Vlog #933, Engine Restoration, Day 5

Comments

It does seem that you need a decent level of specialisation when it comes to machining the major engine components. From the channels and videos I watch (Jim's Automotive Machine Shop comes to mind), these folks focus on high precision machining across so many aspects of the engine. Given it's such a critical part of the car and the difference between getting it right and not getting it right can mean so much money, time and trouble, I'd definitely be putting it in the hands of a specialist. Good luck finding a good partner. Thanks for sharing the journey. I'm always amazed at the amount of work you get through each day while filming and commentating. Appreciate your work mate.

All the tolerances are mentioned in the manual. And as a machinist I'm very familiar with measuring that precise and how to use the different techniques.

Even though you do not have a firm grasp on the inner workings of an engine, you are by definition a Mechanic. Any experienced mechanic who understands how mechanical parts interact has to do is take something apart to then be able to understand it. And yes! Working on truly mechanical engines is such a joy! When you run into an issue there is a very limited set of things that can be causing the issue with a fully mechanical device. Much easier to troubleshoot and repair. The next big hurdle you will need to cross after mastering the mechanical function of the motor is the tolerances that go into the rebuild. But for that most all of us mechanics have to refer to some kind of literature. Unless you are a specialized mechanic with a certain expertise in a specific machine, no one has all the technical detail memorized. For me, it’s the electrical portion of my 240z project that I am most nervous about. I am not an electrician and that area of knowledge has never been very intuitive for me.
