1993 was a big year for Holly Hunter. She was nominated for Best Actress in "The Piano" and Best Supporting Actress for this role in "The Firm". She won best Actress but lost Best Supporting actress to her 11 year old co-star Anna Paquin in "The Piano"

The Pelican Brief is my personal favourite Grisham movie; they made a ton of his stuff in the 90s

Samantha, you should read the book... the movie has a totally different ending to the book, so all praise actually should go to Robert Towne. But the book is also good, but totally different.

Not that I think you guys should feel bad or anything, since it's a very complicated movie and it's easy to forget, but I'd definitely put an asterisk on Busey's character being awesome given the first thing he tells Mitch upon meeting him is how he was in jail for statutory rape.
Great reaction, though. Made me reconsider the movie, which I didn't like as much the first time I watched it a couple of years ago. This time, I liked it more. Always good to give things more than one chance.

Yup! Scott Turow's 'Presumed Innocent' is a terrific book made into a wonderful film by Alan J Pakula. Alan J Pakula is, of course, the director of 'The Pelican Brief', another Grisham potboiler. Both 'The Firm' and 'The Pelican Brief' were released in the same year (1993). Grisham had quite a list of established directors adapting his works, including two from Joel Schumacher, one from James Foley, and another from Robert Altman. Gene Hackman appears in another Grisham book-to-film adaptation, 'The Runaway Jury'.

The first film (and most successful) based on a John Grisham novel. A former lawyer, he mostly writes legal thrillers. Many of his novels have been adapted, mainly in the 90's following the success of The Firm. I don't think this was the best film on the poll, but it is a fun one, with a great score from Dave Grusin (exclusively in piano) and with a wonderful cast.
So many notable faces in this. Holly Hunter was actually Oscar nominated for her portrayal of Tammy. For more Hunter you have to watch her breakout role (also Oscar nominated) in 1987's Broadcast News. Steven Hill as Voyles the DoJ man. He was the original star of the Mission: Impossible tv show and this was his last film. He continued doing TV starring on Law and Order until retiring in 2000. Hal Holbrook as Oliver is a favourite of mine. He was Lt. Briggs in Magnum Force and Father Malone in The Fog. Also a shout-out to Jerry Hardin as Royce. His role in this lead to him playing the wonderful character of Deep Throat on The X-Files and he's Jan from The Office's real life dad.
I had totally forgot how engaging Jeanne Tripplehorn was as Abby in this. Her breakout role was in Basic Instinct the previous year. She did a few big movies in the 90's but after that she's mostly done television. She was in that show The Terminal List that you reacted to a couple of years ago.
This was the first movie Cruise did that involved extensive running and some action. Aspiring actor and former gymnast Keith Campbell was selected to be his stunt double for the film. He did all the flips and such. He would work with Cruise 5 more times over the next 10 years (for Mission: Impossible 1-2, Vanilla Sky, Minority Report and his cameo in Austin Powers 3). Campbell even appears onscreen in the first Mission movie, He's Ethan's firefighter disguise during the Langley sequence. Cruise would not transition to doing 99% of his stunts until the fourth Mission Impossible movie.
For more John Grisham adaptation I heartily recommend The Rainmaker, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Matt Damon, Danny DeVito and Jon Voight among many. Another great legal thriller of the same era is Presumed Innocent from Alan J. Pakula (director of All the President's Men) starring Harrison Ford and with a scene stealing performance from Raul Julia.

Pretty damn decent detective story/caper--who knew Sydney Pollack could make a good movie? Not sure how I feel about Abby forgiving Mitch so easily and quickly in the end...but, hey, didn't ruin it for me either. Mitch getting his brother out, and fucking over the Firm and Ed Harris, though--awesome. Good shit.
