Dinner & A Movie #6: Jaws

Dinner & A Movie #6: Jaws

Comments

I remember watching this movie when I was young and at a party, everyone thought it would be fun to watch it in the pool with pink lights and it literally terrified me. I can't watch this movie in the pool.

Highly recommend Lake Placid for similar vibes and maximum sass

James Allen

I remember being 7 years old, watching this on tv in the dark basement at my cousins' house. We made sure not to let our feet hang over the edge of the couch, because the shark would surely get us.

I watched this a lot as a kid. I feel like I saw it as young as 5 or 6; I don't remember the first time. I do remember being out walking on the beach at night- it was Myrtle Beach, which means I would have been between 11-14. I remember being freaked out by the idea of going into the water at night. If someone had offered me $100 to go out there, I don't think I would have done it... and I was a ballsy kid. But for some reason that really freaked me out. Many years later I remembered that and I thought it was probably because of the opening scene from this movie and some childhood trauma I buried deep inside. I don't know... Very good movie though. It's generally considered the first summer blockbuster.

This movie had a lot of company in the killer animal genre... the ones that come to mind are "Orca", "Tentacles", "Pirahna", and "Alligator" among others.

My interpretation is that Quint destroyed the radio because he didn't want to be rescued/towed back to shore by the coastguard, or for anyone else to get in on his kill/bounty.

Dan

That being said.. it would be kinda cool if they did.

1:33:50 Wait, did you Michael Scott your foot?

Dan

This is a great movie but it has drawn some criticism for the way it portrays sharks. Scientists assert that, contrary to what the film shows, sharks almost never play the cello while hunting.

Dan

Quint's story about the USS Indianapolis is actually a real event that happened in WW2. Because it had just delivered an atomic bomb it was under radio silence so when the Japanese submarine sank it there was no immediate report or rescue attempt.

I saw this film 3 times that summer it came out. I even borrowed my dad's car to take a bunch of friends to watch this at a drive-in. I am looking forward to watching this with you tonight with my dinner.

I was 16 the summer Jaws was released. My mother had taken as to Orange county California for the Summer where she had a temporary assignment. I took my 12 year old sister to see Jaws against mom's wishes and it scared the crap out of us. Then a few days later when we got the courage to go to the beach again the lifeguards suddenly started clearing the water and we could see emergency vehicles at the far end. They closed the beach without saying why but on the news that night it was reported that a 14 foot Great White Shark had attacked a diver in the water off that beach and swallowed him up to his waist before spitting him out again. It took over 400 stitches to close the wounds on his legs. I was quite traumatized for a while by that coincidence.

Perfect timing, once more. I finished the latest Buffy ep’s last night, so I thankfully having something to tide me over until then. Also, I actually haven’t seen Jaws before, so I’m excited! Thanks Cass πŸ˜„
