I remember watching this the first time and being really bummed that Darla died, if only because she was an interesting foil for Angel. She also could provide a lot of backstory for him, since he's not very forthcoming.

Yes, that's the awful "remaster" for sure. Look how bright the light is on Angel's face in the kiss scene…it's practically daylight! And we know why THAT can't be. Here's what it's supposed to look like, in contrast: https://www.bing.com/images/blob?bcid=TkvSxquU85MFHw https://www.bing.com/images/blob?bcid=TrQDsys9rZMF3g Please consider switching sources. I can even send you the episodes, if you'd like. Thanks.

Attitudes have changed quite a bit since Buffy aired - the age gap of vampire-human romance didn't detract from the forbidden allure etc etc. As for Buffy's mom, I think she was making a gesture of trust in her daughter and then listening around the corner to make sure she heard the boy leave. (Watching along this time, I was a little disappointed that Darla's guns held infinite bullets. The combat would've been even more interesting with the tension of counting them, plus those vulnerable seconds of reloading.) Those are several interesting theories you've come up with there, though of course we couldn't possibly comment. :)

Thanks for doing audio and video. I'm just not into "watch-a-longs" as I'm too lazy to synch up, and I don't want to be flicking my eyes from my screen to your tab, constantly. So this is much better. (And I never even considered that you can't pause in recording the other way. It's Terra Incognita for me. Interesting.) That said, I do wonder why you're chopping off the top and bottom of the frame. I haven't seen anybody else do that and it's rather distracting wondering where people's heads are going and such. If this is a function of your source being that awful "HD Remaster", which often pushes in too far to get the 16x9 aspect, might I suggest you switch back to what you were using for the YouTube edits? I haven't noticed that issue there. (I'm also not certain that the "funhouse reflection" trim is necessary. You obviously did some research; I'm sure you can find a less-distracting way to avoid copyright issues.) As to the episode, excellent point about Angel wandering out where Buffy's mom can see him. After all, that kitchen has a back door, as we see later in the episode. I mean, I know it's (sort of) useful for the plot, but we shouldn't have to rely on plot-convenience as an explanation. And I don't think The Bronze has to worry that closing for fumigation will put them out of business. There's not a large amount of competition (to quote Cordelia, "We don't have a whole lot of town here") and presumably the other clubs have to deal with the same cockroach issues. I suppose that Giles is so all fired up to teach Buffy the quarterstaff because the Zookeeper used something similar on Giles last episode? Understandable, but clearly "fighting the last war", I'd say. Buffy's got that covered, time to move on.

I'd like to add something about your reaction, if I may, because I was fascinated, in a good way, by how convoluted, yet creative, your take on the whole Buffy/Angel thing was. However, for your benefit, let me offer you a simpler interpretation of what was said in this episode. (from Angel) He killed this girl and her people cursed him restoring his soul, because of this from that moment he stopped to being evil and lived tormented by horror and guilt for what he did, even if techincally it was the demon who did all the horrible things but he maintain all the memories of such actions and that's clearly enough. (from Giles) From that moment he shuns other vampires and lives alone. He stops acting like a vampire but at the same time he doesn't meddle in the business of other vampires. We saw some level of this behaviour in the first episode, he gives Buffy some information but doesn't actively help her in the fight. This however begins to change, in episode 4 we see him for the first time, as far as we know, facing another vampire (the claw guy). He's probably starting to understand that avoiding doing bad things is not enough, he has to start doing good things, and who knows, maybe being around Buffy it's what triggers this change. (from Darla) She clearly witnessed the confrontation between Buffy and Angel and the end result dashed her last hopes of seeing him return to the fold. “you threw the chance to come home, to rule with me in the Master's court, because of her (Buffy)”. Angel finally picked a side … and it's Buffy's. She also adds “You love someone who hates us.”, does she really believe it? Doesn't matter, at this point she's clearly lashing out. Anyway, while love is probably quite a strong word at the moment, the feelings are clearly there and growing in both of them. This however is one of those moments that make your video reactions so interesting. You hear “love” and your reaction is “love? After such a short time?”, while mine is “of course, how could he not be in love, she's Buffy!”. This is because I no longer see episode 7 Buffy but only Buffy after 7 seasons, an absolute icon, the ultimate queen. Watching your reactions makes me see these characters again like it's the first time, kinda, clearly your personal reactions will be different than mine … probably … I honestly don't remember how I reacted the very first time. To conclude a couple of answers/not answers to some questions you had during the episode. Restoring a vampire's soul is easily conceivable to be a really daunting task, just thinking about it from a narrative point of view. If it were easy we would see our heroes going around restoring souls left and right, it would be silly. Magic and magic users, the rules are … who knows. This is one of the “features” that you have to accept about the show, it's something that may or may not bother you, I can't tell, so I thought to give you an heads up. The “rules” about magic, and other stuff, are kept rather loose in the show, partly by choice to have more freedom on how to use it in the story, and partly because the main focus of the writers and creators of the show is always the characters and their personal story, not a structured and detailed world building. The general approach is: is establishing clear rules about a certain thing important to the main narrative arc of the characters? No? So just go for what works best in the specific situation. Generally speaking, a solid internal consistency it's not a real thing in the show. What it's still important to know about magic. Magic in the show it's never used as a sloppy deus ex machina to snatch the protagonists out of an impossible situation or as an easy fix for any inconvenient consequences due to the decisions of the characters. (Well … maybe never is too much, let's say 99.9% of the times).

As to the "revoking of the invitation" thing... I am not sure about the "Buffyverse" but I have noted such things in other stories. "Salem's Lot" may contain such an example. However it was a monumental effort emotionally and spiritually in that story.

About the thoughts concerning Angel "being drawn to Buffy" and the reincarnation ideas. I personally consider it more likely that Angel (being a tortured soul) acts out of vengeance toward other vampires and as such may be more likely to cross paths with any slayers. Secondly, such a tortured soul may have a "death wish" as well in some form and if he ends up getting "dusted"... well life has its little bonuses. Perhaps contact with Buffy may have started a change in aspects of the second idea.

Michael Labs

First a little technical comment. I'm of course happy you decided to integrate the video, it will make watching your content way more enjoyable. Either way you may want to try different types of compositions. I say this because, watching your previous videos, I got the impression that you have a tendency to move while watching the episodes. That's perfectly fine but, in such case, you could find more comfortable inverting the composition, the show in the corner and the the rest of the screen for you so that you are free to move comfortably without worrying to end up out of frame. Of course this is just a personal impression and I could be easily wrong, anyway keep in mind that the purpose of the video. Also pay particular attention to the audio balance. You should always be clearly audible over the audio of the show and never the other way around. Now, about the episode. Of course the centre of the story is the reveal of the character of Angel, but we also have the exploration of the romantic feelings of not only Buffy but also of Willow and Xander and how each of them handles them. We have Xander's jealousy and his blatant and clumsy attempts to push Buffy away from Angel, obviously failing as Buffy isn't easily influenced. Then we have Willow shy and insecure, unable to express her feelings to Xander, the opposite of Buffy who's confident, direct, and self-aware of her feelings. What I really like about the episode though is the connection and support Buffy and Willow show for each other. Each wants to see the other happy. Even when they find out Angel is a vampire, Willow accepts Buffy's feeling for him without questions, and when she watches the two kissing at the end, she's clearly happy for her friend. I can't explain it precisely but it's as if a natural complicity and connection is created between Buffy and Willow practically from the first moment they meet. In general it's a really good episode, sadly there is a scene that always deeply annoys me, the scene in Buffy's room when she kisses Angel. I'm not talking about the story but how the scene is been set up. If you stop to think about it for more than a couple of seconds nothing make sense. You have noticed it immediately at the first view, “Angel can't be a vampire because he was in the room in the morning”. Even if he managed to avoid the direct light how could he do it without looking damn suspicious? Really didn't Buffy try to get him out from the window in the morning when clearly there was no more danger? Not to mention she honestly expected to find him still in her room the next night after a day spent hide under the bed or in the closet. It's dumb, the entire set up of the scene is just dumb. The only reason I can imagine why they wrote the scene in such way is because they really wanted the little joke about Buffy's diary.

G.Un.

That’s not actually true They will be mentioned again in passing.

Why delete it? Her mom is moderating.

Ross43

Hope mod deletes this 🙏

Pssst this is one of those cases where it's not actually a spoiler until you claim it's one. Congratulations.

Tim Pierce

It's good that Tim did. Now her mom can make sure she doesn't read the spoiler comment which was clearly a spoiler.

Ross43

To answer your question, simply saying "you're no longer welcome" (or similar) doesn't undo an invitation to a vampire. Some additional context from the film: usually the Watchers train potential Slayers from a young age and before they actually become Slayers (are "called"), but in Buffy's case she was missed until she became the Slayer. This makes it difficult for Giles to spar with Buffy to teach her technique because she has super-human strength and speed so can beat Giles without technique (but she still needs to learn/practice technique for fighting vampires and other super-human monsters).

Dan

Yeah kinda, but you confirmed it with that comment.

Leonard Ledung

"the three" was kinda monster of the week, wouldn't read into them too much in S1, they will never be mentioned again xD that gets better with seasons, some times they will have some callbacks to older episodes.

Leonard Ledung

Hi I'm happy you are reacting to Buffy, the best show ever. There is only one set of the 3, once they die they are gone forever. There is nothing in common with the Vampire Diaries. No doppelgangers so don't worry about that . To clarify Angel's curse he fed off a gypsy girl, and her clan as an act of vengeance, cursed him buy returning his soul so he would suffer in the knowledge of all he has done while still having the physical desire to continue doing it. Anyway I've been a fan of the show since the beginning and have watched it several times. I currently support several people here and follow half a dozen more on YouTube. If you have questions I can answer without spoilers I I'm happy to do so. You should probably get some moderators for your comments to weed out spoilers though. Hope you love the show

Stephen Knueppel

Gonna call spoilers on this one

Tim Pierce

Hey you guessed the twist. Nice. I know people have been waiting for you to get to this particular episode. Your question about "the three", it's just those three vampires. Warrior vampires that failed and are now gone. I'll let the show answer some of your other questions. I like the new format, looking forward to more episodes.

Negative

I’m extremely eager to see your reaction to this episode in particular.
