Hi Steven! I think Shakira actually just uses yodelling techniques to make her sound. I also follow a channel on YouTube, Beth Roars, and she explains more technical details analyzing Shakira. (https://youtu.be/r3tRi32T7MM). It's really amazing.
And I hope that you watch Shakira's MTV Unplugged, it's an older concert, released in 2000. It was her major breakthrough in the US market (all with songs in spanish). She also plays the harmonica and believe me, you need to see it! :D it's so awesome.
She always had a very prominent rock influence, andyou can see it more I guess in her early days. (It actually opens with the song Octavo Dia and ends with Ojos Asis).
