A very happy Chinese man in 1901

In many parts of the world, photographs were seen as an important document, and it was not normal to smile when having your picture taken. The Chinese didn't know photos were a serious matter and decided to be goofy.

I'd much rather my subjects were happy in photos I take. That's a nice broad smile. The eyes tell it is genuine.
