Ask #75

Admittedly, I've never handled this rifle. I thought about buying last year, but ended up opting for something more traditional. So I'm sort of guessing on the one issue Red might have with the hand guard.

you can never have to many guns

SidenCorp

Okay, I stand corrected. :-) I dig the an-cap coloring On Red's Bikini bottom.

Antarctican

Those aren't Ukraine's colors. Those are an-cap colors.

NitroP

There's usually a standard "go to" set of guns (pistol/rifle) that is ready for situations one hopes never happens. Usually reliable ones that you have plenty of time on that you trust. The others are for fun and such.

Jay Naylor

Now I'm interested in what Red considers her "personal" weapons! My Dad had a total of twenty-five rifles and three pistols before he died... but his Grandfather's rifle was always *his* gun. The *special* His. I'm wondering if Red has something like that.

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

"Do I need another rifle" the answer is always yes!

Eddie Murphy

Ah. That I understand. I thought she was referring to a character for some reason :P

Vawlkus

IR lasers are mounted to the handguards. Red wasn't asked about AR-10s.

Jay Naylor

The sights are not mounted to the heat guard. It can’t affect the zero of a properly sighted in rifle. Also, get an AR-10 instead. The bigger round (.308 instead of .223/5.56mm is much more fun, and they break down and clean exactly the same.

Leo G.

I wanna get one for my wife at some point because they're light and I doubt we'll ever have NVG money lol

Blackhawk

Typically for IR Aiming devices. I think you can mount irons if you use an arisaka low pro pic rail

Blackhawk

Also there is barrel flex. As it get hots the barrel can flex as the round twists down the barrel. However with really good barrels that is a minor problem and only occurs under rapid sustained firing. The old M2 50 would glow red and droop after a long burst requiring a barrel change to continue using. That was old steel. The newer steel is much more resistant to that problem. I’ve seen the new M60E4 sustain 760 rounds continuous firing with no warping or jamming. The old M60 I carried in Nam needed cooling after 100 or so.

Vet

Steering Committee ($12) though right now it's pretty inundated on the "Ask" entry. There's a fine chance I might not get to whatever is asked so late.

Jay Naylor

Whats the point of hand guard holding any zero, if she has a red dot sight that is not even attached to it anyway, on a low rail thwt precludes use of iron sights?

Michał Jastrzębski

What tier do you have to be to ask a question

Mass

Kinda glad, that weapons are not potrayed as tools of the devil in that universe.. yay! 2nd amendment go :3

Acelicious

I have a Bushmaster ACR 5.56, a Polish Tantal AK74 wirestock, a Bulgarian AK74, both 5.45, a Remington 870 12ga 20in with rifle sights known as the Deer Slayer, a Moisen Nagant 1942 bolt action mint condition, a SIG P226 357sig, a S&W 360PD 5 shot 2 in 357Mag. Yeah I have a few.

Vet

It's a gun term. It means if you mount an aiming device on it (like an IR laser) it will be stable enough through regular use to not shift where it's aiming.

Jay Naylor

Cool. Wish I had mountains here. Just swamp, most of it protected.

Jay Naylor

I have mine set up for two-gun and your typical mountain recce. Nothing special really. Put a Trijicon Credo on it for shits and giggles, but depending on how I feel after a few rounds, I may go back to my typical set-up of a HHS-1 and magnifier.

Sphynx

"hold zero"? I'm missing a reference

Vawlkus

SWEET

Whiskey Foxtrot Tango Charlie 141

What do you do with it? You can send me private messages if you don't want to go into it here.

Jay Naylor

Fuck yeah. I fucking live mine, figured she or you might get a kick out of it as well.

Sphynx

Damn strait

Cute Uncle Gobu

She's talking specifically about the carbon fiber handguard of this particular gun she was asked about.

Jay Naylor

I've seen a lot of neat 45 degree side-set IRs lately, seems to be the trend right now. Those get mounted on the upper still using a rail-on-rail block so you can still have tactical optics on the straight-up rail. Some of them even have swing arms so you can put the IR inline with your other optics group. A good free-float hand guard (emphasis on good) can solve a lot of zeroing issues if you want to mount on the hand guard rail, though. I've had good luck with UTG PRO free-float hand guards, they're quite sturdy and they have a huge variety of lengths and configurations (colors, lock systems, lengths, styles, etc.)

Jurann MacRae

A man of culture I see.

Tyrdrum

IR devices are usually mounted on the hand rails.

Jay Naylor

I feel kinda stupid because I should have asked about the ak 50

Cute Uncle Gobu

Since the optics are mounted on the upper and not the hand guard, I'm not sure why there'd be any concern about the hand guard holding zero. It's only if you've got flip-ups mounted to the end of the hand guard that you'd be concerned, and honestly you've put such a drop in accuracy from using flips at that point that who cares about zeroing? Zero your main optics and use those, flip-ups are a Hail Mary when your optics get wrecked.

Jurann MacRae

Coincidence. They're an-cap colors.

Jay Naylor

Nice.

Jay Naylor

Admittedly I haven't tried any lasers on mine, but the handguard is rock solid and totally rigid. I shoot with a sling and I've never experienced any flex at all, so it probably holds zero fine.

Built mine. Retro M16. Has that 'Nam look. And before any one asks. 70 years old and was in the Army back in the day.

Lord Chaos

Is her underwear supposed to be the same colors as the Imperial Fist, or is that just a coincidence?

Vylon Delta

Oh, there are plenty of hand rails that hold zero. In fact, free floating is probably better for it.

Jay Naylor

She's tough, but a strong man would still have a weight advantage that's hard to overcome with skill alone. I may be resisting the movie tropes about that kind of thing.

Jay Naylor

I'm not a super huge fan of the free-floating barrel for that very reason. With that being said, its still really fun to shoot an ar

Loona Simp

Red is that tough chick who could kick any tough guy's ass easily and be superb at being self sufficient

Doomslayer69

I'd love to see her take on bullpups and the meme of all guns being modded to bullpups.

Thaddeus J

I'd love to see/hear Red expound on the pro's and con's of the 6.5mm PRC vs the 5.56 NATO

Warfighter21
