I'm a year late, but I'm catching up now and I'm screaming that you didn't get the alligator stuff in Blue Jeans. But to be fair you did say you're a lyrics girlie and not big on visual references and stuff.

I saw her in concert last year. She still is and will always be amazing to me.

If you are more into the lyrics than the music, I would like to suggest you to check out Sabaton, if you're not already familiar with them. Their songs tell great stories in history, they have their own YouTube channel where you can find all their albums, videos, and other interesting stuff, plus they are really cool people and I have never heard of anyone having a problem reacting or commenting on their songs.

Hope you have a great vacation Cass

I’m a huge Lana Del Rey fan so I could probably answer some of your questions, but I’ll leave all that to the actual Lana scholars, I’m just someone who loves her music and knows a few things from being a longtime fan. The only thing I wanted to touch on was with regard to the National Anthem video and the Marilyn/Jackie of it all. I never gave it much thought before, but maybe, and I could be completely off, Lana is saying/showing that it’s possible to be both. She can be Marilyn and she can be Jackie. So in that way she wouldn’t be playing two different characters as much as using the iconography of two different people to show different sides of herself. Also, while I do think you’ve watched every official video from Born To Die I’m pretty sure her original “MySpace Montage”TM video for Blue Jeans is available on her YouTube channel, if you’re interested in checking that out. It does include familiar images of the American flag as well as a blossoming flower. Enjoy your vacation!

I love the lighting in the Born to Die video with the lights flashing by the windows like a car passing streetlights in the night. And the guy isn’t thinking about the consequences of his actions, he’s just in the moment. Then his actions lead to her death but he walks away from the wreckage (which I think is a metaphor for the end of their relationship) perfectly fine. For Blue Jeans, I’ve always assumed the alligators are symbolizing the man. Like she’s saying he’s dangerous and she knows it, but she’s choosing to go in anyway. And I’m the end he drags her down with him.

I would be so interested in you reacting to Alanis Morissette. Her first album, Jagged Little Pill was very popular in the 90s and was amazing. All of her music is really thought provoking and intelligent. She is an amazing singer with a ton of emotion!
