APA, Block In Practice

Hello!

The first drawing exercise in my APA course has arrived!!! And it is a simple one...

This lesson emphasizes the importance of simplification for enhancing the memorization of the three-dimensional structure of the human head. By practicing this block-in template, you will learn break down the complexity of the head's structure and rehearse the mental rotation of the object.

This process improves your ability to recognize and remember the complex forms of the head and it's variations. Additionally, strategies for minimizing cognitive overload during the drawing process, such as breaking the drawing down into manageable components, are discussed.

You can generate your own skull references here.

You can also generate your own block in template references here.

You can also use the same references as I do in this lesson, they are attached at the bottom of the post.

Hi, is this site still active? Seems last comments are from 2023. Are there current students? Thanks

Dallas Milligan

Great approach which I can understand! I’m really pleased I bought into this

Julia Adams

The head is maybe 5 inches tall.

Can I ask you about how big your drawing is?

I am loving this exercise, I am beginning to understand how your lines are correct from mine and when I look at portraits I want to use this approach to see my portrait someday coming from this understanding.

Found this video very useful on how to approach the studies using your app. Particularly on using the zygomatic as a landmark early on.

The V SHAPE You demonstrate in the Down/Up Views has done so much for me. Thank you.

APA = Anatomy for Portrait Artists SBA = Stephen Bauman Artwork I have one lessons related to figure drawing here, but my Patreon is really dedicated to portraiture.

Greetings, new guy here. WOW, what a great pool of quality training. Question: What does APA and SBA stand for / mean? I am trying to navigate my way through re-learning drawing and trying to find my path through all this material. Another Question: The figure? Is treated here? Or on another level?

Henry Seiler

It’s relative. I like 1/3 life size for studies like these because doesn’t take up too much space on the paper or seem to ask for too much detail. It can be a bit bigger or smaller if you prefer without any real harm being done.

1330 apx. You say make the head bigger than your fist. But not too big. I have long used the size of my extended hand. Too big? This includes jaw and top of head. How big do you consider too big and why?

Excellent. Thank you. Do you have images for blocking these in?

Hello master, I'm new here on Patreon and would like to know where do I start? I already know how to construct a figure using the block-in, but I need to study structure and improve my shadows

João Pedro Gonzalez

Thank you for all the amazing and super usefull videos.

Joshua

I look forward to starting tonight.
