2025-12-07 00:11:59 +0000 UTCLike A Prayer is where she transitioned from a singles artist to an album artist. 1988 Madonna her relationship to Sean Penn fell apart and they divorcedbegan writing for what became the Like A Prayer album,filmed Bloodhounds Over Broadway, at the request of Prince flew to MPLS and Paisley Park to work on the Purple Rain sequel that became Graffiti Bridge that they couldn't agree on and she left maintaining their friendship, starred in David Mamet’s Speed The Plow on Broadway, received a letter from her mother on her 30th birthday that her father had, (her mother wrote a letter to each of her 6 children and the people she hoped they would have grown into at the age of 30 the age she died) and signed a promotional deal where she debut each single from the Like A Prayer album in a Pepsi commercial and sponsor her tour. Warner was breathing down her back and putting pressure on her to deliver a hit album and she wanted to show them True Blue wasn't a fluke. She chose to work with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray again for the album. She wanted to focus on her songwriting and put her lyrics and melodies front and center and this album was her first where she recorded live with a studio session band. Madonna wrote all the lyrics and melodies and was executive producer. Madonna and Patrick Leonard co-worte and co-produced 8 of the 11 tracks, Madonna and Stephen Bray did 2 of the 11 tracks and Madonna and Prince did one. In the liner notes the album was dedicated to her mother, Madonna Louise Fortin Ciccone who died Dec 1st 1963 at the age of 30 when Madonna was 5, whom she said taught her to pray. The album focuses on her family with Like A Prayer and Promise To Try about her mother, Oh Father about her coming to terms with how her father mourned her mother, Keep It Together about her growing up and leaving her family, Til Death Do Us Part about the end of marriage to Sean Penn, and Dear Jessie was written for Patrick Leonard’s daughter Jessie who was 5 when they were recording. Express Yourself and Cherish were odes to her musical influences Sly and the Family Stone, Joni Mitchell and the Carpenters. Love Song was one of two songs written by Madonna and Prince the other By Alien Means is still unreleased. Spanish Eyes is about her friends she lost to AIDS and Act of Contrition was just having fun. Prince provided the guitar intro on Like A Prayer which was reused and played backwards on Act of Contrition and bass on Keep It Together. Rose Stone from Sly and Family Stone provided backing vocals on Keep It Together, Donna DeLory and Niki Haris did backing vocals again Silvo “Tony" Ciccone married Madonna Louise “Donna" Fortin in 1955 and had 6 children by 1962, Anthony “Tony" born in 56 and died in 2023, Martin born in 57, Madonna called Nonnie born in 58, Paula born in 59, Christopher born in 60 who would become one of her dancers and creative director wrote a book about her in 2008 and died in 2024, and Melanie in 61 it was while Donna was pregnant with Melanie she was diagnosed with breast cancer which what killed her. Tony married Joan Gutverson who died in 2024 in 1967 and they had two children Jennifer born in 68 and Mario in 1960. Like A Prayer would go on to sell over 15 million copies produce one #1 3 top 5 hits, 4 top 10 hits and 5 top 20 hits. Like A Prayer debuted in a Pepsi commercial that had a family friendly video but it's video which debut a day later caused Pepsi to drop her. The album came with HIV/AIDS information card which was controversial but super important as many people weren't getting accurate and correct info or any information at all
