viewer. <3

Paul Komoroski

Don't take commenters seriously. Too many people are just looking for something to complain about or be upset about. If you get upset about something you get to feel morally superior, right? I also don't understand people that watch reactions looking for people to have "the right" reaction. Ugh, people. I don't see a lot of outright spoilers in the comments but people like to do this thing where they hint at character development or upcoming themes and directions because it makes them feel smart or special. At the worst the hints make it easy to predict things and at the best they give expectations or insights to things that will affect reactions. Might be better just to avoid reading comments altogether but I know that's not realistic. Anyways, that's my rant for today. Please just do you. That's why we are here because we've liked the way you do things.

Jonathan Hall

Absolutely address comments in future videos if you want to!

Paul Komoroski

Please don't let picky people get to you. If people have some kind of important complaint, of course, deal with it how you see fit. But the rest should just be your discretion. Most of us understand that you have limits on your yt edits. But hey, that's why I like subbing to the full length. This fandom is still really large and it definitely can be intimidating. I'm sorry you're feeling that pressure. There are plot points or references, etc., that I didn't pick up until I'd seen an episode many times over, so don't feel bad about that, either. It's a dense show, and you dive deeper than most reactors. Please know that you're doing a great job with the show and you have a lot of support.

indaeo

Being turned into a vampire and losing one's soul is a kinda synonymous in this universe with not having any kind of guilt or conscience, allowing them to do the horrible things they do while not feeling bad orvm even reveling in it in different ways. But I don't think it precludes them from otherwise having access to the full range of human emotions. They're fully functioning "people" each unique but otherwise sociopathic for not having those qualities. (Except of course for those endless hordes of mindless vampires we seem to slay in the cemetery each week lol TV logic, amirite) Like we saw with Jesse, what remains is a twisted demon version of the person who died. Angelus, it seems, was particularly nasty back in the day , yikes 😬 This is probably one of my favourite season 2 episodes, just incredibly well written and poignant. I'm glad that it looks like you enjoyed it also. Fuckin' hyped for The Dark Age👍

Absolute0

Love the idea of you responding to comments. Just make sure they are screened for spoilers first. I am sure you already have something set up for that.
